I started with marvel legends and marvel select figures, that lead to star wars black series, that led to figuarts which lead to dbz shf which lead to figma, Mafex, revoltech. Now here I am dabbling in all kinds of shit I shouldn't be buying, but I enjoy the hobby.

For me, it all began with saturday morning cartoons and getting up at the crack of dawn to watch robotech on weekdays. This was in the early to mid 1980s.
The characters and things I saw in these shows had toys associated with them, and I wanted them.
That's how it all started really, and here we are today.

Buy what you want. Don't try to "be a collector" unless you genuinely want most of a line for personal reasons.

My best advice is don't. Or at least be VERY selective and don't go crazy and keep it manageable. You'll end up with a hoard you don't care about which just takes up space and you'll regret how much money you spent. Huge toy collections look tacky to me anyway.

In the beginning I used to buy randomly from all kinds of lines whatever looked cool, although I regretted many of those early purchases it gave me a feel for the hobby and a taste of various lines which helped me focus on what works best for me. Lurking this board and learning about new releases and potential quality issues that should be avoided became a major influence on my purchase decisions as well. Don't to crazy with initial spendings, look around and do some research, eventually you'll find just the right stuff to collect.

Started by reliving my childhood at 21 and collecting spiderman related stuff got a couple of marvel legends but didn't really like the scale or paint apps and collected marvel select exclusively for a while. Got bored of the long wait between releases and the restricted releases per year and ordered a couple of 1/12 scale import figures. Got bored of marvel after endgame and feel burned out with it so now I just go for anything I think would look cool on my shelf and video game figures

The vast majority of collectors buy stuff that reminds them of things from their childhood, or from shows or comics they love now.

I'm a bit different. My first collection was the old-school McFarlane horror toys, because I was suffering from late-teen-early-adulthood existential angst and Predator, Alien and horror figures scratched that itch for me. Plus the NECA Hellraiser line.

Now though, I'm a proper adult (lol) and I collect figures that look awesome, scale well together and have good articulation. That's about all the criteria. I don't collect lines, but I've found that 1000Toys tend to routinely check all my boxes.

I switched over to asleep overnights for work and, needing something to do with my newly freed up days, I decided I'd try and make a webcomic using photography based on an old game I played with my toys growing up. I needed fodder figures for background folks and started buying again, just cheapo figures mostly, and here I am two years later. Buying imports, and expensive out of production shit based on nostalgic connections to my childhood collection.

I curbed my collection massively once I realised what appealed most, which to me is cloth goods and 1/12. Keep it small and high quality, only collect things you really want and love, not just things you are a fan of at the time.

Lego was a natural choice for me. I had a bunch of boxes of it from when I was a kid. Miraculously they didn't get sold or thrown out or given to my cousins, so with a solid start into Lego I decided to continue it.
It's fun. You can treat them like models and just assemble&display the official sets, or when you want to go wild you can build whatever you want.

I started with Marvel Legends shit, then Yugioh toys, then some power rangers and after a year I sold most of my stuff, right now and since quite some years i'm only collecting Pokemon figures

Sort of related, but preorders closed for this Edelgard figma back in December 2019. Solarisjapan still says they're taking preorders but I've never used this site. Is it legit or is the preorder offer jank? I don't really collect figures myself so I'm pretty clueless

I've used Solaris before and they're fast and they're legit but they have this weird identity confirmation process to make sure you're a real person for your first purchase with them.

If you're not sure about Solaris, NipponYasan still has her but you have to pay up front. NY is good for preorders but their aftermarket prices are retarded.

I would suggest being very very specific about what you want. Do you like comic books? Okay which series? Spider man? Okay what era/artist? 90s McFarlane? Okay, you can probably get Marvel Legends or a Mezco or something, ask which is the best and go with that one. Get a core set of things you absolutely adore, and then maybe expand. Maybe. Always remember a small curated collection is better than a horde.

Step back and think about WHY you want to start collecting.
Do you have a compelling urge to collect something and you just don't know what?
Do you want a nice display piece for your room?
Do you want to buy products of characters and properties you enjoy?
Do you want to relive your childhood of enjoying and playing with toys?
Once you figure out why you want to collect, it's a lot easier for someone to help you or give recommendations.
