Japan released the first color-screen Tamagotchi, the Tamagotchi Plus Color, in November 2008. There were numerous color versions released since, but none came to America until recently. The Tamagotchi On (called the Tamagotchi Meets in Japan) is the latest version. It connects to an app through smartphones using Bluetooth, so you can marry other people's Tamagotchis from around the world. Babies grow to be a mix of the parents' genetics. There's a new version of it coming out this week.
Bandai rereleased the original Tamagotchi in 2017 in Japan and in 2018 in the US. There were replicas of some of the original shell designs, but there were also a bunch of brand new ones. Additional new shells came out in early 2020, and new ones are coming in August too.
A miniature Tamagotchi called the Tamagotchi Nano came out in 2010 in Japan. Since 2017, it's been used as a template for tons of crossovers, such as Disney, Sanrio, Pac-Man, Pokemon, Demon Slayer, Evangelion, and now the Fate games.
