>>8087832Mcfarlane never really sold to just comic book stores. There maybe an exclusive, but I don't really remember anything here either. It was almost always just his own website/club and a lot of times it was just a simple redeco or figurines.
Do expensive statues count? I wouldn't count them.
As for Saga and Invinicible toys... were they even by Mcfarlane? I've looked at their packages and looked online and never saw his branding on them. I wouldn't doubt he made them, but they're brandless. He probably just handled them like a middleman. Someone else designed them, engineered them, and McFarlane probably looked it over, maybe gave advice to change certain things, and then passed over to his chinese factories.
ANYWAY, given how big McFarlane is, making a few thousand Spawn figures is beneath him and/or his ability to get a loan to get it produced. Almost no bank will give out money for a "chancy" passion project without a huge interest fee to go along with it, hence going with Kickstarter.
McFarlane is a big dog in the toy market now, but they still need to take out loans to make their company go. Even Hasbro does this.
It's technically begging, because they don't have the means to do it otherwise. Kickstarter itself means you're not a co-owner, investor, or anything of the sort when you give your money. You're basically donating or gifting a company money. This is why any product that you MAY get is called a REWARD. This is technically not preorders. They don't need to give you shit, even if they produce everything as planned.
Speaking of which, will McFarlane sell these Spawn figures OUTSIDE of the kickstarter? I'd love to buy a double, if it actually ends up good, just to customize one.
