What makes you assume I have a problem against license sets? They're just not really my jam. A few cool star wars sets is fine, some other licenses manage to have sets that are cool independent of their origins. For instance the I bought the sanctum sanctorum since it's a cool pseudo-modular.

my GF is a big vidya nerd so I got her the Mario starter course, the Desert Pokey, the Yoshi House and of course the free promo set which is a really good size set for free, I was impressed. Anyway we are both really surprise at how fun this is and interesting to change the course. I think I'll get some more desert pokey tonight.

The rest are at least seem passable for how much they cost
Hell the whomp set has a single piece more and is 10$ cheaper

If minifigures from modern licensed sets weren't trying their hardest to be a 1:1 perfect movie representations of characters with excessive prints, classic yellow would work. Otherwise the unrealistic skin tone would probably clash with the hyper accurate details of the rest of the figure.

You can easily put a classic smiley head on massable trooper types though because of their helmets.

I know modifying lego is frowned upon but I still want to share my moc. I found half a hero factory von nebula and a few bionicles at a flea market and used some of the parts to make this stop motion armature. I tried animating gundam and other posable toys but they all had loose joints, this thing is very posable and I dont think it will wear out soon. The ball and joints on this are a bit thicc but it's reasonably anatomicly correct and bang on 1/8 scale. I have another part for the hed, it will be like the hands so I can put on diferent heads and hands. Lego is not a very workable material and I'm sure if you ad up de the parts cost on bricklink it won't ad up to just buying an armature but I like doing thing the complicated way and I got the lot for €5,-. It needs more work before I can wrap it but I'm happy so far

To atone for my sins I donated the nebula box and leftover parts and bionicles to a friend who collects them

Given how many normal bricks crack/tear, especially 1 stud wide ones, the plastic definitely is an issue, too.
Older parts were made of a slightly more flexible one that prevented those from developing in a relatively short time.

Never really noticed this until a couple of years ago. The bricks themselves feel brittle and less solid, eg light shines through more than older bricks. Especially noticeable on the bing bing wahoo sets. They feel like old Chinese bootleg bricks. Plates still feel like they have a bit more give though. Could be a different formulation because they'd get a lot of flexing.

I coincidentally bought the lion dance set recently, and the archway is a thing of beauty - looks great and utilises some creative building techniques. the CNY fair is equally beautiful, but I chose the smaller set for the lions. Not only do you get FIVE of them in different colours, but they're impressively faithful to the real thing. It may just be my favourite set of last year. I grew up in Asia so I may splurge on the new year dinner set for nostalgia. Also, everything is printed, which made me diamonds when I was building.

That means they haven't shipped yet - one of my BnP orders has been in that same status for a while too - once it's actually shipped, it'll show up with a shipped date (pic related)
It'll stay in the "in warehouse" status for a while due to how many orders they are getting, don't worry, it's just waiting to be shipped now

I think licensed figs are too detailed now.

The sweet spot was like... 2009? When (non-clone wars) Star Wars sets had flesh skin but still the all black eyes with not too much detail, but the characters were still recognizable.

Now they’re just so overly detailed and lots of yellow figs have annoying “wacky” design.

I talked to the employees at my local Lego store and they said the new Star Shit was supposed to release on 08/01 but Lego changed their mind and held it back for some reason. They said it should now be 09/01 but Lego told them that if they get the sets early to just put them out and sell them.

Ninjago City and Docks were pretty based. I still have City unopened in my attic. I'm going to open it eventually but my living situation is constantly changing with moves/went back to college/career change. I plan on moving again too. Not a bad thing. I would recommend using a torso with a more consistent default color for painting though. Order some plain white torsos and legs from bricklink for cheap. The one part you are actually interested from this minifigure is the angled torso/legs connector for the thing. Possibly the head but I don't think that it matches "The Thing" aesthetic. The thing to note is that when painting something with moving parts, like minifigures, paint is more likely to scratch or fall off. Be as light as possible. This is why I recommend the cheap white figures, so no real value is lost. Alternatively, find a figure that is the color you want on the sides and legs, and only paint the front of the torso. And THIN YOUR PAINTS. THIN THEM. THIN PAINT.

To add to this, I had plans to build an entire city in the Ninjago City modular style; it had alleyways and a massive courtyard that separates 2 sides of the city - there was going to be a big tree in the middle of said courtyard with bridges underneath it for boats to pass through and minifigs to travel across, the intention of it was to have a gap that separates but also connects the 2 sides of the city I was planning
Never got around to it as I gave up and sold the City Docks and Ninjago City set and moved onto other themes

Nah I'm not that into Japstuff. I think the mold is nice though. And works perfectly for anyone that is into that. It is a really old mold that still works magnificently. Though now that I think about it, the 1998 Ninja Subtheme of Castle was pretty top notch.

