Day one purchases for both of these. I don't typically like the playset UCS sets (Hoth was fucking appalling, like 3 rings on the generator was a joke and cloud city was too compact) this look perfect though

This looks neat! Despite Lego sets getting smaller they always manage to throw in a whole lot of fun details, and it's rare we get full buildings with all the walls and ceilings.

Got this set the other day, pretty nice set the figures are decent and the dragon is nice, the only issue I had was the dragons back feet look far too close together it just looked silly so I replace the connectors with mixel joints and it looks much better now and has better articulation

Not a fan of brickheads but damn ive been waiting for universal monsters since short 2000s series of lego studio theme. I still have mummy's tomb and werewolf set with that cool jeep seating 2 minifigs side by side. Missed frankenstein and dracula sets.

Just saw that Lego sent me an email a couple weeks ago telling me that several of the pieces in my order were not supposed to be available but a "glitch" allowed the system to process them. Hopped on bricklink and found a store that had almost all of them marked as new, so I grabbed them and while I was there I picked up a few pieces I wanted to get to finish this off

Your pic is kitbash, the one with light nougat hands also had light nougat print on a chest (a bit greyed out) and yellow handed one had this print, it is noticeably darker then regular minifigure head/hands color

Nintendo announced a new AR Mario Kart game that allows you to create Mario Kart courses in the real world and then play them on your Switch. Add Legos to the equation, and you could build some insane courses for it. Is anyone going to give it a try? It seems perfect for it.

It's hard to say because it take sup a lot of space vertically but also horizontally so both halves can swing open to get to the elevators. That's why some of the dark grey pavement is smooth and some of the tan baseplate is blank so both sides can slide open.

When I claimed that it's "frowned upon", I was worried that bringing up Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit would be deemed "licensed shit." I agree that LEGO Super Mario should've been ordinary LEGO sets, but I was curious if anyone was going to build their own courses for it because AR would allow one to experience one's LEGO creations as if you were in them. No, it's not the same as a LEGO Racers AR game complete with sets, but this is the first game of its kind that makes such a feat possible.

This is a phenominal set for the price. The articulation is really unfortunate, but for the price I'm okay with it. I wish it came with an orc instead of the goblin since I will probably end up getting one or two more if I see it on sale. The wings look pretty good as "skeletal" without the vinyl. I want to try using a variant of them on a MoC. I don't have a plan yet but I want to mod the wingless dragon to be more horse like.

there are a ton of MOCs out there inspired by or utilizing parts from this set and I know that's why, people went back for nostalgia but got fed up with the damn thing breaking all the time

I'm really mad that the orcs don't come in cheaper sets, and the only set with 2 is the bighuge mech that I don't really want. I would army build the shit out of these guys, but for some reason they moved from one bad guy type with 'officer' variant to orcs, goblins, and skeletons. It pisses me off even more that one of the goblins comes with a hood, and they continue to use the short legs that don't move after making medium ones for harry potter.

Haven't played the game, but it has no instructions or rules that I know of. The spinner is essentially move 1-3, and combat is 50/50.

I have that set, but plan to open/build this weekend. I'm very happy with both of the dragons so far, and the smaller game expansion rock set. Only thing I can complain about so far this wave, aside from orc shortage, is the spinner pieces and the life counters taking up part/plastic budget and driving up cost. I get why they are included but when you want to buy the entire wave it gets annoying with the duplicate figs. I really wish they did hair pieces or different accessories on duplicate ninjas.

I'm still on the fence about the mino creature and firestone mech. Also considering buying seconds of the rock and small dragon.

I agree that monsters and halloween is still a selling concept, but dont expect it to be a hit.
That is why monster fighters, scooby doo only work as a one season line. You need more story or ideas for a second batch if sets.

I love this stuff, but the sales are always low. Kids just don't. Series 14 (the halloween one) was one of the lowest selling CMF waves. As much as ID love a part 2, I just don't see it happening. Following Lego's politics it will be more likely just one expensive set, but on the other hand how will you house all those different monsters in one set? The appeal are the figures and the scenery. Kids haven't even seen most of those movies so it would be hard to release more sets and bring them to buy these. Take Frankenstein for example. If you have the laboratory what do you need more as a kid? The windmill would be more directed to adults and sort of an expensive big set with no playing functions or appeal to kids. When it comes to Dracula the kids don't care for the story, creature from the blue lagoon just needs a swamp, phantom of the opera is boring for kids anyway and so on. And if Lego wants to come up with new ideas they wouldn't need the Universal license kids don't care about anyway.

