Any of you motherfuckers yo-yo around here?
I've been pretty bored recently, staying inside all day and all, and was thinking of picking up a new hobby.
I have no clue if this is the right board for yoyos, but I'd call them a toy.

I'm thinking of pic related because it's the first thing I found when I was looking for a starter yoyo.

If you're looking for the best entry level stuff, my first choice would almost always be the V3 from magic yoyo because it's a great starter kit with a nice tool for swapping bearings, extra strings, an unresponsive bearing when you're ready for it, and a nice little bag. It feels great to play with as well with like no wobble and a comfy shape.

There's also the K1, which is a really nice entry level yoyo, it's extra cheap and feels ok

Other than those it's all really up to what you think feels comfortable, you might have to get more than one to find what you really like. I don't recommend Duncan's or anything like that.

What do you think about metal vs plastic for yoyos? I've heard plastic is better for beginners or should I just get a metal one like the V3 you recommended?

Something to keep in mind is that there's 5 different styles of play. You should watch some videos to see which one appeals to you most, and then buy a yoyo suitable for it. The most common style is 1a and uses the yoyo's posted so far.

Metals spin longer and are more stable than plastic ones. Plastic is better for beginners because you'll be accidentally slamming that shit into the ground/walls/furniture. Nothing wrong with starting with metal right off the bat though.

String tension naturally builds up during play, which is where the string gets twisted. People can perform tricks that reduce tension, but it would be reversed for lefties (tricks that build tension reverse it, and vice versa). It's something you have to keep in mind.

Metal vs plastic is mostly about design and weight, a lot of metal yoyos are more stable and spin longer due to better body design, plastic requires more material and weight to get metal style body designs which can be uncomfortable. And plastics are kind of a bit more durable when it comes to being dropped hard.

As said, K1 vs V3 is what you wanna look at, hell it'd probably be worth getting both of you have like 30 or so dollars to drop on a few throws, you'd have a lot of extra strings and equipment and you could have both a responsive and unresponsive at the ready any time.

Left handed yoyoing doesn't matter to much, might make watching trick videos a bit tougher but I think you can find a way to mirror videos to make it slightly easier. I guess left vs right handed would also affect string tension though it would probably be minor at most.

Not OP but I’m also pretty new to this too. Are there any brands or specific yo-yos that are complete trash and should be ignored completely? I’m concerned that I might get scammed by bootleggers or bad deals since I don’t know much about this hobby

There are only two things that being lefty will effect.

One is that every tutorial you watch will be backwards. They usually use "throw hand" and " non throw hand" ibstead of right and left. But visually it could be confusing

The other is string tension. Everytime a righty theows a yoyo their string gets one half turn tighter, until eventually the string bunches up.

In your case, every time you throw it, your string will get a half turn looser. Untill your yoyo falls off the string and runs away.

Anything you pick up in a non yoyo store is gonna be trash.

Go check out YoYoExpert to get a diverse view of cool throws and then look up reviews to see if they sound like a good fit.

Also. I know god forbid i say the "R" word here but r/throwers is a great place to see some cool tricks, ask some dipshit questions and whatnot.

As long as you aren't spending more than like 20 dollars on a yoyo you can't really get scammed to bad, for now stick with 30 and bellow and get a feel for shapes and such. After a few months when you feel comfortable then go up a price range to like 40-50 dollar yoyos.

Just stair step your way up and stick to places like magic yoyo and yoyo factory unless you want to play around with gimmicks and you know what you're in for, in fact there's a guy on YouTube known as Dylan Kowalski who does fantastic yoyo reviews and good trick videos. Generally if there's a yoyo you're worried about he has a video on it.

I started playing Terraria again recently and realized that a few of the yoyos in that game are based on OneDrop models, and those that are have the OneDrop logo in their item description.
Also they made two models of yoyo that were based on items from Terraria, the Kraken and the Terrarian

You'd be far far better off chucking ten bucks at the YYF B-grades for a cheap starter yoyo than putting any effort into fixing up a butterfly.

That said, Duncan is a respectable brand, just not their run of the mill walmart selection. Gotta go online to find their real offerings.

right now I got a Yoyo King Proteus and a Magicyoyo v3. I really like em both but I'm using the v3 as my main instead because its lighter and smaller build makes it much more forgiving when you screw up tricks and it returns like a fuckin canon ball.
Also, how will I know when it's time to replace the string? I'd hate to be practicing forward passes then it suddenly snaps and comes flying into my monitor or something

There are a few hints
Most notably when it snaps and your yoyo goes flying.

But some other clues are when the string seems frayed up and down its length.
If the string seems dirty, dingy or compacted
If theres alot of wear near the loop around the axel.
And in my personel observations: if the yoyo becomes responsive.

Get the terrarian, sick throw.

Plastics can throw as well as metals, look up any delrin throw. Avoid magicyoyo and most Chinese companies. C3 yoyo design, skyvvas, protostars, and shutters are awesome starters, all under $50.

Don't worry too much about the shape as you can start discerning the difference in play feel well after you're past learning your first combos. Get something you think looks cool.

Getting an extra set of strings is nice, but considering you don't really need to replace them all so often (I have plenty 5+ year old strings still chugging along), and the tension thing can be fixed depending on which direction you wind it up.

Yoyo factory is having a huge sale, click their a-may-zing tab and you can get $100+ metals for 20-$50. I would start there if I was you to make sure you get a quality throw.

Don't touch your bearing, meaning don't bother cleaning or lubing it. If your yoyo is responsive when it shouldn't be it's usually cuz of something else (commonly string tension)

Learn binds first. Gl and I'm open to questions

As a general guide, O shapes play floaty, V shapes play fast but unstable, H shapes are very stable, lots of spin, but a bit slower style since there's more momentum to em, and W shapes are a happy medium between V and H and you'll find more modern throws using this shape. again, every yoyo will play different based on the hub and weight distribution, bearing used, design, but this is overall what you can expect.

Also smaller diameter throws such as the 66% series are fantastic, more dense and easier to land tight combos, while larger yoyos will give you more spin.

I’d still argue the v3 is a good starting point. Even if it isn’t the highest quality yoyo out there it’s still a good deal, especially considering you get a bunch of useful accessories. This guy >>8145280 sums it up pretty well

I had a Duncan Dragonfly like 10 years ago, I paid like $20 for it. It was a V shape, very fast. I could make it sleep, around the world, and walk the dog. I was trying to get the basic cradle down, I think that's where you flip it over and have it sit on the string horizontally?.. I don't know what I'm talking about but I lost it randomly somewhere, it just disappeared and that was the end of my yoyo career.

There is no 1 yoyo good for all styles. There are decent, cheap options for each style, so it's pretty cheap if you want to try them all before choosing what to focus on.

I bought a 100 pack of Kitty 'fat' string when I got started and kind of regret it. It's good string, but I'd rather try a variety before settling in on a 100 pack. It kind of depends on your yoyo, some perform better with thin vs thick string.

A counterweight is a counterweight, it shouldn't really matter as long as it works.

For 2A (looping) youll generally need a pair of looping yoyos, and 4A (offstring) you defi itely need a soecialized one.
