I can't be assed to make an account to vote and it doesn't matter anyway since it's obvious what the results will be. In my opinion though granting canon to something after the fact is completely retarded. If it's not written directly into the plot through some piece of media it's completely pointless. Do we know which exact characters are in Greg's list? Lariska seems like a no brainer and would be relatively easy to pull off, but characters with unique Kanohi (like Tuyet or Helryx) would likely require 3D printing or insane MOCmaking skills. I personally don't want another Norik scenario.

But I wouldn't mind some MOCs getting canonized. There are some things a certain portion of fans seems to agree on these days anyway. It usually happens when a MOC or an artpiece gets popular and the other fans run with it.

Google Makuta Kojol for example, and you'll see that most MOCs are gold and black despite lack of official word on his preferred colors (kek). Not sure who started it, but someone did and the others must've liked the idea to the point it reached fanon status- a literal meme, in the word's original Greek meaning.

But that's a bullshit piece of canon that was only done because they turned Toa Dume into Toa Norik and because they couldn't be bothered to make Likahn's Hau the Noble version. They literally botched a core piece of the lore explicitly because of some backpedalling, and imo it's shit and should stop. The point is, even if it's canon, I'd rather see G2 or printed masks be used to represent non-existing kanohi than see fifty mocs with Great Mahikis or Mirus representing them because fans with hardons for their favorite Toa will want their mask spammed everywhere and anywhere in the lore. It rwminds me of the retarded reason the Metrutoran have silver in their masks. It just had to be canonically explained that they painted silver onto their kanohi instead of just insinuating that they were more expertly crafted back in the day so the shined like silver or something like that. Reusing regular kanohi for others is dumb and should be frowned upon, canon or not.

For instance, in case someone builds an Artakha moc and is canonized he better had the G2 MoC instead of a shitty print mask.

Ravager technically isn't too bad but the Avokhii is really stupid. Could put Darkness in as well for the Kraakahn but his build is good enough to warrent a pass. Honestly the Rahi book was way better when it came to both descriptions and builds.

System came before G1 (it was present in some sets, even if I'm not a fan, Pohatu had system parts for example) but, CCBS came after G1 ended. You know why I'm pointing it out, the CCBS parts stick out like a sore thumb on this context. Stop playing dumb.

I agree. It was neat for some of them, like Ancient, Darkness, Tahtorak, etc. But look at some of the shitty backstories for the Dark Hunters and you’ll see why it’s a bad idea.

6 toa that, instead of having weapons and a blaster gimmick, have different vehicles for traversing the snow.
The 6 enemy sets are 6 different parts of a kaiju body that can be snapped together out of the boxes but can also act independently.
Titan set is a frostelus that doesn't suck.

The designs are by Ganto, although I can't find where he posted that particular image and it seems more recent than the stuff I've seen. I do like the idea of a smaller-scaled Bionicle with playsets honestly.

I honestly can't say if this is exactly how I'd want Bionicle to come back, but if it was I wouldn't mind. It feels more like a perfect fusion of Bionicle and System than a compromise (which using minifigs would be). It would be a great way to get kids into constraction figures using familiar elements and has the added benefit of allowing for better visual storytelling than the original sets.

I would make huts and trees and decor from crafting materials for my Tohunga because I didn't have enough bricks to make items in that scale, and I would make tools and knicknacks from Mnog2 alongside them out of system and technic. That shit is comfy and I wish Lego did more, especially with the playsets. Imo the 05 ones were superior to me because they had the Tower of Toa and Colosseum which at least tried at making buildings in the Bionicle universe. 06's sets were too bare bones and disjointed though. I remember hating my Piraka Stronghold because it was just too slapdash in comparison to the previous year. And stuff like Harry Potter can do just buildings no problem. If the sets were solid enoufh and kids were heavily invested in the story, village and landmark sets would sell, I feel.

