Here's some tips from the previous threads:

For sculpting: use 2-part epoxy putty like Aves apoxie or fixit.

For tools: try a basic carving/sculpting set like the kind arts & crafts stores have. Dental tools have also been said to work well.

Also, using a Dremel is recommended. Minimites (the small $20-25 ones) are fine for starting out, but the battery life is poor. Upgrade to a corded one only if you want to get deeper into customizing. They are useful for stuff outside of the hobby though, so it's a good investment regardless.

For paints: use acrylics. Paint in multiple, thin coats. Brands like Vallejo/P3/Citadel are recommended, because of pigment quality.

Use a sealer when finished to protect your work. There are matte varieties and sealers that give a glossy look. As with painting, use multiple thin coats.

A flex shaft attachment on a Dremel is a godsend and relatively inexpensive.

Couple more tips for casting:

Smooth-On makes excellent products for resin casting and mold making. They also offer a beginner's kit with both molding rubber (OOMOO 30) and casting resin (Smooth-Cast 300) as well as some mold release spray included.

Check out youtube tutorials to get started with casting. There is a youtuber that goes by Crafsman Steadycraftin that has some advice on the subject. His channel also has other /toy/-related content you may be interested in.

If possible, it is highly recommended that you use a pressure pot for resin casting. Air bubbles are introduced into your resin during the mixing phase, and can end up causing hollow spaces inside your casted pieces. Pressure pots can minimize these air bubbles resulting in higher quality pieces.

I hab question, what would be the best way to sculpt antenna or thin horns without them probably snapping off with the slightest flick? Should I use a copper wire to hold it in place?

Pic related uses pla-plate or polystyrene sheets but I worry about the durability of it.

I've got a couple of Kamen Rider Figuarts with loose shoulder/butterfly (whatever you call the moveable shoulder socket part) joints. If the arms are extended out for a pose, the arm flops downward. Is there a way to fix this?

Heads up to a new product, CosClay. It's super flexible indestructible Super Sculpy. It needs to be oven baked however meaning you can't leave it on a figure bit you can peel it off and bake it, then glue it back on. Or make a whole new limb with wire in it and make it a bendy section.

I've got a question about adding a simple cut swivel. So I know you make the cut and drill a screw into one side to act as a mushroom peg, but how do you make the corresponding hole on the other piece? I don't really know how you'd drill out wider socket below a thin one, and all the tutorials I've found are really vague.

Dremel in the hole that would fit the size of the screw. Then use a small dremel tool to dig away around the bottom part of the hole, such that the top part remains the same size but there's more room below. Then when attaching the part heat it up such that the plastic is sufficiently malleable and get the screw head into that divot. When everything is back to regular temp it should be able to sit in there nicely. Some things to give a bit of extra care to is how deep the hole is, the divot, etc, so that there's no gapping and that the plastic holds.

I've only done it on one figure and it was surprisingly no effort at all. My customizing experience at the time was non existent, and it was practically the first time I used a dremel. I didn't think too much about the length, just did some rough estimates, and it worked out well. No gap, and a tight twist. I'm sure you know, but be mindful that it's better to cut away too little than to cut away too much.

My friend got me this Doom Slayer, it only costed him 20 bucks, it's aight for that price but it is dissapointing... i've seen people have replaced it's arms with ML: Absorbing man's arms iirc, was thinking of trying out that modification, but wanted to ask what's the best way to disassemble it's arms, everything else can be taken apart with some force, and was also planning on painting it's super shotgun

What's a good brush-on sealer for painting figures? I've been adding missing paint apps on some Power Rangers Lightning Collection figures (silver plates on gloves and white on neck in pic) and using Mod Podge after seeing it in some YouTube tutorials, but figure something more permanent would be better. What would be safe to layer over that and not fade the paint colors?

Liquitex archival varnish as long as it's thinned down. Best stuff is Mr Hobby Premium spray sealer however. You just have to find it.

