Anyway for me ToysRUs required an hour's drive so I only went there to spend Birthday money once a year, I remember one time I bought this really cool scooter and that Megabloks castle siege playset with all the knights and three dragons.

Seeing this as a kid always felt epic, like going to a wonderland of toys instead of just some toy store. They used to have huge interiors filled completely to the brim with product, unlike anything I've seen since. The board games on the back wall went all the way to the ceiling.

I live by the Toy R Us store they opened in NJ after they closed. It was different and looked more boutique inside but still jad the small kid friendly vibe so it was nice to see.

They were going out of business when I was little so I don't have too many memories going there except for a promotional VHS tape I'd watch religiously. The one location I remember became a Circuit City and has been vacant ever since.

The selection isn't that amazing with a lot of their stock being aimed at younger kids with the prices being average to a high from when I checked it out.

It's a more traditional toy store so they don't have a videogame selection for example like the bigger ones had but instead have a kids play area which is cool. You can still find popular brands though like lego and even was surprised to see they had bandai mini gundam models too. I should go back and check it out actually.

jealous, wish places like that were still around. A lot of the employees were very cool. I remember a guy working there at mine, going out of his way to let me know they were getting the next wave in, in a week, of the medabot stuff i had just got. i hadnt even asked or known, so got excited and came back the next week and got everything i could.

I think the same dude also tried to get me to save my money by not spending it on some garbage shit, seemed like he wanted me to get the most of my money which i appreciate even more in hindsight. it was some fidget spinner tier thing popular at the time.

My grandfather was once the manager of a toy store back in the 70's, my dad said him and his friends used to race bikes down the aisles once the store closed. Sounds rad as fuck.

I was a KB Toys kid because I played my pokemon tournaments then. The old kanto pokemon.

Shame the virus hit when it did, Toy R Us was just starting to reopen some of their stores and were about to open more.

There was one under the Lionel Kiddie City name that I only got to go to a couple of times, but the store was absolutely HUMONGOUS. It was like the size of a supermarket. The aisles felt almost overwhelmingly long for a kid to look through. They had a huge train section from the Lionel brand of course. They paved over the entrance of the store in that plaza, so no one ever took advantage of that vacant property, though the other side had an Old County Buffet I never went in, so maybe that expanded into where the store was from the other side.

Oh man, this place was great. I remember getting this guy during the winter and playing with him in the snow with a hideout (a snow mountain basically) that Batman had to climb to get to him. His face changed color under cold water. They had a ton of DC Superheroes and He-man, along with G.I. Joe. I think they also sold furniture there like bunkbeds and dressers.

I had Machado in the picture and the other one with the dark jersey, Bugs, Daffy, Sylvester, and the Orange alien from what i recall. I may have had Lola too but I don't remember for sure.

i dont miss TRU that much. all my TRU's were in inconvenient locations, but every time i drive past one i feel sad. I feel like TRU will have a chance again if they just stuck them inside malls and utilized pre-orders like Gamestop does

I remember when it was still new, i believe it opened in 2007 after a looooong delay. then it closed 3 years later. It wasnt the best toy store, but it was the last place in the city that sold Stikfas and FF7AC Cloud with bike. it also replaced the Disney store, but in a sense that it closed during the delayed opening.

We had an FAO Schwartz in Houston growing up and I swear to god no videos or photos of it exist online.

It was really well laid out compared to the other FAO Schwartzes I've seen photos/videos of, with a giant set of kaiju legs going through the ceiling for the bookmonster section and tons of animatronics through the store, including the iconic clock in the middle.

Toys R Us was a trip and probably at their peak in the early 2000's, at least around where I grew up. Huge statue displays, great layout with colored lines taking you to different sections, and a wonderland of choices from every brand available. I don't know if the selection got worse as I got older or if my interests just narrowed.

The Toys R Us sign always reminds me of the Crash Dummies and Kenner Batman TAS action figures that my parents used to get for me and my brother back in the good ol'days.
I always had the bad guys and I finally got them all except for the Penguin who was always missing for some reason...

funny enough, this is what killed them. Apparently they didn't have any kind of electronic inventory system, so they would just pile old inventory further up the shelf.

A lot of the mint toys from the 80s you see on ebay came from when these stores liquidated. There was 10 and 15 year old inventory at the top of those shelves.

That name reminds me of an old store in my mall called "Kid World". It was across from the KB Toys, and mostly carried wooden kids toys. They had every wooden train brand under the sun; Thomas, Brio, Melissa & Doug, you name it. Plus, it was the only store in town where you could get these beauties.
