That's the tally so far. Haven't they always talked about expanding the license? As long as it doesn't conflict with the minis I think they'll be ok with it. People have speculated Warhammer Mega Construx, but the mini figures would be similarly sized, also well detailed, fully painted, variable weapons for customization, fully articulated, and there would be buildable terrain all for relatively low prices, which is why I don't think these would happen. They would be usable as game pieces just as well, and GW probably wouldn't want the players of the game to have such a close option.

No, but depending on the mini a MCX Mini is probably around a cm or 2 taller. I'm sure with buildable terrain and assumedly special tiles and bases for the figures, players could easily use these to play the game. And the fact that they'd cost far less than the minis do and would be fully painted (which I'm sure is a hindrance to more casual folks) probably means they wouldn't want their main product to look expensive in comparison.

Yeah, the rules wouldn't be difficult to adapt to a slightly larger size. If Mega started making Warhammer stuff I know I would do the legwork to never have to buy GW's overpriced shit again.

They are 7" tall which is a bit short for 1/12 scale. Primaris marines are supposed to be over 8ft tall. I guess they scale well with figmas which are on the shorter side as well.

I'd be 100% on board with the next 2 figures if they weren't $100 per, and another toy company also didn't have the franchise. Like damn, they look good, but after buying the Ultramarine and then having Mcfarlane announce what is almost the same figure for $80 less, I think I'm willing to roll the dice. If these were $50 I'd probably bite the bullet, but not for $100 each.

Willing to drop a lot just to repaint it. I'd go with the yellow, you could probably just paint over it, though I assume you'd prime it.

There's always this you can use to repaint, at ~1/6 of the price. Must as well just keep the Bandai one as is if you want to get it.

Probably the Loyalists. If they do the Traitors they will probably be more expensive because there is no standard base design for the chaos marines. Not to mention these are Primaris too, which unless I'm wrong, the Traitors don't have.

So lets assume that the McFarlane line makes money and they make more figures. Lets also assume they make actual characters instead of just army builder (not that they shouldn't do that too) what are some actual characters you guys want made?

To expensive when it came out and waaay to fucking expensive now. Would have been nice if, seeing that they went with Bandai, that they made model kits instead. They could give them extra parts so you can make them standard marines, or add extra bits to make them veteran marines or captains. Stuff like purity seals, iron halos, more ornate pauldrons etc. If they did that I would probably buy enough to make an entire company.

Is the sergeant really an army builder? I guess there'd be more than one on the battlefield. I'd like the leaders of factions, like those Necrons with the royal looking garbs and the Marine without a helmet with tons of details flowing off of him with the sword. I assume we'll be getting the Sister from the trailer in the next wave, and perhaps the regular Marine painted up. Evidently I don't know a whole lot about Warhammer, so in terms of named characters, I can't say much about that.

Is anyone really surprised? Granted GW could be full of shit but apparently these are made to order, the Smurf was already pushing $100 with shipping and they made almost 10k of those things, I doubt they'll be producing as many for the more niche Chapters. Personally I'll pass on these and take my chances waiting for a Blood Angel or White Scar release to happen.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems the only way to get an unpainted blank is to buy the 50 bux chase set. They're not being sold by themselves, at least not yet.

Also, you guys looking to get the blanks probably own an airbrush already or at least have the right colors of rattle sprays on hand, no way somebody's 100% brush painting this figure unless they have they're pro as fuck. Everyone else looking to make this their first custom ever should expect to spend another at least $30 to 50 in hobby supplies.

I am probably hoping for too much here, but...I really, really hope they've engineered this in a way that it can easily be popped apart for painting. It would be really fucking stupid to sell this for the purpose of painting and have parts glued in or inaccessible due to sculpt getting in the way.

Arms are held in via ball peg into the torso, legs are a peg and socket into the hips, torso and waist are ball pegged, head is ball pegged, hands and feet are pegs and sockets, shoulder pads are likely ball pegged. If things are tight a little heat will do the trick. Obviously you won't be breaking this thing completely apart, but you should be able to bring it down quite a bit.

I'm going to assume that they will be single jointed due to how thick the limbs will be, and based on my Doom Marauder (who I've not actually tried to pull apart), both the elbows and knees are able to swivel, so I'd imagine they're connected to a socket, so it should be possible.

We'll have to wait and see. Many customs are done up without taking anything apart, so it should be possible, if a little annoying, if those parts can't come out. If they can, great, but if they don't I won't lament about it too much.

Also, thinking about Marauder and the Marine's big feet, it may be possible that the feet are just ball and sockets. Either way they'll be able to pop out.

Idk if I'm just too lenient but these are articulated action figures, I'm surprised at how much the pin holes seem to be bothering some people. Is it an aesthetics thing?

