Just so you know, some companies do produce toys as 2UPS, which is a sculpt produced by the artist that is double the size that the toy will be.

I forget the name, but they use a machine (sometimes scanner) that duplicates the sculpt but 2x smaller for the molding process.
It's how they used to pack so much detail into their toys, and some companies still do it the old fashioned way, like 4H.

It's also how they used to make coins.

Not really sure when they changed their ways, but i know Hasbro stopped doing 2ups at least 12 years ago and just had the sculptors do it actual size. Then later on it changed to digital sculpting.

ATT bought Warner Brothers, who was bought by DC back in the 70s, and like any business, they decided it's more profitable to license shit out than directly produce shit.
This is why people fear DC Comics will stop producing comics.

Also, Marvel almost bought DC Comics back in the 80s, because WB started taking charge and like every business, they dislike paying employees and the places to house them.

Also also, i thought DCC was supposed to have been rolled over into WB's licensing team back in 2019? This is why a lot of people thought McFarlane had bought the collectors market license, while Spinmasters took over the childrens toys market (instead they share that license with some unknown split on who can produce what).

Which is to say, little has changed except from some exceptionally shitty comics that are specifically targetted to them.

And it's not like comic book companies didn't try stupid shit before, like the manga wannabe series, polybagged holographic chromed covers, XXXTREME edge, and DARK N GRITTY.

Also, superheroes was one of these gimmicks, but that actually worked. Hence nearly every known popular comic today being a superhero comic.
Superheroes are the greatest. Most popular comics. Most popular movies. Most popular exports AND imports. Absolutely dominates the toy market around the world

Trying to pander to comic book buyers didn't exactly help. It's not like comics that are just a succession of callbacks, shoutouts and "I saw the reference!" moments haven't been making up the core of the writing for years now.

Of course, the issue itself isn't pandering, it's fucking it up. Including detective chimp or whatever else in issue 15 of whatever nothing comic probably made a very minor bump in sales and a wiki footnote, but not much more. The kids sure don't give a fuck.

I wasn't aware that was a thing. Is it supposed to be a comic or show line? I got an email from Boss Fight Studios a few days ago, they're apparently making toys from the show, but as much as I enjoy the show action figures of those versions don't terribly interest me.

I was honestly on board until I heard "$300 each." For like $10-15 apiece, I'd buy those.

I've been here for 10 years and I've realized that not everything needs to have joints. I have so many toys now that I don't even have time to pose them all. I still buy super poseable figures of the ones I know I will want to mess with and create my own poses for, but I'm also no longer afraid of the "big bad statue boogeyman" that this board likes to push.

It's because once you're at the point of buying many 10 dollar a piece statues, especially if you're doing so because you've got too many toys to be bothered to pose them, you're basically just buying nerd tokens. It stops being about quality or gimmicks or anything passionate, it's just shoveling pop culture junk into your trolley. It's only a step away from Superman belt buckles and Tardis candy bowls and about a billion shitty little statues on a shelf you'll never think about twice after you've opened them. That's if you even bother to open them.

But what’s the difference between a cluttered shelf full of statues and a cluttered shelf full of figmas or MLs or whatever? A lot of the people here who cry over anything that isn’t articulated enough to eat its own asshole will just buy figures, pose them, and slap them on a shelf and only repose them a couple times a year. It’s one thing if you’re into photography or making dioramas/customs or something, but I’ve seen enough shelf setups here to know that a lot of the people crying over statues or model kits basically treat their figures the same way as statues. It’s all consumerist shelf candy, there’s no point getting elitist about it if you’re just going to make a cluttered Smash Bros display or whatever.

They really nailed Five, even his pissy default expression is on point. I appreciate that they tried practical effects with Spaceboy because no way would a cgi monster work in this show... but the rest of them (costume design wise) were disappointing.

That's the thing, I'm not blaming the toys. I'm just pointing out that a lot of the people who have an aneurysm whenever a character they want is released as a statue rather than a jointed figure tend to treat their own figures in the exact same way.

I haven't watched the show yet, but I have read some of the comics, and I think this show could really have benefited from leaning into the absurd and campy like Doom Patrol did. I mean, just look at what an amazing job they did with Cliff alone. With that tone and aesthetic, they could easily have just put Spaceboy into a (practical) bulked up gorilla costume and called it a day.

It's too rare that they do, and the projects that usually stick close end up getting their budgets slashed because they didn't make the changes some shithead executive asked for. Nor do they give a fuck because they want to sell their original property under a familiar brand name, it's not like they actually glanced at the property closely. Five, Four and Two were great. I liked One and Three together. They could have really complicated Luther's monkey body, but I feel like it was an effective choice for the medium. Seven looks cooler in the books, but I really liked her in this too. I dunno what Six looks like, but he was OK I guess.

It was not only made for the same demographic, but by a member of that demographic. Doom Patrol was basically Gerard Way's take on Doom Patrol(prior to his actual Doom Patrol run), and Grant Morrison is a friend and mentor to him.

Actually, almost everything that does pander to comic book fans works.

Highest sales has come from books that specifically do that. The Ultimate universe was a big turn around in the 00s. Same with Morrison's XMen. Morrison's Batman. Sales went up.
DC killing the universe and rebooting it is the same thing, complete with bringing dead characters back.
Every event (read: cross overs, where fan favorite characters interact with each other) is what fans love seeing, hence bigger sales.

Problem is that companies like DC and Marvel want to expand sales even more, hence trying to cater to people outside of comic fans. But again, it doesn't really work. Not any more than making comic book movies. Sales only go up slightly when movies come out.
I think the biggest thing is just trying to sell the comic books themselves, like we've seen with Free Comic Book Day and being included with lootboxes, or DC trying to sell their anthology issues at Walmarts and Barnes and Noble.

You can do goofy designs if you lean into it. You just need to have someone at the helm with a strong enough vision to realize that. If you half-ass it, or try to take yourself too seriously, it's going to look and feel cheap and shitty.

I brought up Doom Patrol once already, which has extremely goofy designs and it KNOWS it. It revels in it. And it's a fantastic show for it.

Soft TA rules so we can actually fight the monster: Avoiding or limiting items and wall banging to a context where it's conducive to combat flow (wall-banging fleeing/flying/sleeping monsters, Sonic Bombs for Diablos, Shock Traps when monsters like Rathian or Tigrex keep charging at you). Just jump off when you're mounting the monster instead of wasting everyone's time.

2. Experimentation: No one cares if you die or don't do a lot of damage. Try new weapons, skills or even play naked if you want.

3. Harder quests and Guiding Lands (with high region levels): Stronger monsters, flat zones, no downtime between hunts. We also do normal quests like Alatreon, Arch-Tempered monsters, endgame variants, etc. Just post or ask for what you want.

4. Funposting: As long as it isn't getting out of hand and helps keeping the thread clean, speak your mind.

1. Ledge hugging or playing in cramped areas that make monsters spaz: Defer gratification like an intelligent person and take the second to lure the monster away from there. See the example images.

2. Overpowered tactics: Along the aforementioned wall banging, try to avoid the use of stuff like Spread and Sticky.

3. Mods and damage parsing: It's a room for experimentation and having a good time. No one will take parser screenshots that were taken in this room seriously. If you want to compete with someone, make sure he agrees on it first and actually brings his A-game.