I've been OP of around 30 of the past customs general threads, I still have all the old title cards saved that I've made myself. I don't have them all though, since this general has been a collaborative effort through the years. The oldest one I got is from 2012.

I want to make an emaciated version of this guy because my toy lore says that at one point he was crucified underground and left to die but since he is nearly immortal, he didn't die and instead his body just started eating itself like it would on a normal human body.
What would be a good base? I want this and the other normal one I'll make in the future to be 9 inches tall.

I'm considering Revoltech Carnage and 1000toys Synthetic Human but I haven't checked the size of the latter yet to be honest.

Don't know about clays but you can get Vallejo paints in their model section, it's a good brand that miniaturists use due to the pigment quality.

Model Master Acryl, Vallejo as mentioned but you'll need to really mix it well because it separates. The best paints tho are the Aztek Airbrush paints at Michael's Crafts. The 5 pack of black/white/green/blue/yellow is $35 and the bottles are 4x what you get in Model Master. Use their 20-40% off store coupon and you'll have amazing paint that lasts forever.

Not necessarily a toy but I finished my first casting today.
I sculpted it in monster clay and made a quick brush on mold, I think it turned out nice for my first go!
I'm thinking my next project is making some little robot friends with 3d printing.

Look up making an 'envelope mold' if you don't want to go 2-part. Still takes some work like gluing on the sticks that make pour-holes for the resin.

Shore A Hardness 27 means it's going to be rather soft, so you'd ideally need the support in place to ensure you don't damage the mould removing the stuff from it.

Working on more fodder to sell on Shapeways. These are figma-scaled hands that will use a 5mm socket for the wrist joint (ball-ends are 3mm in diameter), and will be a big pack of various hand gestures and poses. I'm planning to do pistol-grip, pole-grip, pointing with the thumb extended, 'propserous life' hand pose, 'paper' sign (already have a 'rock' and 'scissors'), remaining counting number signs, and the 'okay' sign. Any other hand signs you'd like your waifu figures to have? Oh, and these will be printed in the higher-resolution materials to limit how much sanding or prepping the hands will need to not look as sandpaper-ish.

Also, are these your final models? No offense, but they look a little...primitive. I would hope for better modeling, the fingers just look like tapered tubes.

Yeah, since these are rather small I needed to use such a shape for minimum thicknesses, plus these are basically for anime-style figures. so anatomically they lack finer details that would be difficult to print unless done in the extreme-detail stuff (which would be brittle as fuck). However the fingers' CAD models use sphere connection points at all knuckles and digits so that manipulating them in CAD is relatively easy. It's not impossible to do more anatomically correct hands, but again, it's a 3D print constraint really.

How does superglue work?
In the absence of a better alternative, I had to pour super glue on the sides of my Titans Return Hardhead's head/neck and it seems like it reached the face because the face of the titan master is kind of deformed.

I started working on a Winter Soldier with a Mezco Deadpool as the base last year, put it in a drawer for 8 months and got it out again yesterday when I picked up a soldier from the widow wave. He’s my first proper attempt as a custom that’s not just a part swap. Definitely could use a bit more paint and some work on the visible wrist joint, maybe more of a sculpted neck, I think, as I just used putty to put this one on.

Have you thought about getting a custom head to pain? I like the general idea of this, but I think there's ways to improve it 100%.

I have two ‘blank’ palms currently, and position the fingers and thumb accordingly to make the poses. One palm is flat while the other is in a flexed position for certain poses like peace signs and such. I’ll need to do a third for an open palm with spread fingers (“paper” sign).

It was a fabric marker, I tried to go gentle as I didn’t want to fuzz up the fabric, but he could definitely stand a few more passes. The boots and joints need painting, too. What do you recommend for thin fabric painting?

The arm was hacked onto the Mezco figure after I cracked it out of an older movie winter soldier legend, and I then tucked and glued the fabric beneath the arm to hold it, and I was pretty pleased with myself with the result.

