>>8366559I think a lot of the appeal is the mystery surrounding the cursed tape and the misinformation given to the viewer, so it makes sense that the one you see first would be preferred.
But that also makes further entries harder to make interesting. Then again, that's pretty much the case for any horror movie.
It's not surprising that the other entries are lacking, but it is a bit disappointing that they never really utilized the rapidly changing media landscape.
I remember the internet being a point that's mentioned in further movies but I can't even remember how they resolved it, if they even did. Then again, it's probably too much to ask for horror media to have a brain after the fifth or sixth time around.
