Board games have rules and balance, creating very specific ways of interacting with the game correctly. The problem with this is that it's a real-time race against the clock that operates almost entirely on the honor system. Mario doesn't even have an interesting way of moving about the board, you literally just have to hover him over it. But what are the rules for movement? Do you have to make him touch each square? Can you just make him float as fast as you want? It's completely up to you, thus ruining any claims to being a "board game" because it's entirely free-form.
It would be absolutely better in every possible way if they just made cool Mario-themed sets with lots of interactive and moving parts that kids could just play with and have fun without all the retarded electronic bullshit that pretends to be game without actually being one.
