You guys do realize that you can just prime and then paint the regular marines in whatever colour you want, right? There's an almost 100% chance of paint scraping off down to the plastic so the only different is whether you're going to get blue or grey showing in the joints.

If you’re really looking for some idea of the construction, I’d recommend picking up a McFortnite figure on the cheap from Ross if you have one nearby, and just breaking I up.

Less than zero chance of anything other than MkX or whatever the fuck the Primaris armor is getting made. GW hasn't done so much as acknowledge that normal marines ever existed other than the japanese blind box releases and Funkos. And both of those were in the works/releasing before 8e wiped the slate.
Marines are dead and gone, we're never going to have the company make anything new for them or of them ever again.

I'm working on my marine and decided to give him a a MKV left pauldron, I know that the chapter marking should move the the right pauldron but I'm confused as to where the battlefield role markings go. The ultramarine in this pic seems to have his role and chapter combined but the iron hand has them on his knee pads, I've seen more pics with set ups similar to both of these and was wondering if there was a correct way to do it or if it's just whatever I want.

So its a bit of trial and error, im in the ballpark of 390% bigger than a 28mm helmet. I didn't model these, but I am editing them to make them hollow so they will sit on top of the neck peg. I'm still trying to duplicate the original slot, but these aren't too bad if you don't plan on doing anything other than display, i have them held on tight with a little putty.

Since I didn't model them I wouldn't feel right selling them but I can look into posting an email if people want me to mail them some to US addresses

I don't actually own the Bandai so I can't speak for it in person, but I can tell you that it's soft shaded with an airbrush. That is inevitably going to look mushier in photos than an unpainted sculpt.

yeah, i know how shading works, but you can tell the detail work is much more intricate on the McFarlane.
Much more gothic, by enlarging some of hte details.

Not him but hard plastic holds detail better than rubbery crap, subby. Gummy shit deforms super easily even if the basic sculpt is tight. It's the reason if you're sculpting it helps to mix 50/50 Green Stuff and Apoxie Sculpt- pure Green Stuff tends to "round" at hard edges and is kinda pliable. But you'd know this if you didn't have a grudge against "weeaboos" (read: people with higher budgets and standards than you).

McFarlane's used gummy plastic forever and their figures still hold up to this day.

With all toy manufacturers at the level they're at, everything they produce is done using high pressure injection molding and the types of plastics that can be used for it will always produce equal amounts of detail no matter what. If you want finer detail, you'll need to go through a certain resin casting that's done by hand, because they're going to be much more delicate.

With Bandai, McFarlane, Mattel, etc etc, the amount of detail you can get is purely up to the sculptors/designers.

PVC 'gummy' plastic will always hold better detail than ABS hard plastic because of the directional release of the mold. Rigid plastic has to release out of the mold one way, meaning any greebles, cuts, or designs have to be parallel to the opening edges of the steel mold otherwise the mold won't open and the plastic will be locked inside. Or the mold has to be multi-piece which China rarely used because of cost and the fact you'll have obvious seam lines even when lined up correctly.

PVC plastic on the other hand can have designs that run any direction, as long as they're not too long like shoulder spikes, because they can be peeled from the mold while warm, unlike ABS which has to be cooled in the mold to prevent warpage when it's removed. PVC soft plastic is also easier to design a figure from and doesn't require an internal structure as complex and easily breakable like ABS, resulting in a less expensive, more detailed, and more durable toy.

Eh, most of the differences is pretty much the handling of the plastic after molding. So yeah, PVC is faster to get shit done, but nothing oyu said really affects molding quality. Theres a lot of ways around creating the molds to ensure you get the most out of them.

Also, look at Spawn's belt buckle. Look at how gummy and blunt the teeth look. They look like shit. So either Maccy F's can't sculpt for shit or the plastic they use doesn't conserve detail well. It's one or the other.
And this is before we get into the longevity problems of gummy plastic like warping. Try and find a ToyBiz "true form" Ringwraith whose crown hasn't bent to shit by now.