The old books and comics worked because the major plot points were already given to him, he just had to fill in the blanks. "Real Bionicle" only consists of it's original run between 2001 and 2010 before it was cancelled. What is known by "G2 Bionicle" is nothing but Hero Factory with questionable real Bionicle influence. When people try to argue that sets like the Skull Creatures are not real Bionicle, while saying that the Masters and Protectors are, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake Bionicle as the Skull Creatures (plus the pretentiousness). Real Bionicle looks MECHANICAL, FUTURISTIC yet somewhat TRIBAL. Fake Bionicle is bland, lacking inspiration and a failed attempt to direct detail and playability into toys. Some examples of REAL BIONICLE are Tahu Mata, the Exo-Toa, Lord of Skull Spiders (the only real Bionicle set from the G2 theme) and the Bahrag. Phantoka is severely underrated. It's got some neat design elements like making Pohatu's claws double as rotors, the Makuta look truly evil and monstrous, and the masks are arguably some of the best since the Mata. The only thing that really drags it down is the introduction of the lameass Av-Matoran builds.

No? On the Mistika, silver was an outright primary colour with black/metru red/blue as a secondary. The only Inika who had silver as anything above a tertiary/accent was Kongu, and even there it's a secondary. And none of them use that god-awful blay.

They had launcher accessories, yes, and that year cursed us forever with launchers in every set. But the Zamor launchers were small and composed of multiple parts instead of a big dumb launcher cylinder. Larger point, literally half of the fucking 2008 Nuva have the launcher as their only weapon with an attachment piece as an excuse for an actual Toa tool.

The longer double-ended socket pieces were a fucked design from the get-go, but at least they'd crack after literal years (2007 lime-green not pertinent to this discussion). The redesigned '08-10 sockets cracked after the second time you attached them.
Now, granted, the Inika were lame borderline clone sets with unnecessary gimmicks that set the trend for every bit of mediocrity in the following four years, but they're nowhere on the same shit tier as the Phantoka/Mistika.

In that case, there’s one other set I absolutely have to recommend - Maxilos & Spinax from the same year. I won’t say he’s the all time greatest looking set (although he’s pretty up there), but he’s totally unique in G1 for his insane torso articulation. The shoulders and waist are all interconnected with 06 pistons such that you can actually move the shoulder joint itself to pretty extreme degrees. Same with the waist, it’s really the first and only time in G1 we ever got meaningful waist articulation (as opposed to 03 makuta’s...”gear function”). He’s less of a set and more of a walking experiment in total articulation, and there’s something about his poseability that you just can’t put down. If you’re looking to collect just a select few sets from the years you missed I would definitely put Maxilos high on your list.

Well how big is your moc? If it’s no bigger than the average inika build you can just stick a hordika neck or T axle connector + ball into a vaki hip and call it a day. When you get into titan sized and beyond, I notice most mocs even today still use good ol G1 pistons to reinforce the waist bend like Maxilos. Except that most people prefer to decouple those particular pistons from the shoulders so that your moc doesn’t do a funky jive everytime he bends back and forth.

2001 has still some concetpual traces of old Technic. In fact, the 2001 Rahi had some System compatibile tidbits here and there. The Tarakava even used actual bricks IIRC. Then the 2002 large sets went full modern Technic.

Not sure if anyone's pointed this out yet (or if anyone cares), but I've noticed that the Combat Staffs the playset Hordika minifigs use aren't random designs. They're actually based on the large counterparts' Toa tools. It's that, aside from Vakama's (it' clearly designed to mimic his Blazer Claws), they're all shuffled.

Mistake? Random? Not really, since all 2005 playsets are internally consistent with it (that is, the Hordika minifigs never swap their staffs with eachother). I imagine that, much like the 2007 playsets (which, among other things, include 2-3 minifigs that simply don't represent any canon character), the new parts and the sets were designed by someone outside the main Bionicle team who simply didn't bother to do some research.

At least those staff resemble their large counterparts. I still don't know what half of the 2006 minifig weapons are supposed to represent.

