Considering that Lego's (and pretty much every toy company at this point) biggest competition is video games, I can only imagine we'll only be getting more video game based themes in the future.

I assume the minecraft sets are successful given how many years the theme has been running. And aren't they doing a second round of overwatch sets to tie in with overwatch 2?

The most likely ones to come in my opinion are Zelda, Sonic and maybe something like Donkey Kong or Splatoon. We have Microsoft on board since Minecraft, but outside of Halo I don't see any of their franchises getting sets, something like Fable and Banjo Kazooie can work, but they aren't popular enough

Age of Empires could work.
You get little builds of the different buildings with a couple of related Minifigs. Each set could come with some details or information about the building and it's history or what not, making it not just fun, but educational too!
Bonus points if every building/set has two different versions, Red or Blue.

I'm surprised no building toy has the Fortnite licence. It's a huge IP and a building toy is obvious given its role in the game, as well as the collectibility of the figures. I'm sure someone will get the license eventually, but whether it's Lego, Mega, K'nex, or Kreo remains to be seen. I'm sure Lego has some problems with the modern guns in the game, but they'll have to pull up their diapers and get over it because if we get Mega Construx Fortnite it's over for them.

I think Age of Empires had a failed Ideas set a while back. It could work the way you described it but it has the problem that most sets would be pretty big buildings. How would you make a line out of AoE?

Deep Rock Galactic. It's a co-op shooter about space dwarf miners fighting off hordes of alien spiders called Glyphids while trying to mine various resources.

The game's focus on mining could allow for tie-ins and references to Power Miners. In game environments are also nearly completely destructible, something that can be reflected easily in Lego sets and incorporated as play features. Killing alien insects falls within lego's "fantasy violence" exception rule. Even if the conflict between spider horde vs dwarf were removed the sets would still work well and wouldn't be that different from a game on lower difficulty where exploration is emphasized over killing bugs.

In addition there's large equipment like the drop pod that could serve as the big set in the $100+ price range. Smaller equipment like the portable minecart/MULE and Satellite uplink module could be in the $20 range. For sets in the $40-60 range equipment like the minehead and BET-C(a large four legged robot walker) could fill the gap. Lego would have a good choice of different environments to do location based sets on since DRG takes place in desert, ice, lava, radioactive, crystal, and jungle biomes. Minifigures would obviously be the four dwarf miners using the medium legs from Harry Potter.

If Lego ever stretches out to less prominent videogame IPs Deep Rock Galactic would be a very good fit. Plus the game developers are Danish.

Honestly a Super Smash Bros. theme would end up pretty good if they went all-in on the minifigs
>Builds could easily be from a variety of Nintendo stages (Peach's Castle, Jungle Japes, Pokemon Stadium, Halberd, Yoshi's Island, etc) and include 2-8 figs in each set with few to no repeats
>A variety of accessories to include as items (Home Run Bats, beam swords, pokeballs, crates, an assist trophy) or as stage hazards (For example whatever set comes with Captain Falcon could include a build for the Blue Falcon to use for his Final Smash)
>UCS Battlefield based on the Ultimate design
>Easily to incorporate a CMF series for characters that normalfags wouldn't recognize like Shulk or Dark Samus

The only problem would be having to skip out on third parties but I can live with that.

The problem is that some of the Nintendo franchises need more licencing with other companies (Pokemon, Kirby, FE and Xenoblade for example), so it wouldn't work if we don't get those characters

It was lego, they didn't want molded heads and Blizzard wanted. Though before Overwatch got released the Blizzard head said that they discussed again with lego about Warcraft and that they are more welcome to do it now.

They’ve been shelfwarming in my town ever since they came out. I got the Hanzo / Genji one on a whim since it was $10 (normally $27 CAD). It sucked. The figures printing is whack and the entire thing felt like a Chinese bootleg

I mean kinda. My Lego city is themed to a theme park so it's meant to be BTMRR in name and theme but there's no way to come close to the actual track layout with Lego's stupid limited coaster system

Rebuilding 20 year old sets from around the turn of the millennium, from a rather quite large box of mixed pieces.

Four complete sets so far, many other close to completion.

