I think a big part is that the franchise never took itself too seriously. They always embraced the insanity of the setting and had fun with it, and included some great and varied designs. They include a lot of standard character archetypes, so there's a lot of appeal for sci-fi and fantasy fans. Not many franchises you can have a space cowboy blast his chest laser at a T-Rex while a magical barbarian rides a tiger around waving a sword.

MOTU set the stage for TMNT, the latter definitely couldn't have existed without it(especially since one of MOTU's creators was heavily involved with creating TMNT's toyline)

also it's actually 6 POA not 5 and while it's not the greatest amount of articulation it's certainly a hell of a lot more interesting than Kenner Star Wars design(which makes it a shame that all these retro action figure lines base themselves on the latter when doing MOTU style would make for much better toys both aesthetically and for play value)

Back then, most toylines literally were "same bodies" with new clothing and accessories. The G.I. Joe and Action Man dolls, Mego dolls, etc. This was at least different in that there were variations of parts that they partswapped into different body types. You had the a Beastman build, He-man and Skeletor builds (Skeletor had different arms and legs even though they shared a torso) and then mixed variations of the body parts for other characters in the first few waves of figures.

The 200x styles need to make a comeback. Re-releasing 40 year-old designs once every year makes no sense. Even the fossils who still care about that aesthetic must already have dozens of each character by now.

Coming late 2020 (Walmart exclusive), early 2021 (everywhere else). Wave 1 is in warehouses, and wave 2 is on the water (or so I've heard), so any production snags should come post-wave 2.

Origins should be coming out sometime this year at Walmarts, but those are in the same style and superarticulated. If you want the vintage toys for cheapish check out Super7's Vintage Filmation line. They're all cartoon styled and about $20 each which is steep but beats buying an original, and they do retain the spring-waist and have good accessories usually.

Their Classics styled figures have QC issues but all of my Vintage Filmation guys feel pretty nice. I've heard stories of early waves having shitty hip joints, though I don't know if that means fragile or just loose. My copies at least feel really sturdy, they're made of a meaty feeling ABS.

The battle armor he-man and Skeletor were way up there. But the play gimic of Webstor had me playing with it more than most figures of the time. I remember getting him at Target and we went to a drive in and watched one of the Friday the 13th movies.

Although Trapjaw is my favorite of the Matty figures, the closest I come to playing with toys nowadays. Also helped me win a 4chan pass.

few classic updates kept their gimmick (power punch, rotating multiface, flock), most only have homages to them or extra parts to emulate them (neck extenssions, molded in detail).

If you're not a die hard MOTU fan, but still want some representation, get the Mega Construx minifigs, so far only scareglow has his gimmick, but they're cheap and fun.

The Origins figures do depending on the figure. Man-E-Faces does have his revolving faces, and it looks like Battle Armor He Man won't have the spring loaded chest barrel but will come with plates with varying degrees of damage prints.

Scareglow also glows, of course.

That's all well and good, but my entire con fund is gone, spent on keeping a roof over my head, food in my gut, and meds to keep my cat from keeling over prematurely. I'll bet I'm not the only one, either. Fuck, Disneyland isn't even going to reopen until Jan. '21 at the earliest.