Honestly, I think I would fuck up painting a custom head. I have some practise ones I’m working on right now, but the head from the latest soldier is a pretty perfect look for me, as I want to keep my cloth goods style avengers comic book-y instead of too MCU based.

Not fabric paint or market, you want dyes. If you can get the clothing off, which I assume you can. You want to dye that son of a bitch with either Idye if it's cotton, or RIT dye if it's some composite material. You'll need a throw away pan for dying, or at least one you don't care if it gets dirty that you never want to eat out of or use for food again because it's toxic.

The replaced arm looks pretty good, but have you thought about covering up the pin holes at all? I think Jin had some guides for it.

You might fuck up a custom head, sure, but it's how you get good at it, otherwise you could always just buy a pre painted one. I feel like there's gotta be a better head out there you could use with minimal modding.

The pinhole covering is a great idea, actually, it’s one of those things I guess my eye just skips over because it’s so common in toys. I’ll look that up, too!

So I'm just getting into customisation so I'm starting with a small project of just recoloring, I want to change the forearms of Siege Barricade black.
I've looked around a bit and I think Tamiya Acrylic Flat Black paint will do the job but I just want some pointers from people who are more experienced in this.

Anywho might as well strip that paint off and paint a fresh new floating on it. Either way it's ruined but can be improved if you good at painting.

I just want to back you up and say I had the same issue.
I was wiping some dust off my figures using a warm damp towel and it managed to do this some thing to her bottoms. Just plain old tap water managed to cause the paint to bleed. Something is definitely wrong with the paint itself.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.
I was cleaning my room then I remembered I got those figures long ago,so I decides to give it a try and open them.
I got this issue when I removed the plastic that is always on those figs then I noted the paint stains.

Dab some 70% rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab and gently clean off the excess in the stained recessed areas near the belt.

I do this with acrylic paints all the time. After this, consider sealing the toy with a matte coat to protect it from other chemical reactions again.

1) Take a large measuring cup of water and fill it to an exact measurement that can fully submerge the figure but not overflow from the displacement.
2) Place the figure in the measuring cup and submerge using a stick or something stiff yet thin to push the figure under water.
3) Find out what the new volume of water is and subtract the original value from the new value. Ex.- 960mL water after - 720mL water before = 160mL of resin needed.
4) Round up a little so that you have enough resin to fill the cavity as well as the pouring channels. Better to over fill a little than not fill enough of the mold.

You mean like this? You can use Testors flat black but will need some sort of semigloss sealant to make it match. Also the lighter purple parts need to be primered with something like Duplicolor or Bulldog adhesion promoter and they are made of a plastic that doesn't take paint very well. I used Testors Aztek Airbrush paints for Barricade because they're already semigloss and are pre-thinned. Turned out pretty good.

Did you try Acetone? That's what I use to remove paint streaks from plastic. If the flesh tone is plastic itself that can work to your advantage. Otherwise you're kinda stuck repainting it using an airbrush. The bare-bones setup of painting flesh to match would be:
Cheap airbrush from AliEzpress, hose, can of compressed air. Testors Aztek Airbrush paint (peach). Can of Mr Hobby Premium flat sealer (or similar dullcoat that doesn't make soft pvc plastic tacky) silly putty and painters tape to mask off anything that's not flesh.

Depends on if you're painting something that moves with joints or a statue. There's multiple different paints out there that provide a sandstone finish that if you don't like the color, just use as a physical base and paint over. You can also spray parts in 3M spray adhesive and roll them around in fine sand/Warhammer terrian grit then seal them. But man, joints are a pain to add 3d effects too. That's why not may people make a Sandman that has actual sand on him.