No, I'm not, but one of the sets I've finished is the small, red racing car from the Dino Island line. A lot of the rest is Adventurers (Egypt, Dino Island, Orient Expedition. Strangely, no Jungle).

I don't know about video game sets in general but it's extremely unlikely we're getting any more Nintendo IPs, at least in the near future. I predicted we'd get Lego Mario a couple months back when they added the ability to check if an IP is allowed on IDEAS and Mario was the only first-party Nintendo IP that wasn't allowed. Pokemon as well, but of course they're in that partnership with TPCI/Gamefreak

once she asked me to build a custom submarine for her to display next to it but i never got to do it and only just got reminded of it. My mother found this in-box tiny aquanauts sub too when cleaning out the house.

Of the 140 parts, 30 of them are 1x1 plates, tiles or studs. It's a very nice price to part ratio for a licensed set. The joke/point was that it is misleading due to the unusually high concentration of very small parts, especially in this side build.

It's Canadian Dollars so its more like $950 USD.

I would take the thriftpill but I've never seen lego at any thrift stores in my town, and I go frequently for vintage electronics.

I do. The second wave of Overwatch sets was pretty solid, but Wrecking Ball was definitely the better of the two. Still a nice set with some very neat pieces though. But overpriced imo (probably due to bigfig Roadhog)

I think buildable figures would be cool for the heroes. Minifigs are neat but don't really offer much in the way of building. For sets based on a game about characters that generally don't drive vehicles there's not much else to do.

Not, their other video game sets are doing fine, Minecraft is doing great and Mario is looking good so far.

OW failed because the merch came too late and Blizzard put everyone off the game with shit balancing and taking too slow to actually do something so people got fed up and quit, very little to do with the LEGO or other merch.

Yeah the new Haunted House definitely interests me as well. I don't buy much Lego so I might lean more in that direction, but we'll see how things go.
Really appreciating the recommendations though. When Lego does horror it's some of the best stuff they produce, and I've really been trying to pick up more things that evoke that.

my barracuda bay was missing one black ingot. Luckily I had a spare but man this fucks with my OCD. Looked through all the packaging and it wasn't there. I'm thinking it must just be missing.

I picked this up today, mostly for parts, but I was impressed that the gears on the front spin when it rolls forward, and the recycle graphics on the sides are printed, not stickers. Very cute build. If your modern Lego city needs a streetsweeper this is a nice little set.

Yeah, the classic street sweeper used two of the bristle pieces mounted sideways like a big roller in the front. I really like how this one is built to make the front cleaners spin. The brushes on the sides also spin when it rolls.

Thanks to the other anon for posting the heresy'd Hidden Side scientist; I had the same idea and it looks great.

Legs are both from Ninjago; the one on the left had a dark blue belt/ribbon thing and the one on the right is from the Warboy polybag

that's the first thing I would check. But by the time I got to the black ingot I had placed all the bricks. And none of them had trouble sticking to other pieces. I know what you mean about those 1 x 2 x 5 bricks. As far as I know though Barracuda Bay doesn't have any of those pieces.

I don't think you get it so I'll give a little bit of context. Lego is not artistry. I'm building a model of a real life machine and there are obviously the best ways to do some parts of it, and it's already been done before. I cannot reinvent the wheel, so to speak. He was hired to be the Lego guy based on his connections with powerful people and his tech background. Jang was wealthy before he began doing Lego reviews thanks to his career as an engineer, and purchased lots of sets with his own money, and had the money to set up a professional review studio with a rotating table, professional lights, cameras, etc. and has a pleasant speaking voice, and all these things put him ahead of the other Lego reviewers who shoot their reviews in poorly-lit, cramped rooms and who mumble, stutter, and have unappealing voices.

That's not how the entertainment industry works. To make it in the industry, you have to be connected to the right people. They don't let just anybody become famous. They have to be able to trust you, and that's why you need to know certain people. With fame comes power, and they're not going to allow people who aren't in line with their ideas and beliefs to gain power.

Youtube as a business isn't in the position of sitting back and hoping regular people make interesting content for them. Too much money involved to take that risk. They likely create their own content (with high production quality), based on research to determine what type of content will draw in viewers, and then they hire people who they can trust to perform the job at a high level, people like Jang who have connections to powerful people, who have a tech background, and who have a pleasant voice.

