>>8364707It just starts to build up a bit of buyer’s remorse then- why buy this year’s model when the one next year is going to be better in every way? That’s the problem with trying to appeal to the CHUG collector- if you’re too close to a character concept people will either demand a better figure or demand a rerelease, and if it’s too divergent the CHUG hunters might skip it.
Look at Megatron and Optimus since the beginning of CW- CW Leader Megatron is a big fucking failure, CW Optimus is ugly as sin but at least combines, TR both are cute headmaster triplechanger prepaints of actual figures, PotP Optimus at least has the Orion Pax fun inside, Siege gives them space modes and dirty paint or a Galaxy Force reference and even DIRTIER paint, or weird but cool looking cel shaded designs for the 35th anniversary versions. Then ER comes and gives Optimus a mini masterpiece but fucks up Meg’s earth tank.
Imagine trying to explain all that to someone five years ago and to NOT buy any Optimus or Megatron until now, then imagine someone from 2025 telling us to skip these new garbage versions and wait for the 2024 one, since it’s even MORE accurate and articulate AND has light up eyes AND is cheaper.
See the rabbit hole? We shouldn’t have constant yearly ‘updates’ on character concepts/designs, but to spread them out over several years and to vary the design inspiration up sometimes.
Imagine the line after Kingdom ‘goes back to basics’ with a Megatron and Optimus- but they’re stylized like Cybertron Megs and Armada Optimus. Still clearly the same characters, but not making last year’s figures obsolete instantly.
