I have zero nostalgia for old Pirates shit and I can't fathom why people think the final product is worse than the original design. The original was just a lame reskin of the fishing shop in appearance.

They do hire actual designers to make the set. It's not like the original model is just ported to the factory and they start producing it, just look at the before/after of the new pirate set.

I loved a lot of the Lego Ideas projects but after Pirate Bay i realize that the project can easily be stripped of everything that made me want to vote for it - so I'm kind of just done with caring about Ideas Projects turning into actual sets.

The problem is that the Pirate Bay is in actuality just a remake of Black Seas Barracuda - so why not just release it as such rather than labeling it as 'Pirate Bay'? The design of the ship is amazing, despite not being able to have cannons - so sell it based on that, not latching onto an Ideas Project that has no similarities besides some of the figures.

The appeal of Pirates Bay was the Pirates Of The Caribbean style/tone and admittedly the similar style to the Fishing Shop. It should have been reworked slightly and sold as a more adult focused pirate set.

Then you have:
> A nostalgia filled remake of a previous set that could potentially jump start
> A modular more modern day approach to a Pirate Bay

The two would arguably go hand-in-hand and sell each other. Now the only people buying the Pirate Bay are doing so for the ship.

Why bother with the Bay concept at all?

Why not just have it be a separate thing? Why even label it as a 'Pirate Bay' when that is not the selling point.

Just have one set as 'Black Seas Barracuda' and the other set as 'Ideas Pirate Bay' and then you have two sets that would help sell each other and you appeal to Pirate fans on two fronts rather than just nostalgia for Boomers who are going to get KO'd by Coronavirus.

You can even have the Black Seas Barracuda team vs the Pirate Bay outpost - two very distinct teams of Pirates going against each other.

Just so much wasted potential if they had adapted the original concept and made the Black Seas Barracuda remake as its own thing.

i can see what your saying, and the original pirate bay idea is absolutely beautiful. but lego creators themselves say that the pirate theme is a loser and needed something to spark it up.