That said, with Hasbro introducing pin-less figures, if there's one thing Todd likes doing it's showing up (or trying to show up) the Hasbros and Mattels of the world. I wouldn't be too surprised if he starts using pin-less tech before too long. I honestly can't say I'm too bothered by it either way, but if it's either or, then none would be good.

Mass retail action figures for $20 should have the joints setup used by figures usually around $50-$70? Color me surprised that they don't.

I doubt the cost for the joint setup is much more than the pins, if even, so who knows, maybe they will at some point, but one company will have to set the trend, because pegs and holes have been around for a long while and it doesn't seem like that's changing (besides the whole pin-less thing, but it's just another dimension of the same thing).

The problem IMO is that disassembling the figure to paint it is going to be kinda tricky, and there's no way of puttying over the pinholes and still having it be able to come apart before painting. Plus they just look ugly as sin.

Hasbro is introducing their pinhole-less knees and elbows on ML. Others will follow suit in time. It's certainly a cost thing, at least for figures where they don't reuse the same mold over and over. They'd have to make unique elbow and knee assemblies with a fair few parts each each time, as opposed to two holes, a middle part, and 2 standard pins per elbow and knee.

I'm sure they could do it, and if they want to keep their same profit margins, perhaps cut back elsewhere or charge a bit more.

It's funny that say Bandai can produce that base Goku for 3500yen, and those protagonist Kamen Rider for 3000-3500yen each, then for the different characters but equivalent number of faces and hands, they end up costing 5000-6000yen or more. They're obviously still profiting from the 3000yen figures, it's just that they want those higher profit margins for the rest. Don't even get me started on GSC and Figma which price gouge to a laughable degree for most of their figures.

I kinda expected they were taking a bath on figures like ASROE Goku. It was an "introductory" figure intended to draw people into the line. It's a tried-and-true marketing move, and it's worked--I've seen more than one post by people picking it up from Target and being amazed at the quality/intending to buy more. So you could well be right, maybe it is possible to still make a tidy profit on a 3500jpy SHF...but I also wouldn't be surprised if they were losing money on those.

Not sure which to order. Yellow is more my style, but the Imperial Fists deco is so boring and bland. I'm not that into green, but the Salamanders colorway is definitely more striking, with the orange eyes and flames. And especially the orange gradient behind the flying buttresses on the bolter, that shit looks incredible.

Hmm. When I think too hard about this I start to wonder if I need one at all--after all, I didn't feel THAT gutted when I missed out on the Smurf. Maybe I should just try to be happy with a McFarlane Marine and my extra $80 to spend on other stuff.

I thought the winged skull was too overemphasized on these but it's starting to grow on me. I also like how it managed to look the helmet more menacing compared to the Bandai marine. It's not the Mk VII/VIII helmet but you can see it trying its best.

I know there are small differences in the armor for the Primaris and the older standard Marines, but I'm sure once these are out people will make headcasts for them. Hell I'm almost considering buying a 3d printer to start making shit myself.

Off the top of my head, to convert it to say, a standard Mk.7, you need to chop off the collar and hip skirts and those ridges on top of the kneepads. Reshape the kneepads a bit to make the tops pointy. Sand down the forearms and thighs to make them smooth, and fill in a bunch of panel lines and vents with putty. Maybe chop out the ab plate and replace it with three cables. IIRC the backpack needs a bunch of work too. And of course, a new head.

This all sounds kind of exhausting. I hope I'm up to the task when these hit. Also, I'm kinda considering getting a 3D printer too, but I feel kinda dumb since I don't have much modeling experience yet. I have ambitions to get better and start making my own parts though.

As one of those artists, lemme tell you, it's a real cat and mouse game out here. Yeah, lots of us are doing it, but I have friends that got hit with C&Ds and were left with hundreds of dollars of merch they could no longer sell for fear of a lawsuit. This is an entirely fair tradeoff, since the Salamander got a custom bolter detailed for their chapter, with the custom color scheme and flying buttresses.

So I am guessing the next marine releases will be the melee chapters Space Wolves and Blood Angels and they come with a chain sword. Since the Salamander gets a customized bolter and the Imperial Fist has the auto bolter.

That''s Bandai's basic MO for most of their figures. I mean shit, a lot of RDs and SHFs don't even get topcoat, you just get straight up bare plastic. On one hand, not-fully-painted means less chance for paint scrape while posing. On the other hand, it looks and feels kinda cheapo.

Man, I already know I'm gonna be disappointed. Space Wolves armor needs that real lived-in character. Bone necklaces and talismans and amulets. Warpaint. Scraps of scrolls and seals tacked on everywhere. Hanging pelts and tails. Leather goods.