That hair build is genius! How does it look with the mask down? Can the hair be articulated so it stays on top of the head?

I'd say either find a torso with Yellow that will match the belt, or see if they do the belt in pink/cyan to better match the jacket. A purple and yellow torso might match with the eyes of the mask better as well

They've never wanted the brand to die. It's important to them. They've always worked out deals with toy companies to license out the monsters. Lego has a good relationship with Universal, Jurassic World, Minions ect. Universal doesn't have much in the ways of brands to milk, unlike say Disney, so here we are.

Van Helsing might have been a really early attempt but it wasn't the Dark Universe that Universal tried to pull off after Marvel got big.
That said they have been trying to reboot their monster movies into something successful for some time now. I think the new Invisible Man was the first one that was actually successful at it.
It's such a shame to see it all struggle because these are such classic monsters. I would love nothing more than to have them all make a comeback.

Memes aside what happened to the printing quality of lego? I have a red coat soldiar from the last pirate line and all the colours are perfect, I recently got some more from bricks and pieces and the printing was awful the whites were pink, then I got that Harry Potter set with the blue transparent stag, and the sirius black figure had flesh tone on his torso piece but it was practically white, when did it get so bad?

Dont know how big a series need to be, but a series of small sets would be interesting. Mixel was successfull to be small gift for some bucks.
And i remember that there were monster inspired cars and bigfoots. Or just like 80s/90s Superman or Spiderman, why not some dragster or bigfoot cars for some universal characters?

Van Helsing was indeed an attempt at a franchise and bringing back the monsters on the big screen. The movie just cost too damn much. It never got a sequel. Would have loved a Van Helsing crossing over into the Brendan Fraser mummy world. How you go from 1887 to 1926..eh.. idk, but oh well.

Are brickheadz really that frowned upon in /lg/?
I used to see them as part packs (because they certainly are) but the lockdown autism made me actually give a try and build some MOCs with the base brickheadz model.
I ended up making the cast of SINoALICE, since we don't get any official merchandise for the game outside of Japan. Pic related.

Maybe TLG should have put their focus on giving us assorted parts and colors to create whatever the fuck you want instead of just trying to compete against funko pops. Go Brick Me was a step in the right direction but we didn't get a followup to it, and now that set is ridiculously priced on cracklink for what it is.

Would you guys say the Haunted House set from this year is worth getting for $250?
The price seems a little steep to me but I’m a huge Adventurers fan (I have a bunch of minifigs from that series I’d like to utilize) so I’m really tempted to order this when I get my next paycheck.

The Invisible Man was absolute fucking shit.Ignoring the struggles of brilliant scientist and focusing it on woman we don't care about? Fuck off! These are goddamn Universal Monsters, they deserve to be (anti)heroes you fear of but also root for. I'm surpsrised Invisible Man is getting such good reviews while it had even less Universal Monsters soul than Dracula Untold and The Mummy (which by the way was great and relationship between Tom Cruise and she-mummy nailed it despite lackluster movie universe setup) all together.

Marvel managed to sell stupid heroes to pleb, Yet Universal struggles to sell iconic mosnters with tradition pre-dating conema itself. Arghhh.

universal is clinically retarded. they have resources, and they have people too but they do not know how to use them

1. the mummy for example should be produced by tom crise, not only starring him. if he actually produced the movie it would be a hit like mission impossible movies which are produced by tom cruise
2. hire a creative director. universal needs a person in charge, someone to supervise monster movies and show path/direction. marvel has kevin fagie so universal needs someone like this as well. and no, not jason blum - he has no experience with aaa-productions and movie stars
3. hire people responsible for the success of fast and furious series - this is the best example how it started small and now these movies make 1b every time. even a spin of with just few characters hit 700m boxoffice. universal mosnters need to utilize that potential too
4. marketing! marketing! marketing! this is the most important thing about movies, sometimes even more important than movie itself. for example black panther - it's absoltue dogshit of a movie but with brilliant marketing it make 1b and got undeserved oscan nominations and pity wins.
- the mummy should've been focused on african/egyptian lore, myths and legends. they shouldve promoted main actress even more, she was supposed to be a goddamned ancient mummy queen!
- dracula - movie focused on bringing romanian legends and anglo fascination with them. but please this time make dracula a cruel monster as he is supposed to be. no more romance bullshit like in coppolas 90s movie or dracula untold shit
- invisible man, do i have to explain? this could be evil ironman if handled right! maybe witout flying ability but you get the deal, excentric brilliant but sarcastic and sadistic
- frankenstein monster is a tank, slow but unstoppable, not sure about bride tho, suggest something
- gillman creature from black lagoon - sorry guys, i have no idea about this one, not a fan