Over a hundred lego sets and the only time I found myself missing anything was a mid sized gray technic axle that went into the big vehicle drill of pic related. Built it on a big table with pieces autistically poured into little bowls. Looked for the piece for hours. Still half doubt myself today even though I’m sure I looked anywhere it could have possibly gone.

Yes. Because of the pandemic, Lego's North American factories have had a hard time keeping up with demand, so Lego has been shipping in sets that were intended for the Euro market. Because the US requires that the part count appear on the set, Lego has to print stickers and affix them to the sets so they comply with US law.

Sellers who had prototype/ unreleased parts got grandfathered in and were allowed to keep their inventory as-is, but Lego revised the way sellers can use the site inventory and removed all prototype/unreleased parts, so it's now no longer possible to add unreleased or prototype pieces to a store's inventory. In other words, once all the prototype/unreleased pieces are sold, no more will be added and they won't be listed anymore.

Rate my Moc, Its based off the Leviathan tank from Saints Row gat outta hell
Bit of history with this build, it used to be a GDI predator tank moc from command and conquer but it looked kinda grey and boring, the tank treads are similar enough to it
It also resembles the apocalypse and mammoth tank from CNC aswell

I think they may allow unconnected people a certain level of success on Youtube, but they will be watched closely to make certain they don't step out of line, and they'll never reach the top of the pyramid. Hey /toy/, tourist here. I enjoy collecting stuff but I haven't gotten into LEGO as an adult. Have a lot of really cool old sets from when I was a kid stored away, but that was around 25 years ago. I've always wanted to get back into LEGO so I jumped in and bought the 21319 Central Perk and 75276 Stormtrooper Helmet set. r8 my semi-moc sf1000. i based it heavily off of the sf16 set [75879] for consistency's sake, and to make sure the proportions lined up right with the real cars; at 6-wide scale it conveniently planned out to being 1 stud longer than the old set.

Don't worry so much about it. People here have a bunch of opinions about all sorts, a lot of it shitposting. Lego's a toy in the end, the entire point is to have fun with it.
The NES set, despite my initial misgivings, is pretty great looking so I can't blame you for going for that. Steamboat Willie is about to be retired so if you're interested, I'd say grab that one before it goes. Anything else just depends on you. Architecture sets are generally well-liked to my understanding.
If you're ever curious how a set might look in actuality, you can always check Youtube or elsewhere, always plenty of videos and photos to really showcase sets you might be into.

How do you know when a set is close to being retired? I've been browsing the LEGO website for a while and I came across a section with a lot of retired sets. Do they ever get "reprinted"? I don't know how LEGO handles all of that. I imagine once a set is retired the price always sky rockets.

Sets almost never get reprinted. Occasionally you'll get callbacks or something, but nothing generally gets remade exactly the same.
As for prices after retiring, all depends. Star Wars almost always do. Certain themes will jump in price as well, and special sets like most Ideas.
Generally sets will stick around for at least a year before they retire though. Lego does a few waves a year for their major themes, with bigger display type sets being announced and released at random intervals throughout the year.

The big lot I've been going through had a few interesting pieces, looking them up I realized I had this little plane in there.
Managed to build it back up. It isn't entirely 100% accurate since some parts were missing but I did try to substitute as little as possible while adding a few improvements. I think it looks cute.

That looks really nice. I had the Shell Model Team 2556 set when I was a kid, so this brings me back. I remember going to pick it up with my dad. We had gone to the station and he'd told me I could get whatever set I wanted, but knowing we were short on cash I just eyeballed the car then picked up something small instead. Halfway back to the car my dad said "screw it, we're going back" and got me that set. Was a great evening.

I'll be heading to my local lego store tomorrow but don't want to spend a ton and am hoping you guys can help narrow down my want list on what I should get since they're mostly all hard to find sets so might not get a second chance at them at retail prices. Biggest want is the new Haunted House with the others being the Creator Bookstore and Assembly Square which are soldout but hoping will get restocked since I was told they would get new stock in on the day I go.