This is one of my pet peeves about BL. The only options for condition are new or used. Everyone lists stuff as new and then in the description list the missing parts or damage. There needs to be a complete and a NSIB option. That being said always look at the cheapest one. It's cheapest for a reason, and if it's well below all the others ask the seller if it is complete and undamaged.

It's an armature so it's going to be covered with putty and foam, so I have a fully posable stop motion puppet with good strong joints that will keep up over time

I know this maybe was'nt the best place to post this. But I know the fleemarket where I bought this, it was still there ad the end of the day and people just put the stuff they don't sell in the dumpster. The way I see it, I've got a good sturdy armature for cheap and my friend has a bunch of parts, a box, some booklets en 5 bionicles.

Chima was great. The amount of factions was very ambitious and the jungle animal theme was fresh. The one weakness the latter waves had was the same mistake Nexo Knights did in the stone electric golem wave. Too much uniform color going on in the sets. Otherwise, good design, good figs, and a lot of variety. You had Lion castles, crocodile battleships, Mammoth AT-AT's, a hummer that launched discs out of its mouth and rotating cannons on the sides, eagle mechs, a wolf battle train tank thing, a gorilla mech with a belt-fed cannon that shot bananas, a fire fortress that transformed, some cool bug stuff, a good assortment of unique buildable weapons for the minifigs to battle each other with, constraction figures to portray their powered up forms (they actually are supposed to be that big when they use their chi and power, so they're not even a separate line, they fit in with the rest of the theme), and even the speedor/minigame stuff was cool if you were into that sort of thing. I saw only the pilot for the show, but yeah, it even had its own show. Very ambitious theme that I think is worth your time.

I dislike an age range for the "expert" sets.
It's not like they're super complex to begin with, the only thing that's much for a kid would be scant parts that have fairly precise connections that could easily flex if forced wrong. ( I had the bottom windows of my assembly square pop off a couple times because I didn't have everything JUST right.)
And also making the boxes "serious" is silly as well. It's Lego, bro. If you're so concerned just buy it online, but wherever you go the box/bag is going to scream LEGO in bright yellow anyway. What's especially silly is the "art" sets... And half of them are fucking iron man and Darth Vader.

Just finished a big cleaning project to reorganize and consolidate my Lego. I have a good dozen smaller sets bagged up for donation and larger ones to sell.
I also have a big tub full of unsorted stuff that I'm unsure what to do with. I picked out most of the parts I want, but I don't really think it's worth my time to sort it when I'm trying to cut down and don't really MOC anymore. I'll probably just donate it as well.
Has anyone used Lego's donation process?

5958 Adventurers Mummy's Tomb. It was my first big LEGO set. I had a lot of the Egypt adventurers sets, a clearance outlet in my town had a ton from a closed down toy store.

When I was really young. At my grandmas house she had the really old 1950s LEGO that didn’t have the proper holes in the bottom and the cars were just regular toy cars.

The first time was that I had a full time job and was able to afford it, especially since the store I worked at had LEGO on clearance a lot and I was part of the price change department. I was heavy into licenseshit which I regret. I stopped because nothing was interesting to me anymore.

This year it was the Haunted House set that got me interested. I’ve been getting TLG emails still and I knew it was the one. I’ve got a bit psycho with my purchases since. In a way I never really quit LEGO because I’d buy a few CMF every wave.

Adventurers. The original Ninja sets were really cool too. A friend of mine had the whole series including the big castle.
>What is one thing TLG needs to stop doing?
Stop licensing everything that moves and stop making Star Wars 50% of their product line. Also need to stop with the app gimmicks.

Bring back knights, pirates, regular ninjas, etc. I want more historical themes without stupid app bullshit, TV show tie-ins and other gimmicks. I think their attempts to appeal to adults is smart but give us boomers original themes

Speaking of original themes, moving-anon here with some more pics. After spending the last week dissembling my Star Shit sets, it is time for my final dissembling: Classic Castle. It is my goal to eventually collect every Castle set from 1984 to the end of Black Knights in 1993. I think this amounts to 50 total sets if I don't count 1680 and 1877 separately. This number includes the minifigs packs which will be a pain in the ass to piece together.

Any other classic Castle enthusiasts here? Pic related is a total of 28 sets. One of which is the 5004419 Classic Knights minifigure which came out in 2016 and is a remake of the 6012 Siege Cart. I still have 8 other complete sets that I haven't built yet.