You pretty much just said it, different price points. They're not competing, they both make a similar sized product, so they're in fact fairly complimentary. People who don't want to pay the high prices of the Bandai figure have the McFarlane figures they can get, and those who get the Bandai can be happy with just those, or also get the McFarlane to fill out the ranks, or the grey one to customize their own.

And McFarlane now also has 2 different ranks of Marine from the Bandai, and a Sister, and a Necron, there are options for all the kinds of buyers to fill in the ranks.

Why would marvel give figure rights not only to Hasbro and Bandai but ALSO Figma and Revoltech?

To start with, the american and japanese companies really are not competing that much. Different regions, and target demographics take care of that. Second of all, Japanese companies are no where near as anal about making sure they have some kind of exclusivity license, in some cases they do aim for that, but usually they don't care if multiple companies are producing stuff for the same character at the same time.

I handled the Bandai Space Marine today, though granted it was a custom paintjob for my FLGS. It's pretty stellar, wonderful sculptwork and feels solid as a rock in spite of not weighing a tonne. I didn't fiddle too much because the dude had painted it from head to toe and I didn't want to damage it, but man I kinda want one now. I still want a McFarlane one to rebuild into a Noise Marine mind.

In fairness, the bandai one is more posable by a good bit. I've yet to see anyone get the McFarlane marine into a kneeling firing position (I tried with mine, and I don't think he can do it). The ankles on the mcfarlane one are pretty shit too, I can't get his feet to sit flat with his legs much wider than a neutral pose.

Not saying it makes up for the price difference but they definitely aren't equivalent. I love how massive and heavy McFarlane's are, feels like I could kill a man by throwing it.

I think most of that, aside from the head, is mostly the angle of the figures in the picture. I'm pretty sure the bolters, pauldrons and backpacks are all the same size. The backpack sits a little high I believe but other than that I think its just the picture that's making them look different sizes.

If you'll accept some constructive criticism, the intake vents are not so blocky and squared-off, they taper towards the front so they have sort of rounded corners when viewed from above, and similarly, the thrusters have a slightly bowed-outwards "barrel" shape to them, they're not exactly straight-up cylinders. You can see the curve to both of them in this pic.

Great work so far though, you're doing amazing work! Love the new eye on the beaky and the bolt pistol too.

Right pauldron still works just fine. You can see a battleline marking on the Ultramarine's right pauldron, as well as a squad marking within the Chapter insignia. He's got a yellow kneepad with his company marking on his right. The Iron Hand has his company marking on his pauldron, as well as his bolter. His battleline marking is on his left kneepad, with his squad marking on his right. There's a reason that gallery has multiple chapter variants of each pattern, just to showcase how those markings are put on differently. It's your guy, do whatever you think looks cool.

I'm working on wargear next, pistols, rifles, and pretty much anything that looks cool. I am mainly swapping out the handles to one I made that slides in snug.

The jetpack and other stuff will be made available as I tweak them. The original model was from Thingiverse and I made tweaks so it will fit in the backpack slot. If more accurate models are available I can try them.

I modeled the harness so it prints flat and will form with heat to wrap around. Still a WIP.

The Farlane backpack is way wider than the Bandai one.
The Bandai gun is 5 mm shorter and thinner, same with the shoulderpads.

It's PLA which is one kind of 3D printer material that is cheaper but gives rougher prints. It's flexible under heat, I used a hair dryer to shape it. It's ideal for the jetpack since I can print it mostly hollow also. It gets stringy, shows layer lines, but you can make some big cheap prints.

The small weapons and helmets are resin printed so you get that superior quality off the printer and just need a wash and cure. I haven't messed with flexible resin but I usually add 10% Tenacious resin to the colored mix so it *might* survive a drop off a table for things like RPG miniatures.

