How do you figure? Hasbro gets artists to draw original art for the boxes of most if not all of their collector lines, Mattel has artists draw original art for their Origins and MOTWWEU figures both as a banner and artwork for the cross sell. Feels like a lot of effort is actually being put into boxes.

Companies are better at it now that that the 2000s when companies were cheapening out and using lame preapproved merchandising copy art, but even now you don't see as many crazy elaborate drawings and unique interpretations in package art like we used to see. Part of it has to do with digital art not feeling as organic and charming as the old hand-drawn and painted stuff.

Photoshop and style guides killed art in merchandising as a whole. Why paint anything if you can pull from a folder of stock art ? I think more so than any point in history, being an artist now is pretty much unsustainable.

It's a different animal really. Old package art was laboriously painted, inked, or drawn by hand and went through various stages of polish before the companies were happy with the outcome. Nowadays, with the advents of digital coloring and drawing, stuff like that is easy to fix in a pinch. It makes the end result less satisfying. It's all too easy.

They usually only plaster pictures of the toy youre buying on teh box and call it a day.

Many western companies put effort into their packaging and cards, commissioning new art for them.

personally, i'm not a fan of Hasbro's current stuff, beause it's shaded over. Their older cards and boxes were much nicer. Full color and given a prominent space.

It should make the product its selling look bombastic. Everything is a stale stock photo now, and on the rare occasion it isnt, the coloring is flat and the art is stylized for no real descernable reason. It adds nothing because it doesnt have to. The people making toys now know that because theyre selling to morons like you who eat up the same shit. But hey that's fucking life. I know why box art is ass and I accept it. digital art more times than not has a flat look to it. If you can look at something and say it looks digital, its a problem. There are outliers were its so obviously digital that it can be its own interesting look but those are far and few between and often times just feel lazy.

The NJR box art is what made me fall in love with Zoids. I loved them already as a kid from the New Century Zero localization but the way the box art always told a story, especially in the NJR, really grabbed me. I'm glad they continue and refine that tradition in the HMM box art, but that shouldn't be too surprising since Mercy Rabbit also did art for Tomy.

When I look at something like the HMM DCS-J from this year it feels like an evolution of zoid box art tradition. They also like to sneak in a bunch of references, like this one is either a reference to or an outright depiction of the operation where the Republic steals the Liger Zero prototype. Even the battlerover shows up on the HMM Command Wolf AC's box.

Because that's how i used toys as my escapism. As soon as i took my toys they werent some cheap plastic figurines. They were cool badass warriors from another world or something like that. With epic music and adventures.
