The thing is that the Great Beings are the reason Spherus Magnans have mechanical augmentation. So I imagine the Great Beings themselves are technically Glatorian, but they haven't been modified, meaning they're entirely biological and wear robes instead of armor.

I gotta apologize. A few months ago we were arguing, as we always do, about dumb shit. Specifically why red and blue are bad colors together, and I argued that they were fine. Well I viewed a couple of mocs recently that had nothing but pure reds and pure blues, and it’s not fine. It’s really not fine. Holy shit. I repent of my brainlet opinion. Either one has to be a minimal accent or there has to be a third color to break up the eye cancer.

red and blue are fine together if they're more subdued. Consider: Optimus Prime. Alternatively, yes, a third color to break it up also enhances the color scheme.

Also post weird color schemes. I always liked tan and purple but it's tough to moc with those colors. Tan and red is also good.

Totally mixing red and blue tends to be weird, but there's plenty other ways to pair them up that work great. The main problem I see with that thing you posted is that it's blue "broken up" by red, which just ends up as a mess of constant sudden color shifts. If you keep them more neatly separated like with the Bahrag or to a lesser extent the Brakas right above your post, the difference actually becomes sort of appealing.

I mean, something like the Gameboy Brakas would look fine, and you gotta remember Takua is all blue and red. The scheme works best with red as the primary.

That I wouldn't even constitute as a red and blue color scheme though. It's literally just the barbs. That's like saying the gray gears or black socket connectors on the Toa Mata are part of their color schemes. I understand it's an accent but Takadox is like 90% different shades of blue.

In terms of existing pieces Kalmah's head without eye pieces and the silver mandibles is the closest you can get to his canon appearance. Rest of his body would probably be impossible to design

I dunno, there's something cute about his design. And say what you will about the McToran, but they had an iconic design. The 2008 matoran build is just... lazy. It's everything bad about the '06 onwards builds distilled into the most basic, simple form possible.

You know, it’s not really their fault but for some reason I just get too pissed off when I see their pre-bent prefab limbs. I know we had them in the earliest years, but it’s like accessing the secret knowledge of articulated elbows and knees made it impossible to go back. Imagine if we got a whole new set of short, bendable limb pieces that year. Not only on the matoran, but for the possibilities in moccing. Something other than the usual rahkshi and metru sized legs.

Why does basically every inventory mess up the Copper color? They list under the same color the reddish gold KK used (picrel) and the true copper of the Huna. I own parts in both colors, they're two completely different shades.

You're not the only one anon, I also checked Bricklink because I'm interested in building Artakha using the right armor color he has: sand-green, sans the mask of course.

And unfortunately, he is depicted as having an imposing presence. From which I interpret as having a bulky building. With this amount and maybe combining one or two of those minifig hand/arm piece I think I can pull it off; then again, it'll look more like mech than an actual biomechanical being.
If I'm crafty enough, which will take me a whole year being possitive, I would be able to build a torso as good-looking as this Krekka in poor resolution due to the builder being a faggot for not allowing people to download it.

Apparently, Greg simply said his armor was gray-green but said color was kind of confusing so someone asked him which one is, and the response was sand-green. Hence why I'm refusing to use other golden pieces aside for the mask, wish the MoC was made in other colors.

Whoever I'm not sure if this is true or not but; regardless of the color, I can use olive-green and gray as the internal structure.

Well, just because his armor is sand green, it doesn't mean he can't have a complimentary color to help back it up. Besides that, playing around the canon color with some reasonable exclusions (gray and sand green as a reference to "gray-green" and in order to increase available parts) is perfectly reasonable to me.

Also you should definitely not limit the gold to the mask. It always makes it feel out of place if the mask is the only piece in a different color.

Yes, I said that I'm thinking of using olive-green and gray too, not sure about using gold. Granted, the mask will not fit at all, which is why I'm planning to paint it. That or ask Greg about more details surrounding this character, I wouldn't mind Artakha's mask being gold due to it being the prize he got after his battle against Karzahni.

I think the word you're looking for is "charm". The McToran are McDonald's toys. More than half of them is made of a cheaper plastic, they're small and have shitty articulation, and were clearly designed for mass-production. But they have charm because they're cute and fun to play with. Most people here probably have memories of getting them in their happy meal. I personally love them for that very reason. I just think it's weird that people shit on Av-Matoran just because they're new thing and not old thing.

So I was digging into the lore stories, as well as Wiki stuff and three things came to mind:

Toa of Shadows Ahkmou would have been rad as hell to have in 2008. would have made a better vehicle pilot than a Literally Who Makuta.

the Bara Magna story deserved at least another year. I would have loved 2010 being about the new Elemental Lords searching Bara Magna for the limbs of the Prototype GSR and having to overcome various trials from the rulers of the Tribes. would have made for some rad sets.

Considering that it gets the stepchild treatment, being ignored and with the bare minimum of marketing, some think it was sabotaged.

Others think it might have been Disney because of the SW figures done in CCBS stayed in the shelves despite not selling at all while G2 got axed.

Another theory is that Lego expected G1 fans to hype up the return of Bionicle, but since G2 uses Hero Factory style CCBS, there was a lot of geewunners hating on G2.

It's weird for Me, because I skipped G1 as a kid and most of HF, but did get into Bionicle because of G2.

High prices for the Toa, no engaging story, shitty media with no sensible release schedule, storytelling being dumbed-down, the cartoon coming too late and being hidden on Netflix, online contests reaching mostly only fans. The sets also faced competition from other toys and there were reports that the sets were put on clearance right after release. The last 2016 wave wasn't even sold in Asia and the Pacific regions. A guy on Eurobricks said Lego store employees informed him that the sets sold badly in the US, and I remember something about the last wave being a TRU exclusive but I might be wrong on that. Anyway, only Europe and Russia cared even vaguely about Bonkle, but they weren't enough to keep it going.