I will post more pics later of the sets for each specific faction or sub-theme along with the numbers and names of sets appearing in the pictures.

My last project before my dark age was trying to make a mech. Finding the Exo-Force Grand titan and later a few ferrari sets on clearance gave me all the new cool pieces I needed to return to it.

I've seen too many themes. I'd say:
80's classic space
90's M:Tron, a small theme without a bad set.
95-05 Dark ages: Classic Ninja. Had fun collecting them in flea markets.
00's ExoForce and fantasy castle
10's so many bad themes an so many themes with too many sets that drop the average. I'd sayNinjago, I bought most japanese styled buildings in Ninjago to fit with classic ninjas.

Pointless licensed set that illustrate an irrelevant movie scene or that are flimsy build to sell expensive minifigs.

For me: Creative box with reduced color palette as part pack for mocers. I want a big box with gray bricks (no star wars tax) and one with earthy colors (tan, dark orange, brown).
For everyone else: Affordable and well designed small sets for in house themes.

The plastic quality issue isn't really a deal breaker. It's mainly just annoying and a bit sad to see a decline in quality that won't be addressed because it only effects a small slice of the fan base that are dedicated enough to notice, yet aren't a corporate simp (for lack of a better word).
I'd say go for it, especially for /m/ content, the barrier to entry isn't high to try. Most mech sets go from $30-70, and you can find good quality used sets on bricklink that only have the mech, not the extra figs and complimentary builds.
What I also like about Lego is that it keeps value. I regularly sell old sets for close or above MSRP and rotate sets I'm ambivilent about in with new sets.

Plastic quality is 'basically' not an issue. It might mean you're buying parts to repair older builds but it's not the end of the world.

It's a pain in the ass compared to NOT having to worry about it though. If it had always been an issue people probably wouldn't care too much, but it's because it wasn't a problem that makes it a sour pill to swallow.

Neat, i like how you build in your own sort of 'era' with early 2000s late 90s faces using just a handful new pieces to spruce things up. The oldschool styling of your cars (both its IRL inspiration as the 1seater 6-wide town lego style) helps with that as well.
And yes the use of bricklink cars as commercial posters are neat.

Here is the original faction that started it all. The Crusaders or Lion Knights depending on who you ask. Lego made more sets for these chads than any other faction.

What is the best Castle faction and why is it Black Falcons? These guys are criminally underrated so much to the point that Brickset and Bricklink lists one of their sets, 6018 Battle Dragon as a Black Knights set! Despite the obvious Black Falcon shield right there. Thankfully, Brickipedia has it correct.

Here are the Forestmen. They live in the woods, secretly hiding out waiting for some of the knights to come through so they can ambush them and steal their golds. These sets are always true kino. The only one I don't really like is the biggest one, the River Fortress.

Here are the Black Knights. Their black castle style set them apart from the Falcons and Crusaders and I think they had the second most sets after the Crusaders. In my head cannon I think these are the bad guys. Although their sets are also true Lego kino.

And last AND least is the Wolfpack. These second class citizens got only three sets and I only have two of them so far. Although some Wolfpack soldiers made appearances in other sets, it seems as a theme they really got the Joan Collins special. Thats it for now /lg/. I don't intend to collect the Dragon Knights sets or the Fright Knights as I think they are gay. I will acquire the Ninja Castle sets because those look cool. I also have the newer Medieval Market Place and Mill Village Raid which I intend to work into these Classic Castle sets as a giant MOC one day.

I'm a recent Castle enthusiast. I don't have many sets but eventually I plan to at least complete some of the factions. You have a good and ambitious goal of getting all the sets between 1984 and 1993.
I'm planning to do the same with all Space sets that came out between 1978 and 1999. I think I'm somewhat halfway there.
The main issue will be room, as each theme I collect ends up having a decent number of MOCs added to it.
Speaking of that I've decided to put together a GreyTron faction. So far the figures are done.

That is a great pic anon. The main collecting issue for me is room also. It is my dream to have an entire room with a giant table dedicated to Lego and have different areas or realms for each theme I collect and integrate all my sets together into a giant MOC. I just don't have the room for that right now and I am moving in with my GF and will actually have less room after I move. Some day though.

My favorite faction is the Black Falcons. But I think my favorite set is the Guarded Inn because it feels so damn comfy. It mixes the war/fighting theme with the civilian life. The it appears the inn is under control of the Crusaders but a Black Falcon is approaching, possibly looking for rest and I think the lady running the inn allows him inside despite the protests of the knights already there.