Its a good set but keep in mind it comes with a disabled minifigure. If thats the kind of thing that triggers you, then don't buy it. I like the set itself, but for $250 I woukd expect it comes with minifigures with working legs.

Just buy sets you like the look of. New pieces will come up and it's one of the better feelings of being an AFOL. Some of the SNOT stuff gets old but there is a certain pattern or style to how modern sets go together more sturdy than stacking bricks on bricks.

I got a Skull's Eye Schooner for dirt cheap recently, but many of the basic white elements have yellowed considerably.
I'm not a big pirates fan so I'll probably flip it, since it sells for quite a bit. That said, is it acceptable to replace the yellowed bricks with new white ones purchased from bricklink?

Both Speed Champions and the marvelshit mechs (Spidey/Thanos/Iron Man) have some of these pieces. Get some, build the intended models to get the hang of them, and you will get a good idea of what you can do with them.

Went to a Target, a very fancy Target with a larger Lego section compared to my own. I was hoping maybe to find the Bespin Duel set. They didn't. I'm sure if that Target didn't have it, my local Target won't too. I ended up buying the AT-AT I really wanted since I can't buy it on the Lego site at the moment, just because I wanted to save a few bucks with VIP rewards. Bespin Duel would have been nice to have, but luckily it wasn't something I really wanted. Just if I see it, I'll get it, but I doubt I it will ever happen.

It's not the greatest, but you can do it.
I usually put the arms fully backwards and then slowly and gently push them out using the arm as a lever.
If someone else has a better way I'm not sure if mine is great long term

The way Lego going into collaboration with all these different companies and trying to 'invade' so many other areas of market segments with advertisements etc., are making me truly frustrated... it is not a toy company anymore which is supposed to focus on making toys that bring creativity and learning to kids. It become now a 'brand' company. This is so different than before. Yes marketing and tie-up are good for the business but there is always a need for a good balance.

Many of the sets now, technically speaking, are focusing towards detail models whereby you build it and display it, and it stop there. Most sets are using small decorative pieces which makes it easy to get lost. Combined with the detailed one-step at a time instruction, I failed to see already how does that even bring any learning or creativity when one choose to buy this toy. Plus, cramping 20 sets of Lego onto a bookshelf in order to display them, doesn't really look beautiful anyway.

MOC is something beautiful, but how many sets out there are geared towards encouraging MOCs? Truly speaking how many percentage of the Lego buyers nowadays build a set, display it, and then longing to buy another one just to go through the same experience again? How many will take it apart and create something new? Lego knows exactly the business and how to earn more and more through encouraging the 'build and display' approach, which undoubtedly is one of the best in the market (no question about this).

There are still quite a few sets that I like and will buy, but other than that I will choose not to be a fanboy and not to get brain washed anymore, it's just the way how I see Lego now (and honestly speaking, how the company has forced me to see it this way in recent years).

How detailed Lego keeps getting really is a double edged sword. Speed Champions and the 3-1 Creator stuff are so satisfyingly jam packed and detail rich for their relatively compact dimensions, they're everything block toys should strive to be.

On the other hand, modern Lego with all its small parts jacks up piece counts like crazy. The large builds, structures or playsets are outrageously expensive and are still often mere facades or technic skeletons in spite of their cost. I like the look of those smaller scale, simpler Creator and Friends buildings but as a whole, Lego's small and medium sized sets tend to be playsets based on comparatively tiny vehicles with tons of play gimmicks for kids.

These vehicles + a few minifigs sets that make up the majority of themes are essentially glorified action figure lines imo, especially if they have a license attached. They definitely don't utilize Lego's full potential as a construction toy but I guess this sort of stuff just sells better. Worst part on those detailed large building is that it makes building your own builds for children kinda demotivating. Back when everything was more plain you could easiely add more to already existing structures or build similar things, but now you're lost without owning millions of specialized parts you can't get your hands on as easy as adults can with bricklink etc.