I remember in one of my fine scale model magazine a technique to get cast iron effect on metal would ve to skip a drwmel head over the plastic so it gets all scuffed and cut up then a coatinf of plastic cement to melt it down and smooth it out so it was a rough surface. If you dont have that i would think a very thin layer of epoxy putty and when its still very soft take a small brush and stipple it to give it a rough texture in the areas you want. Going with only a paint option though it would be muktiple layers of grey/brown dabbled on to give the effect of varietions material since its not naturally uniform. One main flat coat for a base then dry brush highlights/shadows

There's Green Stuff, Apoxie Sculpt, or Miliput. They're all 2 part epoxy puttys that are a little different, Ive never used green stuff but mili and apoxie can be smoothed and worked with water and sand/carve very easily but have good strength

Yeah, that's the one you want. He's usually pretty cheap, too. Robb Stark also has one of similar size and design. Mythic Legions also come with big swords, but they're quite expensive due to their popularity and I don't know how available the accessory packs are right now.

Yes, spray mold release is essentially aerosol petroleum jelly. I only ever use vaseline and it has never been a problem and better on the lungs and cheaper

I was a kickbacker for this in october and they sent me a bunch of them but now couldn't have much use for them yet. Did experiment with it and was kindof disappointed finding out if you don't do a figure that is an anorexic stick man, Its not gonna bend that well.

I think baking it a fee times weakens the possibility too.

I assume i need to make my main body with padding and a thicker wires then a thin skin of the clay.

Probably test it again if people are interested.

Articulation came out pretty okay. Torso could use more range though. I really wanted to give the waist articulation too, but it's too small to cram a joint in there to do anything meaningful.

It will depend on what kind of paints you used. Acrylic paints can be thinned with water and just a touch of 71% alcohol. Tamiya you kinda need their thinner or alcohol. Lacquers require lacquer thinner unless it's a Testors Metalizer then they need their own brand of thinner. Enamels take something but since I'm don't use them and don't recomend them I don't know.

I aim to thin the paint down so you need 2-3 coats to completely cover it. Multiple thin coats is the key to painting. If you're going to mix paints or eventually use an Airbrush you'll want some disposable plastic pipet droppers. Amazon has them 50 for a couple bucks or you get one inside the dollar store drug/pregnancy/ovulation tests and reuse it if you're just sucking upnwater. Pic is one of my first customs. I've been sculpting figures with monster clay since the beginning of the year, and all the work that goes into it is really engaging and stimulating. This is one of my better casts, still bubbly but not too bad. It's rough, but close to what I was aiming for. My hope is to be able to make something like this en masse and be able to sell them for some extra scratch because I lost my comfy tutoring job. Original design, meant to be a generic mook in a scifi adventure story.

That's awesome dude. If the figure is molded in the yellow beer bubbles, I would take a cotton swab and acetone out some of the washes to make the linework much cleaner, unless you do want the gritty look. Then actually I would put more wash into the figure to even things out.

It's slightly out of scale (3" instead of 2 2/3"), and just feels kinda stiff. I wanna refine the face a bit, give it a bit more eyesocket definition. Arms definitely need some tweaking. Also this was the very first time I used UV resin for eyes, so they didn't come out quite as nicely as I want. I gotta dye more pink velvet before I can make an improved one.

Just get some loose mattel john cena hats and get custom stickers/decals made.

Ask yourself if you finished the figure made from the parts and body as you have it, would you still want it in your collection? A lot of the times I'll end up scrapping a WIP because I left it for too long and a better base or version comes along.

Need some advice. I'm new to making custom figures. I always wanted to have the characters from Action League Now as a kid, so after some research I decided to make Stinky Diver and The Flesh.

Overall I'm happy with they turned out outside of one small issue with the Flesh. After spraying him down with matte his legs became sticky to the touch, so he's been for display purposes only. What can I do to fix this issue?

It's not "remaking" so much as "completion". I don't consider the project "finished", until the pattern/instruction file is done.

I generally don't remake finished projects because I would 100% fall into an infinite loop of revision.

Tossin up a photo of Mewtwo's dye tests for anyone not following the other thread. I want to give the pale grey a tiny hint of purple to pull the colors together.

Thanks anon. Yeah, I'd go the top coat route normally, but I'm talking about a resin cast figure that I want to polish then make a final production mold of which would preserve the polished surface and save me the hassle of sanding each copy of it I make in the future.

