Is gunpla as modular as bioncle? I've been a fan of bioncle basicly since it started but have been getting kinda bored recently, and recently discovered gunpla via youtube reconmendations.

Yes and no. Different eras of kits have different standard practices with how the engineering of certain aspects were approached and different kits build differently. Despite that, anything can be overcome with some effort.
Checl out 30mm if you want some kits that were actually designed with modularity in mind. Kotobukiya's original lines (Frame Arms, etc) also place a focus on customization

Even if a line shares polycap sizes within itself, odds are the parts they have to be inserted into will prevent any kind of modularity without modifying said parts. Outside the lines, no chance.

Not at all. Doing any sort of real customizing requires a lot of cutting and cement.

Kotobukiya's frame arms and hexa gear kits are modular by design. Bandai's new 30 minute mission line is supposed to be modular too, though I don't think its as complex as the stuff Koto makes.

Absolutely. But I think the word you really mean, is "interchangeable". Gunpla is ridiculously modular, and these people telling you it is not have pathetic vocabularies. However, most gunpla is not very interchangeable.

It really depends on what you're wanting out of gunpla.

Some lines are very modular, like Gundam Build Fighters (GBF) or the High Grade Universal Century (HGUC) Advance of Zeta kits. Usually through swapping backpacks or weapons, but also heads and limbs. Take some time to look into the kits and you should figure out what parts you can swap around.

You can do anything you can imagine. Gunpla is polystyrene so you can easily glue on plastic sheet or parts from other kits.

Gunpla is not "Modular" either because modular assumes independent pieces that are assembled into a whole. Unless you consider each piece of the kit, or like each limb a module, you're really stretching the use of that word.

But thats a meaningless distinction here. Yes, you can do a lot with gunpla, but that doesn't make it modular. I mean, you can glue a bunch of pieces together to make something new but thats not its "intended" functionality. And if you're fine with just gluing stuff together than everything is modular. A box of goddamn cornflakes is modular.