Damn that hurts. Definitely felt this demotivation when I bought some Lego back then as a teen. Most modern Lego sure ain't friendly to any kids who want to get ambitious with Mocs. In contrast, I was able to make so many different things with a bunch of pre 2010's creator and classic sets (I cant remember if they were still called that back then) when staying over at a relatives place.

Obviously it wasn't like Speed Champions detailed but it was damn fun and sure goes with the look of minifigs better too imo. I felt pretty cheated that my relatives handful of generic Lego sets could out build the licensed sets I had at that time; stuff like snot and specialized slopes have their place but a simple solid brick construction will do the job just as well and more importantly, do it bigger for less.

God Lego is so bad at designing things with internal space. I don't feel like its merely down to requirements for structural integrity. I just don't think they give it much thought, even if the build happens to be a 'transport' in its name.
Maybe kids don't give a crap about carrying many figures? I know I sure loved to cram as many figures I could in any vehicle as a kid. Lego is happy to fill in the empty space with technic riggings and mechanisms or just build over the space instead.

I suppose construction in Minecraft carries over into Lego too but with builds that squarish, I'd rather just use a tub of 'classic' Lego bricks. I can't be bothered with a licensed theme when its something as basic as stacking Lego blocks.

A lot of interesting new elements in the Mario thing. Its rather specialized towards being a level designer though. Can't say I'm a fan of the concept but it definitely encourages more free building than most licensed stuff.

Back then they thought that their toymaking period was over, and the future was multimedia and branding. They realized this wasn't true in the mid 2000s, and have been reaping the rewards ever since. I don't know why they'd go back to making the same mistakes again. Hubris, perhaps?

Wtf is this, how hard is it to just build up a rectangle of walls? It really seems like their set designs operate on a rigid checklist of must haves, everything else be damned. Even the realistic Speed Champions not bothering with maximising internal space when one of their design features was side by side seating in a small car pretty much confirms they dont give a shit about internal space in their builds.

Sure, it's just 0,5-1mm but it's still visible and noticable at that scale.
You basically have to take out the two bricks in the back that make up the seat and lean the minifig backwards.

I feel ya. I'm coming off a dark age from 2012/2013 and theres tons of new weird obscure pieces that make my mind think a lot and really cool unusual techniques they're employing and some current sets are actually amazing design wise...

BUT the extreme amount of licenses is upsetting and even their original themes only exist to promote a TV show (Ninjago, Monkey Kid and even fucking City now) which in turn makes them almost licensed in a weird way.

I also hate how grossly detailed the minifigures are getting with arm, side of leg prints, specialized headwear and a zillion lines and wrinkles on their faces.

i hope so not getting more of the LotR sets is my biggest lego regret. I only got Shelob, Gandalf's cart, the little Helms Deep battle pack, and Mines of Moria. I wish so badly I had gotten all of the sets

I don't see it likely. The only sets based around shows in streaming are Stranger Things and Mandalorian, I don't see WB caring much about that show to the point of shilling. I think Zelda is more likely to be the new licenceshit castle, since next year is the 35th anniversary

There was a ninjago set from the mad max inspired wave with a breastplate armor that had damage marks IIRC. I think it came in the set with a dragon and helicopter.

Pure speculation, but perhaps because ratchet bricks are approximately 4-5 studs long it means the smallest mech that uses them is still pretty tall, and with modern standards for level of detail it puts the price too high? Or maybe with modern standards for level of detail the weight is actually too much for ratchet jointed knees to support it?

I do what you do and hope it sparks a flow state. Sometimes it doesn't and it's really frustrating, because I'm just mashing pieces together already knowing that nothing worthwhile will come out. But I've learned to live with it. Most of the time I do eventually reach the flow anyway.

Look up references of what you want to build. You can't just pull stuff out of thin air unless you're really familiar with the subject. In your case, there's a wealth of movie sets to draw from.
If you didn't find a picture that you could go off of directly, it's also helpful to draw out your ideas. Even if you're not good at drawing, it's a good way to quickly design. You just need to get an image down on paper to guide your building
It's also iteration. Just make sure to take pictures as you build and are satisfied with a look. Nothing is worse than changing something and forgetting if you like it more or less than before.

