what is up with a lot of Japanese toys being made of clear plastic? i see it a lot.

Do they just love clear toys or is it just a cheap way to make more money on an already existing figure/model kit?

It's cool, makes for a neat reuse of molds, and can look pretty neat when the model has a nice inner frame, like the RG line or some of the MG stuff

Personally, they're great on MG's that have full inner frames, because you can't paint the frame and it'll show through. Really cool.

I don't really get clear HG's though, but usually they aren't too pricey, so they're inoffensive enough for not to care.

Bit of both, really. It’s a way to squeeze a few more sales out of an existing mold and it looks cool. In the case of Gunpla, they know that a substantial portion of the demographic is into making their own paintjobs and kitbashes, so releasing the parts in clear plastic provides more options for that crowd (you can paint an opaque part to make it a different color, but you can’t make an opaque part clear). Hell, there’s an entire spinoff line that’s literally just assorted existing kits reissued in different colors with additional runners of new parts that can be interchanged.

I've seen Gunpla (and MSIA), Beyblade, and Nerf (not Japanese) do clear versions. What other brands do clear variants? Transformers?

In mecha I'd say it comes from the tradition of art books illustrating the inner mechanics of the robots.

It's a way to replicate it in 3D.

Shit's not exclusive to Japanese toys but yeah.
It's pretty darn cheap and profitable to reuse existing molds and charging premium for special clear edition.

Don't like clear model kits if the entire thing is clear. Translucent plastic is still brittle regardless. However I'll give exceptions to the MG line that are clear such as >>8085751 because the frame which is where most articulations are are just regular plastic so its a win win if you want a clear kit that won't break.