I wanted to make an adapter for my TR Mindwipe because its shield pegs into a really stupid place on its arms but I'm getting kind of fed up trying to cut polystyrene into shape, so instead I want to make the piece with papier mache, give it a layer of coating, and maybe cast it in resin in the future.

It can be durable if you use the right stuff. If you just use regular paper and watery elmers glue, it's gonna be fragile. But if you use stronger paper and a mix of water and woodglue you'll have a stronger result.

How would I even go about making Rocksteady and Bebop in roughly 8" size?

For the heads at least, I was thinking of painting the Out of the Shadows figures. Keep in mind, they don't need to be the OotS versions of the characters. I just want realistic versions to fight my NECA movie turtles.

Try this: put it in hot water to soften it up, bend it the other way, put it in some kind of small clamp like a binder clip to straighten it out, then put the gun with the clip still on it into the freezer for a while.

said, you need to get it REALLY soft, get it straight using a clamp of some sort, then freeze it (hour or so, to be safe).

Not that much. Theres a ton of cheap $20 airbrushes on AliExpress for nail art that can be subbed for an Iwata. You'll tell the difference when you try to clean it tho and when it starts to break down. I have three, an Iwata HPcs and two off brands so I have multiple colors loaded for a figure. They spray the same and the cheap one even has a stop at the back that allows me to always get the same thickness of line every spray by adjusting it. But man, there's metal flash inside, the pins holding the trigger get clogged, and the needle dulls quick.

For a recurring bend you're going to need VERY hot water. Then you need to stretch it long ways, not just bend it. Get it wiggly hot! Then lay a book on it as it cools.

Do they make a matte lacquer? Because Krylon matte acrylic spray makes the hands and capes sticky on my figures so my cans are still at the back of my shelf. It's great for transformers tho! I found out only spray lacquers (some) are truly safe on all plastics and whatever is in the Mr Hobby.

Yeah, I bought the little box that sharpens/polishes them. I think it's where they milled the nozzle hole that's roughing it up, but I can also bend the metal just by touching it with my finger, so it's definitely a cheaper alloy.

If you want a really scrawny figure, that's still articulated, you might have to find something more in the Figma/SHF area.

Actually, one figure I know of with basically that build is the Black Series Luke Skywalker, the farmboy one that comes with his landspeeder. You'd only need to replace the legs on it. Although it's a shorter figure, as he's a shorter dude...

I think the road you're going down is a perfect balance between both aesthetics. My only recommendation is that you use more "tacticool" looking lower arms and legs (maybe ultimate cap's gloves and some civil war cap thighs?). Otherwise the musculature throws off all the work you've put into the head and jacket.

I'd recommend a toybiz angel/archangel. Perhaps even a SOTA toys dhalsim, they're a bit stylised, but I think the stylization adds to the design of toho's frankenstein.

It's not as interesting as I made it sound. Toei didn't know the color of the armor until they decided it looked like shit or Toriyama stepped in and changed it. Some explained it was the color of light on the planet they were on.

Since I painted this as a "what if" for the colors staying the same I decided to paint the toe caps on the boots orange. Doing that now.

Go into Walmart and look in the paint section where the wall repair section is. There's a spray can taller than a can of whipped cream called "Wall texture" and has tips that produce different texture effects. The finest spackle spray makes the surface crackly and flattened. You'll need to paint over it after it dries just like you would if you put it on the wall. Use acrylic or latex because spraypaint will still eat through the styrofoam underneath.

Mock-up for a possible JP Amber Gastornis using the regular Amber Velociraptor.

Need to cut and extend the raptor's neck, plus make the beak from epoxy. Going for the Walking with Beasts version of Gastornis but with will try to give it a less intimidating set of eyes (might buy some 6mm doll eyes for a beadier stare). Extra epoxy for the thicker scales on the legs and to make blunt talons (and the entire middle toes).
