I mean you could make the argument that the people in IDW tried to make homages to a wide range of characters from throughout Transformers’ history. Basically all of the G1 characters have an important role at some point or another, so when they want to insert a character that seems a little foreign, they kinda have to use something from other continuities (Rat Trap, Rhinox, Knockout, Bulkhead), or create someone from scratch (the Orc who joins Optimus’ search for Monstructor, the Earth Defense human characters, Nautica).
Some of those designs didn’t fit that well, but some of them weren’t supposed to.
Actually, where/how do they use Prime Starscream? I wasn’t aware of that one.