2008-2011 Used a new design for the socket that was incredibly brutal because it was Mis-sized and thinner than normal.

Luckily, this only really affects the AV Matoran/Agori/STARS/1.0 Heroes and the Glatorian. The 2008 sets got lucky since you could just replace the faulty parts with older, more reliable parts

This is not entirely true, while you are correct of the 2007 lime they changed the plastic for stronger in 2008 while redesigning the sockets, (I haven't heard they were mis-sized but that could had played a part in it too, sure). this turned out not working cause they were much less bendy and thus broke, 2011 fixed this with sockets that were stronger designed, so while they had less breathing room they were able to take the pressure inflicted on them much better than the 2008-2010 sockets.

Fever, intense shivers, sore muscles and a terrible headache. I lost most of the taste in my mouth, which is fine because I experienced a huge loss of appetite. there was a LOT wrong with the 2008 socket joint. they tried to change how the socket so you can fit an axle or pin through the round hole of the socket better, but because of this, the edges of the socket were too thin.

and when people compared them to the sockets of 2007 and back, they found they were ever so slightly smaller too, which only compounded the already too-thin sockets and they'd end up breaking after 1-2 uses.

it also made anything using the joints to make a sickening squeaking noise as you posed the sets because the pieces were straining.

The higher ups at Lego didn't believe in it and gave it no resources, no backing, and no promotion. The media tie ins are a key element to Bionicle but they couldn't be bothered to even get a single book out until august 15, after every set for the year was already on shelves. 1 year for the first graphic novel. No show until summer 16, and then it was over anyway. The stuff the story team worked up was pretty weak anyway. The only people who put effort into it were the artists and set designers. Lego decided to bet on Nexo Knights instead, and that failed to last 3 years too so fuck em karma took care of it.

It almost seems like Lego's executives are ashamed of Bionicle or something. They didn't even want to include it in the movies.

It was definitely shafted, albeit for different reasons. The booth at NYCC and the general attitude going in clearly implied Lego was going to go at this with everything they had.
Then they rebooted Ninjago and saw even greater success because Ninjago was recent and easy to advertise. Bionicle was older and being a different system, needed more to be able to sell new people on it. It's not surprising why it felt like Lego dropped the ball with it shortly into the first year.

I've always enjoyed the weirder Matoran builds of 2006, and aside from the cursed Av Matoran legs, it's a fine small-sized MoC. not every MoC needs to be 1 and a half feet tall with a parts count of over 750.

Honestly tho, Bionicle, epsecially g1 wouldn't even fit to be owned by the family, it would had been some leftover from the kid's older cousin or something. I think they also just realized that they couldn't really make him justice in system form, whatever propotype they had was built from system elements, it wasn't even a minifig. Can't get my hands onto the pic of it but a prototype had mech with Takanuva's supposed legs just hanging from the cockpit (because for some reason Takanuva needs a mech??). Looked ugly.

the only way that bionicle could fit in with lego's current brand where all supplemental media is comedic and self-aware is by reducing it to a punchline

there's nothing funny about bionicle because there are no "human" characters and the vibe of the media is meant to be transportive, so the only potential for comedy would be to mock it for taking itself seriously:

That's definitely an overstatement. MNOG had comedic stuff like fire farts and Hafu's general Hafu-ness but is still considered one of the most "Bionicle" media in existence, and everything Greg wrote was full of one-liners that at the very least attempted to be funny.
It's only when you try to put comedy before everything else that it turns into a parody, but unfortunately that seems to be the default way of Lego marketing.

so basically i'm agreeing with you completely, although i do want to point out that templar's art director mentioned how in an online interview how he "always enjoyed the deadly serious tone of the story"; i always feel like the idea fans have that MNOG was good because it could be funny doesn't really do it justice

Perhaps I should have done that instead. My approach is to build a prototype without paying attention to the colours I use, then check for any missing colours. I usually don't have a colour scheme in mind so this isn't an issue I'm used to.

A good option could be Metru blue with a silver body. I was juggling between Metru-like arms and CCBS ones, the latter could give me that splash of blue, but the former could also work well enough.

The problem isn't red + blue per se, it's that mixing bright colors like that makes it look like a toy for special needs children. Using dark colors already looks better. And making one dark and the other light looks excellent, see how good dark red + trans medium blue looks here.

Also, that MOC lacks black accents that tone down the brightness, which is the problem that STARS Tahu had and that made him look so bad compared to OG Tahu Mata.

I recently acquired all the sets from 01-08.
01-04 sockets are sturdy today, although they are somewhat loose with age.
Starting with 05, the sockets start getting shitty. The colored mata hands that the rahaga use and especially the visorak long double sockets are prone to cracking at the top. This trend gets increasingly worse as time goes

I would definitely purchase the long double sockets in bulk in someone sold 3D printed replacements with thicker half pipe lips.

That's what I figured althought it depends of the filament and settings if you are printing outside shapeways.
But assuming a custom piece you would still the issue of printlines or the fuzzy texture of shapeways plastic if you cast a mold from a printed piece (which with a resin printer and/or a bit of sanding shouldn't be a problem), also resin would allow to make those translucent double socket pieces or even weirder shit like Socketballs does to his masks so there is also that.

Resin is great for masks and detail pieces because it best emulates the look of the piece you're copying, but Resin has virtually no give and cannot be used for sockets.

ABS, so long as it fits properly (unlike '08-'11 sockets), can be used almost interchangeably with CCBS parts so long as you don't deliberately attempt to break it.