By your logic, why didn’t we just get a toa that looked like a crocodile or a three legged tahu? Because it wouldn’t be appealing, at least the design team seemed to think. Bionicle by that time already established the clearly humanoid profile of their hero characters and when the later years deviate farther and farther from it, not out of intentional design, but out of shear laziness (reusing leg limbs as arms, not using shorter socket limbs for upper arms) it is a fall from the bar that bionicle set for itself in previous years. The argument that “omg robot aliens dont have to look human” is moot, the clear intention is that they DO look like humans. Now you can call the inkia ugly, to a certain extent I agree, but it’s impossible to say that they are somehow MORE ugly than the sets that are both proportionally worse and piece wise more diminished. Not to mention worse in color (grey). Like I said, most of the 08 toa don’t even have chest armor. You can criticize the inika for having god awfully flat torso armor, but what does that make the 08 set that can’t even bother to have that much? So no, however ugly you want to say the inika are, the 08 toa are necessarily worse. I’m sorry, but that’s just how it is.

anon, the original toa all have random arm lengths that vary from tiny (kopaka and lewa's malnourished one arm or onua nuva's bohrok piece arms) to nonsensical (3 of the toa mata have mis-matched arms) to exactly as long as their legs (tahu, for example). Bionicle has never been 1:1 human proportions and it benefits from that variety.

I know it’s never been 1:1, it almost can’t be. My point is that they obviously tried to approximate something closer to it that would recognizable as such. My point is that with every passing year from 01 to 04 there is an obvious effort to get closer and closer. That’s the standard bionicle set for itself, that’s the expectation I’m allowed to have. I don’t care if some of them in a year’s line move farther away from it than others for variability, I am talking 08 where ALL six toa seem to be made deliberately ugly. Some years have stumpy necks and weird limbs; I’ve never seen it to this degree, except 05 where that was the POINT - they’re literally monsters. I’ve seen weidly empty torsos from the Mahri, but at least they had other things going for them.

Here's what's really evil about the Mistika sets. Gali and Tahu aren't just using plain Piraka torsoes, no, that would look too good. They're using plain Piraka torsoes BACKWARDS, so you get a nice good view of all the air pockets and blue pegs that are supposed to be hidden.

Another dark green Suletu and some retards would've thought he was Kongu. Plus I get the feeling that after the Inika they weren't that keen on using that head/mask connection anymore.
Maybe that's why they decided to give him a custom head instead and call it a day.

Was there ever a time that a character had a canon visual representation, then later on got a set that looked the same? Unless there's something special about the way store exclusives were done, I'm pretty sure Greg assigned identities to sets near the end of the design process. The priority was something like price points/piece count>motif>construction>set name>story relevance

As you said, specific story roles and characters were mostly the last part of the process and rarely ever had any impact on set design. I can only think of very minor examples where pre-established story influenced the sets.
The Ignika's canon look was finalized a year before the piece became available. Of course the in-story design and the physical piece were actually created in conjunction, Lego just waited a year before releasing it as part of a set.
The 2003 Pewku and Gukko models were based off their movie designs rather than vice versa, but they were released around the same time as the movie anyway, so it doesn't matter which came first. Pewku already had an earlier canon design but it looked completely different from the set.
Hahli and Takua existed as story-only characters before they got sets, but their pre-2003 forms were not released as toys.
Ahkmou also existed before he got a toy in 2004, but again, with a different body design. And I'm not fully convinced the brown Metrutoran was designed with the intention of being Ahkmou. It could be that the designers put the same mask on him by coincidence and the writers took advantage of that to slap an old character's name on the set.
Some of the Stars sets, but those are a special case, their design process was different from every other set.
Then there's the whole deal with the two Hagah sets. "Iruini" was clearly designed with visual elements from Nidhiki in mind, making it one of the very rare cases of the lore influencing toy design, but they made him into a different character, rendering the design similarities moot.
