The subway station at least had that awesome wagon monster function.

I don't know, I have all three of the large Ninjago structures and while they all feel very different, I wouldn't exactly say the Temple of Airjitzu is any worse than the modular city parts. Design-wise, I actually prefer the temple, though it is a minor disadvantage that the buildings aren't enclosed.

Greetings LG!

The Great Lego Space Quarantine contest of 2020 is underway.
The core concept is this: Design your own Space Theme. General guidelines are pretty loose, make something that could have served as a Space faction for LEGO in the late 80s and early 90s.
If you need inspiration and a sort of guide you can have a look at existing space themes from that period – Futuron, Blacktron, Ice Planet 2002, Exploriens, etc.
The rules:
1.Each participant may submit one build as an entry to the contest. A timestamp of your creation and the email I will then use to get in contact with you will be required if you end up winning. To submit just reply to this post with a picture that contains your build!
2.Modern parts and complex building techniques are allowed but the end result should look like something that could fit in with original sets and themes from that period. The idea is not to try to give the guys at Neo Classic Space a run for their money but instead attempt to do what the guys building the Space set prototypes from the 80s and 90s did.
3.Bonus points are awarded if the builds are stable and have play features (although these are not hard requirements they will help your build leap/zoom/swoosh ahead of the competition).
4.A submission consists of one build of any size. That means very small builds do qualify. I have decided to make this change at the request of a poster who asked for this last thread and presented solid arguments. There is no limit to how big you can go but this is not Shiptember. The emphasis should not be on number of parts but rather on the overall result.
5.Adding lore and backstory to your submission is strongly encouraged. Heck you can even make boxes and put the sets inside if you’re autistic enough. More effort is always better.
6.Digital builds are allowed but will start off with a severe disadvantage when judged.

Prizes: A prize pool of roughly 200USD will be split amongst 3 winners. Depending on how many people sign up there might be honorable mentions. Two of the winners will be chosen by me based on my own biased opinion. For fairness’ sake a third winner will be selected from the remaining submissions by a random draw.

What the fuck happened? The next logical step was to have the actual ghosts as the main baddie minifigures and give us some blues alongside some more reds and yellows, then give us some neat shit on the side. The only set that looks like it even transforms into a possessed version is the prison, and just barely. This wave fucking sucks. Is this really the final one? It reeks of final wave. It doesn't even try to have the villains fit aesthetically alongside the previous two years. This just looks like some fan made sets. The fact we didn't even get the main villain as a minifigure is extremely disappointing too.

It's more that human males and human females have different optimal strategies for reproductive success, and this carries over to the modern post-tribal society.

Honestly I've been coming to terms with not wanting to MOC, just build a set and leave it be, which feels like a waste to me. I want some of those Hidden Side sets when we get a look, and some of the Ninjago, but we'll see what happens.

One of the mods is a 'badass chick', although I doubt it's a cis-gendered one. As someone who's hosted giveaway contests in the /lg/ before, this feeling is totally normal. You will get ignored by almost everyone except for a couple of "thanks for doing this" posts up until the last few days before the contest is over, when everyone will start posting their builds. You're doing everything right (same info, same image). It's better to get it at the very beginning of the thread so everyone can see it, but as long as you keep using the same image and text you're good.

There's no such thing as spamming a thread with offers to give people free legos.

My pictures are normally 800x600 with a resolution of 180 pixels/inch. The billboards are 800x400, which translates to almost exactly 14 studs wide and about 7 studs high. I use a slide cutter to make sure the edges are straight, but even then you sort of have to eyeball it and trim to fit, so you might want to print a few copies in case you mess up cutting it out.

If you build a billboard like mine, the top and bottom pieces are 17 plates apart. They're listed as "plate, modified with door rail" on Bricklink:

Late 90s and early 00s minifigs before highlighted pupils actually had a lot of personality. It gave them a fair amount of individuality while staying more "toy" like.
The detail we get now, while much more impressive, is the same issue with videogames where everything is cluttered. In small doses that clutter is nice, but on a large set it all gets lost. This is part of why those older large sets looked nicer. Your mind wasn't deciphering four hundered minor pieces making up decor, and the detailed facial expression of the minifig. Everything popped more.
There are exceptions on both ends of the spectrum of course, and some seriously fucking rough early big sets.

Reread my post. Exo Force came and went before they became Chinophiles. By the time they did, thry already had Ninjago so they just turned Ninjago into Nu-Exo Force. No point in bringing the theme back if the other one is appealing to the same exact market. Monkie Kid has the bonus of being even more China pandering than even Ninjago with it's Chinese mythology influences, so the more reason for Lego to make it. Basically, you already have an Exo Force reboot, it just replaced the pilots with ninjas.

Who knows. If they push to have a cartoon series and slap advertising for it all over the place I think they could have a Dragonball/Avatar type thing on their hands. Just pluck random Chinese mythos baddies for each year and you have the perfect excuse to keep making this shit. Not that I'm pleased about it, mind you. Not only does Disney have Lego in their back pocket but now so does China. Say bye bye to any long lasting original themes not influenced by either party for a long long time.

When I first saw this guy a week or two ago, I kinda figured it was just a stand-in temporarily before they release it in the set with the classic glow in the dark sheet ghost overmold thing.

Ninjas were initially Chinese and besides, Ninjago does have a lot of Chinese aesthetics/influence and Chinese appeal. Lloyd's dragon, for an off the top of my head example. Point is, Ninjago got in there right before Lego started sucking Chinese dick, and they must like the theme quite a bit. There's no way China doesn't play a part in Ninjago's success. Monkie Kid is the final step in Lego sating "this is your theme" but obviously will still milk Ninjago alongside till it's dry. Other new themes that don't scratch that Chinese market itch on the other hand will continue to come and go every 2 or 3 years.

Anything that could support the same atmosphere as Elves would be dandy. I doubt Lego could pull that off with a space or mecha theme, and I think pirates are still viewed a topic for boys. They also covered the traditional children's fantasy territory of dragons, crystals, and elves with Elves already, so that doesn't leave many obvious options.

I think a theme about witches could be a lot of fun, if they went in a more Terry Pratchett direction with it. The protagonists are witches-in-training with magical cottages and familiars, romping around a fantasy world on various quests. A comfy adventure for all ages.

There's the Firestone Mech coming out this summer. However, we haven't quite gotten a good look at it outside of this admittedly small picture in >>8114804 . The pessimist in me says it's number 2. That aside, I wish the only Japanese inspired stuff wasn't Ninjago. Never been much of a fan of Ninjago. It just seems like a huge mess of different and often clashing ideas. Give me a good sengoku or edo period-inspired theme instead.

I pretty much bought the monastery to supply my own Japanese building. A project that I stopped working on due to frustration with the classic set I got to "help", then the wuflu happened before I settled on ordering parts.
Lot of the nicer Japanese sets were before I got back into Lego, but for Ninjago I've pretty much ignored the characters.
