Shipping questions and discussion thread.

Does Mandarake have any provisions for shipping very small items, or is it ALWAYS on of their two box sizes? I am planning on ordering a very small, flat, and light item that could ship in a bubble mailer (or even an envelope possibly) and want to know if I'll be charged a ton to ship it.

They usually ship small stuff in these envelopes. I buy thin books there all the time and they only resort to boxes when the stack is at least one inch thick or more.

Is Mandarake shipping to the US at all right now? Or are they like Ami Ami with DHL being the only option? I'd really hate to pay $30+ just to ship a couple of light weight plushies or gachas

It is DHL only right now. They explain the weighing options on their website. If you buy thin small things like cards, it ends up being cheaper like >>8461147 said, around $1700 yen.

You will probably pay more than $30 for plushies unless they're really small (like palm of your hand sized). DHL is volumetric weight so a large, but lightweight package will end up being quite pricey.

It's not a great time to be buying stuff from Japan if you're in the US. Try Amazon.co.jp maybe, I was informed the other day that they have a special deal with DHL that makes it a little cheaper.

Nadeko Songoku, both figmas are from the Monogatari series. They're standard size boxes from all I can tell.

Ordered from Nakano, which is where the auction item came from. That's why I was a little confused. With the shipping it's still cheaper than buying 1 of them over here, but EMS would seal the deal on buying a lot more.

But good to know about Sahra, I've seen some deals there but a higher shipping means they're not worth it, currently.

I ordered from Nakano as well. All I can think of is that two stacked Figma boxes are just a little too big for their smallest box and got bumped up a tier. SHF boxes are pretty slim so it was easy to fit two in there.

Most of the big shops are still perfectly willing to ship to the US even though Global is gone. Most of them are just holding packages until cheap shipping becomes available again, so as long as you can be patient you can still get your toys at cheap prices.

eBay sellers have been overpricing Japanese goods aggressively in recent years while Manda actually got cheaper when they stopped charging the 500 yen tax for orders less than 5000 yen total. Maybe your mileage might vary depending on what you're buying and where you live but for me the same items are usually at least 5-10 times more expensive on eBay than they are on Manda, and shipping is about 2-3 times more expensive (when it's available at all).

It's probably because I'm looking to buy ball joint dolls and they're expensive to ship. Im always interested in fixing up the "junk" dolls on there but shipping makes them cost as much as an equally busted doll from the states.

Pretty much. They get stuff from a studio or a relatively rare book / sketch/ promo piece, probably auction. You can just got that page sort the newest.

The rest of their items - search for them, add them to a watchlist with alerts, and then double check your payment method. I've got a warning on my account because they didn't respond to my request to change payment. Credit Cards without 3D security will be denied (all 3 of my cards we denied), so just use paypal. Paypal is great unless you're getting 18+ stuff. They need a card for that.

Your mileage definitely may vary depending on what you're buying. But generally Mandarake is good for finding obscure shit that eBay has none of and knows nothing about.

If you collect larger BJDs and live in the US it is a particularly bad time to be using Mandarake since DHL is terribly expensive for large items.

Wouldn't really work out anywhere except maybe LA and NY, Mandarake is fueled by collectors selling back their toys. Most places in the US just don't have enough collectors of high quality Japanese toys to keep something like this afloat.

The closest thing I can think of is Jungle in LA, which does buy toys from collectors and resell them, but it's only a small part of their operation and the rest of their store operates like normal, with retail merchandise being shipped over from Japan.

It would be just more focused on western collectibles with some Japanese ones showing up once in a while, after all Mandarake of Japan does have some western items. I think the bigger problem of Mandarake in the US would be the average condition of items. The great thing about Manda is that Japanese collectors take great care of their things and buying from them often doesn't feel like it's second hand, but with US Manda you'd have to expect a lot more damage and wear on average.

That's a problem too. Even with the "geek renaissance" of the 2010s, there still aren't enough toy-collecting nerds to keep a shop like this running in most states. Even if we mainly focus on western toys.

And yeah, a lot of Western collectors treat their toys like garbage. And if you instituted a strict vetting policy like Mandarake, you just know some collectors are going to just scream and whine and demonize them on Yelp. US society just isn't civil enough even for a simple concept like this.

We have several used goods stores in my state. The amount of shit and just horribly kept stuff is crazy. The two "toy exclusive" places have a better caliber of stuff, but there are still those slackjaws who come in and expect their power of the force collection to be some unique gem. Then they throw a hissy when they get a low offer. Don't get me wrong, there's still garbage at these places, but at least they price their crap decently.

Even with the shipping cost, I'll take Mandarake's "box damaged" versions because that usually means "small dent on box that will be in my closet while figure is displayed."

I don't even think there are enough western collectables to put together a store from period. Us Mandarake would be overrunn with funko pops in 3 days minimum as people rush to dump their worthless collections somewhere. Most other western toys are playline stuff you can just buy second hand on eBay at any time. The only other high end collectables I can think of are hot toys and sideshow shit but that would be spread so thin across the us you wouldn't see much in a store.