Yeah, wanted to do a big mine for many years. I had a small forge and a puny throne room before that contest where I made a big hall. This year, I want to have at least 4 16x32 modules: throne room, hall, forge + furnace and mining pit. I might do a stairway, corridor or armory if I dont get distracted by something else.

So I was lowkey dreading picking this up because it didn't come built, and having never bought a set this size unsealed I expected all the parts to just be thrown together randomly, but I was pleasantly surprised to find the seller had parted out colour groups into individual bags at the very least.

It'll take a while to give all of this a clean, but I'll keep you guys updated as I start putting this bad boy together.

The issue is that sets that are priced the same in the US and other markets are priced wildly different here down under.

The most immidiate example is the Attack on the Burrow and Astronomy Tower sets from the most recent HP wave are $100 in the US, but are $149.99 and $179.99 respectively here in Australia.

I noticed this a few years ago with some jurassic world sets and then went looking though prices. I forget what sets they were, but I did end up finding a couple of sets that were the same price in Australia, but different prices in America.

It's alright to display, it looks nice, but I find other modulars like the Parisian Restaurant and Bookshop look far better; Assembly Square is definitely worth getting if you already have other modulars and wanna get it before it retires, even if you just put it in storage for later on (which is what Im doing)

I got this set for half off and display it next to the movie Destiny's Bounty.

I think it is, though desu, it doesn't really have a "special something" you would expect from a special large set. It just feels like 1.75 modulars. Worth getting if you like the modulars, but honestly if it's that or another one you could go with a cheaper set

Some of the sets are actually really nice. If you buy the great hall two times you can turn it into a comfy medival church.

Unexpected windfalls are always appreciated. Seems like there might have been a male cousin in the mix at some point because there's also a handful of Ninjago sets, along with some classic Castle stuff like an old-style horse with barding. Just in time too, because I was starting to run out of some of the main pieces I use for making my megacity.

Here's a new hoverklocki. Need to get some 1x3 plates in this shade of blue because this is about 99% of all the pieces I have in this shade.

Thanks! Nothing terribly impressive going on SNOT-wise but the snotwad on the back end really made me realize how shitty modern Lego tolerances are because some pieces are a little crooked despite being totally legal connections.

Only piece of note is that these are 1x3 light bley tiles attached so the top sides are facing each other

It is a problem, but not enough of the consumer base cares for it to be changed.
Even worse, with the faults they still ARE the top of the industry. Most all third-party and similar building toys are noticably worse. So they're not TECHNICALLY lying, but they know and won't do anything until things get way worse.

oof, i mainly have childhood sets and a shitload of loose bricks and figures from bricklink and fleamarkets

one day i'd like to inventory my pieces and maybe sell some on bricklink

i have that too but with older pieces too, i think it's more that now i'm using more wacky techniques and have become so experienced with lego that things stand out to me more than in the past.
One thing i know for sure is that upward pointing snot brackets have slightly more material at their bottom causing some problems when used in 180 configurations. Not sure if that's for stability reasons or to prevent breakage but i've learned to just accept and work around that whenever possible.
Still, would be better if they just altered it ever so slightly.

I never do this as i'm stupid. But that's why some guy recommended to always order one or two pieces extra on bricklink when they're cheap regular ones just in case someone forgets one piece. Especially if you're a retarded frogposter.

But now i accidentaly ordered 145 pieces more than intended so i might as well kys myself.

spaceship WIP. This one is really all about shaping, more so than color. I think the mix of black and yellow looks good, but the shaping comes first.

Also the cockpit is surprisingly spacious, though I haven't started working on like fully furnishing it yet

Yeah it's been a bit excessive but can't complain about too much klocki!

Here's all the minifig/minidoll pieces I've pulled out so far. Might be a few more I haven't found yet. There was also a Santa's Workshop with the Santa w/ red sack, Mrs. Claus, an elf, and the five reindeer. The printed 1x1 brick reindeer heads are going to make excellent wojtubeasts.

oh yeah the red will be replaced by yellow versions of that same piece, but I will need to bricklink those. All I had was the red version of that piece, and when I saw how good the shaping looked, I was very glad to see yellow versions of that piece exists and are not uncommon.

Yes

Some minifig helmets don't quite fit minidoll heads properly, but minidoll hair and headgear will typically work on minifigs 99% of the time

What a coincidence, my own just came in today

I gotta say, I love the box. As someone who grew up with the standard flatpack box that's been the Lego standard for a while now, its interesting see a set come in this nicer style.