A lab is a big and vague target. Start by filling in details. What is your mad scientist working on? What sort of machines, wires, tubes, flasks, test animals, etc. will he need? What kind of space will that take? Do you need to section off separate rooms?

I went ahead and got this set and really enjoyed building it. I also really like the idea of giant skull fortresses so it was right up my alley.
I know it's a gameboard but I think it holds up well as a playset/display piece as well.
Though I ended up having to make some modifications to the mechanisms. Mainly adding a guide to the cage rope so it wouldn't move out of the pulley, and adding weight to the cage and lava steps so that they wouldn't get stuck and not lower. It's kind of silly that they didn't add the extra 6ish pieces to make it work that much better. Also the crank(stone pillar on the left) is free floating besides one 1x plate holding it, so I'll have to shore that up so I don't rip the whole section apart trying to crank it
Gonna play the game tonight but I'm basically making my own rules based on their super simplistic ones. I'm kind of disappointed that the "full" game is needlessly complicated. I would have rather them just expanded on the basic rules with light roleplaying elements.

My organization is terrible, so I basically just pick out a few pieces from my lego bin, find a design that I like, and then from there I can add to it or incorporate it into something bigger.

Most of my preplanned builds end up looking like something out of a 8 year olds minecraft world

I'm part way through building this myself and amvery impressed. I can see where it makes some sacrifices as a play set to also be a game. What's crazy to me is just how much of the parts budget goes into the spinner, health counter stands, and side paths. You get a pretty good amount of figs and accessories too. They somehow managed to get the main building detailed on the outside with a good amount of space for detail on the inside without using too many parts. I like the skull mountain better than some of the 70-80$ sets. The side stuff isn't as detailed but it easily modifiable, or combined with the game parts from other sets, or even just removed. It makes me wonder what the minecraft theme would be like if they weren't forced into 2x2 blocks that make it so over priced. Great set that I'm shocked didn't cost 20% more, especially after monkie kid.

Well, I assume a big cost saver is that the mountain is basically just two big BURPs, but there's enough bricks on top that you don't even notice.
I also liked how simple the right path is. It's small but it gives you a guide to make your own matching path with as little pieces as possible. I just wish they gave more extra game spaces
I'm tempted to buy the other jail set if it wasn't filled with three more ninjas to one orc. Which is kind of ridiculous for a $30 set. Also unfair to the enemy...

I refused to watch it because I can't see how you can competize creativity, and I'm sure I'd be sickened by whatever "challenges" they cook up, and then super pissed by the judge's dumbass decisions.

My joke-response to everyone who said that my son and I should enter the competition is, and I encourage everyone to steal this and use this against their similarly shitheady families; "maybe we'd be guest judges one season"

I'm not going to buy a lot of them, but there's a lot of cool sets this wave. Rhino mech, skeleton dragon, 20 dollar solid dragon. There's some ones like that, but I'm glad it's more than sets all with monster truck wheels you can't use for anything else

i think they should have just kept the baddies to goblins and orcs, im not a fan of skeletons with stupid big heads, they have already done them in previous waves and now we have 3 types of baddies in one wave meaning you dont get many of each without buying multiple of the same sets ending up with an absurd number of the same ninjas or buying them from cracklink, bricks and pieces have the all the parts for the goblins except the hood with the ears but when i looked they dont have any orc bits for sale

Are they new from this wave? If it's a "best of" thing I understand the variety, but I don't think it is.
I don't like the big skulls, except for the black ones, since they feel more like separate "demons". The big skulls also work in the braizers. Gives me mortal kombat vibes

The orcs' and goblins didn't get anything new. I think they blew their budget in the new ninja armor, sorcerer's mask/hat, and new skulls. That at least explains the skeletons. I'm mainly upset that out of the 4 orcs the only variation is one doesn't come with armor.

Interested for what? I ended up using a regular dice, the spinner was kind of hard to spin. If you don't put a 1x1 piece in the center it tends to stay upright. Unless you really crank it, then you have a huge piece of plastic hurdling across your table
It also comes in a good amount of the sets, even the cheaper ones. I think you get one as long as the set has a focus on the scenery pieces

bite the necks slightly or use some pliers to kinda deform them a bit, just enough to tighten the grip, i did that to quite a few of my figs and it works pretty good, the key is to just to a little bit, you might not see it but the difference is there. if the difference is visible you went too far
