'87 had more than its fair share of awesome figures. Whether or not it's the best year is arguable, but with figures like Outback, Jinx, Falcon, Gung-ho . . . a good case can be made for it.

More importantly, '87 and '85 are both better than '91. That much is obvious.

Hasbro will keep going back and forth between the two now and then to goose flagging sales. The next dip into 1/18th will be far from the first time they downsized.

But it's important to always have some 1/12th on the shelves. Otherwise the ham-hands will have nothing they can safely play with.

I'm actually not a huge fan of old Joes as a whole, I think they look real short and stumpy and their heads are oversized. But one thing I gotta say is that the helmeted headsculpts were INCREDIBLE. They captured this certain cool look and feel that the modern updates never achieve. Like Big Boa here, the modern sculpt just ain't the same, it doesn't feel as weird and robotic. Toxo-Viper, Ice Cream Soldier, Techno Viper...so many awesome headsculpts got updates that just looked worse.

I can't even really put into proper words why the old heads look so cool to me. The new ones just don't do shit for me.

My favorite masked head when I was a kid was Charbroil. I loved the shit out of that helmet. When it came time to update him, for some reason they didn't give him a crappy update, they seem to have just used the same ol' helmet mold as the original. Which I'm alright with, but it is surprising. Looks kinda mushy after all these years, and the duller silver and matte eye paint apps look worse than the original, but it's unmistakably the same helmet.

Good Joe's include Beachhead Hawk Leatherneck

Cobra's Serpentor was interesting. Mindbender...interesting.

Zarana was a babe. AVAC. Bats. Cool.

The rest were really lacking.

I think 86 is almost universally regarded as a weak year. (Even though it gave us Vipers!) Probably not bad in its own right, but it pales when compared to what came before and after.
