I just picked this up. My dad wouldn't let me have girl toys as a kid because he thought they'd make me gay, and now he has a 34 year old son shamefully escaping a store with a Gwen Stacy action figure.

Did your parents prevent you from collecting anything as a kid?

My parents didn't ban anything outright (although they would not let Barney in the house), but they did try to steer me in a hetronormative direction (Superhero toys, Buzz Lightyear, James Bond Jr.). I had a lot of older girl cousins and would play with their old toys when they weren't around.

Every once in a while I get the urge to buy something really "girly". Once I went and bought a bunch of Disney Princess toys, and I've hidden them away from my family and only look at them in the middle of the night when every one's asleep.

My mom let me have boy and girl toys growing up (my favorite GI Joe was Lady Jaye). She kind of knew I was gay as a kid but tolerated it because I liked both boy and girl shit and as such, had cover of explaining it away to people who noticed it.

That said, I bought Gwen with the full intention of ditching the Gwen head for MJ's on dislay. Then I realized I had a Green Goblin/Jackyl and could do photos of Gwen cucking Peter for Norman/Miles.

When I was 6 my dad got me a Swamp Thing Transducer set which my mother thought was too creepy and threw it out. She was also worried about me collecting Kenner aliens because she thought they were evil-looking and might influence me to be evil somehow. As an adult collector I have things like Sozai-Chan and waifu figs at my place, so when my mother saw my import figs she said she was concerned about my collecting all these scantily clad and naked girl figs. Grew up as Jehovah's Witness, parents prevented me from owning anything demonic or magical in nature. Skeleton warriors were a NO for example, and I always thought they were pretty dope.

My mom was the same-ish. I wasn't allowed to have a skeletor as a kid, even though I loved skeletons and watched the skeleton dance cartoon from disney on the regular. Eventually I got the battle armor one as a gift from my godfather. It was so tight. Later she even was kind of wary about ninja turtles because they "looked like monsters".

Yeah, "luckily" my parents got divorced and my mom understood I didn't want to BE the girl characters, I wanted to FUCK the girl characters. I remember her telling my dad that and it was a huge relief to him. It still didn't change what I was allowed to bring over to his house, but it at least kept him from freaking out.

Not really, It probably helped that I used the few female lego figs that I had as damsels in distress during play. If anything what really worried him was how quickly my interest in female figures evolved into interest in real girls at age 10. Sooner or later I would ask every girl I liked to be my girlfriend... wich eventually got me in trouble with the nuns running the school I attended and prompted my parents to have a serious chat with me about "waiting until you are an adult to do adult stuff"...

I was usually disappointed that they didn't have the female characters in toylines when they were important characters. I never really bought the "boys don't want any GIIIRRL characters!" line. It was probably more stuff like OP's situation, which was/might still be pretty common. I had a ton of Spider-man figures growing up, but they had no Mary Jane to save. I had to just pretend she was there lol

The way boys and girls play is different also. Girls tend to project themselves onto a character, while boys will usually be more the overall narrator that controls all the characters instead of a self-insert. At least that's how I played.
