What the hell happened?
Why did all Overwatch merch just fail so horribly? You can find some of the early Ultimates for as cheap as 7 bucks now.

The Ultimates are better than most Marvel Legends on offer right now in terms of accessories, paintwork, and design. Hasbro just sunk a lot of R&D money into something that didn't sell well enough.

These would've sold like hotcakes if they were available at launch. Fuck, Blizzard even marketed Overwatch with giant action figures. I remember thinking we were getting them when these images first started making rounds.

they really fucked up not releasing figures exactly like this right at launch. People fucking wanted these, I remember very vividly people pre-launch looking at these statues and talking about how fucking cool it would be to actually have these characters as toys. Once we finally did get toys of these characters, most people had already moved on and didn't care anymore. The failure of these lines can only be blamed on Blizzard for dropping the ball not only with getting figures out, but with keeping their game fresh and interesting enough that people still give enough of a shit about it four years down the line.

The fact that NECA killed their lines is almost solely on sales shows there's no real market, despite NECA trying to cash in when their properties were popular..

People overestimate the popularity of overwatch. Its really not that popular, and none of the characters have a real personality.

TLDR: It came out too late, after the game got made into eSports garbage/Korean bait, and then there was the whole Hong Kong mess. A shame as I still like the designs. I actually have Hasbro Tracer and she isn't all that bad for the price.

it's the idea that you have all these backgrounds and lore that you can only get by reading the supplemental material. It's worse that even the more arcadey segments, instead of being a core aspect of the video game like, perhaps a single player EXPERIENCE...is locked behind limited time events.

Look at Battleborne. It failed because it was trying to be like Overwatch but at least it had co-op missions that tried to give you a narrative behind the lore of the universe by letting you oftentimes take part. Blizard thought they were getting something good because they wanted esports to be the next big thing.

Like everyone else has said, a good part of it is that they missed the early hype and popularity, and are left with people who either still enjoy the game and want merch, but there aren't enough of them to support merch, and people who play but don't really collect stuff.

I think it's also worth noting that: A-I think Hasbro made some arguably odd character choices. (Mercy in a two-pack? Is Lucio really one of the more popular healers?) and B-Retailers didn't really give the line a chance. The Target near me had one peg of single figures, and never got the two-packs at all. The local Walmart never got anything. I also never saw any of the Nerf stuff there, and that's why Ultimates wave 2 is showing up for so cheap now: Hasbro made them, and Target/Walmart didn't want them anymore, so they're at clearance stores.