But nah, all that would take way too much effort, so what we're gonna get is a slate grey-blue armor with one yellow shoulder pad and kneepad, and that's it. Guess it's on me to custom up a proper one when the McFarlane DIYs hit.

Marvel Legends always wins out in the end. For whatever reason SHF can't get their shit together and slop the paint, always screw up the proportions, and man the faces are just pain. None of the joints are aesthetically pleasing or sculpted with the flow of the figure, looking more like someone jammed a rubric cube into an elbow or a knee bend. I will give them props on packaging desing, accessories, and the proper use of shading with color instead of just black. They could really use washes and seperately molded sections however instead of trying to force a sculpt to a solid molded section, especially on hard plastic. Tennis ball wrist joints are pure pain to look at and it's like they looked at McFarlane figures and went "Hey that's a good idea."

They honestly should. The lines are very complimentary, from what we know. But of course people on either side get mad at each other. When people say the McF look around as good the Bandai folk try to tear them down, perhaps because they want the high asking price to be justified, then the McF people try to retort that the Bandai are overpriced, etc. Just be friends y'all, grab both, or either.

I like Bandai's engineering and how razor sharp their moldings are for armored characters but I will say that space marine felt overpriced. It's a solid release but the asking price is making people want more out of it. I think grabbing a bandaimarine, then mcf marines to army build makes the most sense to me.

"Gears of War ripoff" is something that was thrown around a lot when that game was released, for many reasons (Third person view, Chainswords vs. Lancer chainsaws, Orks vs. Locust, the beefiness of Space Marines vs. the chunky Gears cast, etc.). You can still even find old articles written on this. But any 40k fan knows how old the franchise is, predating Gears by almost 20 years, so pretty much all of these comparisons are just silly. In fact, one could even make the argument that some of Gears' DNA was probably sourced (whether consciously or not) from 40k.

Definitely gonna need a 3d printer to make different weapons for them. Just feels like you'd need to have more than a basic Battleline squad. Need a Heavy Support and an Apothecary at the very least. And you'd have to make the Deathwatch Pauldron for each of them too.

Not that fellow but I gave Mythic Legions a chance, I bought quite a few of them, but I just really, really was not impressed by the figures. Yes they look nice with nice metallics and the like, but the figures feel limited, the articulation doesn't feel good, it gets loose, the paint chips, it just basically wasn't much of a fun time. The idea is great, but the execution, at least for me, is lacking. I know some people don't mind the MOTU Classics like articulation, but it feels so outdated at this point.

I haven't had as bad of an experience as you, but again, I admit that the line definitely has some issues. I still feel rather fortunate to get it though, since for literally years and years we didn't really have ANYTHING in the 1/12 fantasy realm. So yeah, it could be better, but considering the alternative, I'm pretty grateful for Mythic Legions.

Mythic Legions had outdated articulation before Mythic Legions existed.
It's basically the same shit since the Minotaurs and they were outdated when they were first released.

And yeah, their joints get very loose and have extremely delicate accessories where just falling onto the shelf they're standing on can break them.

If I had to guess, it'll be a while before we get any unique characters. When the line is young, it makes more sense to bring out generic army builders that people will buy multiples of and customize like crazy. This means for any given faction we'll probably be looking at vanilla choices for some time--Ork Slugga Boyz, Tyranid Genestealers, Tau Fire Warriors, etc.

I'm relatively new to customizing, but wouldn't a varnish be sufficient to avoid paint rub? I did recently paint a sword, used a brush and applied 3 thin coats of varnish, and it's mostly intact. A couple spots of the base color came through because it was a tight grip, but I assume if I went with say, 5 coats, it'd have been fine, no?

Varnish isn't strung enough for constant friction. Acrylics have a thickness to them - when they dry, they are like a very thin layer of plastic. Constant friction on tight joints will always produce paint rub.

It's extremely strong. Works on plastics you thought previously unpaintable. Comes in many different colors and can act as a primer if needed.

Thanks for the input (I'll look into that Krylon too). What do you guys think of putting a thin layer of superglue? Long time ago I used a dab of superglue on some elbow and knee and neck joints (I may have sanded the joint a bit, I don't recall) and paint never scratched off those. I know it can leave some residue, and of course make a huge mess of things if it touches anything, but it seems like if you're careful and let it set, that there won't be a problem. Thoughts?

I would not trust superglue for anything but where it can be hidden.

It's just easier to use a gloss varnish if you really want a detailed paint job and reapply it every so often.
Anything that's handled gets recoats, even kitchen countertops and floors made of concrete or stone.
Fact of life.

Krylon Fusion is great if you just want color and leave it as is.