3D printing is 80% trial and error, you have to learn a bunch about hardware, maintenance, adding supports, exposure times, and whatnot, but the payoff gives you some amazing stuff. More than you ever wanted to know about 3D printing...

But the tossed in Plasma Pistol is by far my favorite thing. I would recommend a trigger guard only so it can fit between the trigger finger and the rest of the hand to give it a better grip.

Most of what I've seen the studding is usually on the left pauldron where the Chapter Insignia normally goes. Did the Imperial Fists normally ever use the Beak helmets? I feel like I've never seen them use them. Always felt more like a Raven Guard or other rabid strike Chapters. Either way I'm looking forward to what you make anon. I'm gonna get around to painting mine as in Imperial Fist as well, not sure if I'm gonna use the standard head from Rob on it or not. The mark VI power armor had beaks as the default, I think. It wasn’t uncommon for any chapter to use them. Nowadays they’re phased out except for Raven Guard hipsters. I’m just ignoring that I’m adding older stuff to a newer armor for the fun of it.

For instance I don't know the pattern of the helmet but I see a lot of Imperial Fists with the helmet the Marine with the Laurels has in pic related has. The one with the imperial laurels looks like a modified MK IV helmet which is quite close to the current gen of MK X armour the Primaris wear.

That image is confusing in general since those look like crusade era MK III armours so the helmet could be entirely made up by the image's creator.

If you want to get a rough approximation, try filling up the grills of your SM figure's helmet and you should get something quite close.

Not necessarily. Thing about GW is that once a faction turns into a supported army, a whole host of colour schemes gets created.

Death Guard and Thousand Sons for instance, have a huge number of colour schemes extending beyond their original chapter.

The Deathwatch arm was just silver. The extra detail is usually just the pauldron and maybe a different elbow pad. I imagine if and when they make a Deathwatch Marine they will probably just make the Pauldron and paint the arm silver.

Just got my Assault Intercessor. I shaved some plastic off the inner ankles. Not much and only from the inside and it allows for a bit more ankle pivot. You can see where it catches when you try to pivot them inwards. The ankles are so restricted due to unecessarrily thick soft plastic but this did help.

mcfarlane actually has these figures to scale with their typical line it looks like. a regular humie would be just below the chest of a primaris, and just below the neck of the old firstborn marines (wish they'd make these)

Bandai’s has a slight advantage in that it can actually line the sight up with the eyepieces on the helmet. I don’t own a McRine yet, but I haven’t seen theirs so that in any of the pictures.

Pretty sure this line is going to end up improperly scaled even with itself anyway. Like, preorders list the upcoming Sister of Battle as a 7" figure too, which would make her way too big. Sisters are canonically average human height, Primaris are 8.5 feet tall. A sister should come up to maybe mid-ab height or so, but I bet you the figure won't.

Glad you like the helmets, a few people in the first wave seem have gotten their deliveries over the weekend, most people are getting them today.

I shipped out early prototype gray bolt pistols or plasma guns to a few of the first people. These had better shaped handles, but they were just undetailed, had no trigger, and were a little too long. I've remodeled the handles since. I'm also going to be printing them in black. So if you missed it the first time you will have another chance soon!

Once I get something people like I can offer the STLs for the helmets. They sit higher than the McFarlane helmet to expose more neck but it could be adjusted.

The feet are on the right side you can see from the photos. Look at every photo posted of these in standing pose most don't have the feet sitting flat when they should be. Its because the soles of the feet catch and wont pivot inwards. Look at every photo posted of these where they aren't using the stand you will see what Im talking about.

I don't think it's been mentioned in this thread, but YOU NEED TO WASH YOUR FIGURES BEFORE PAINTING THEM.

When the toys are manufactured, lube is used throughout their production and some of that lube will still remain on the figure after its packaged.

Use a drop of Dawn soap in a container of warm water and swish the toy around to take off the remaining lube. Rinse it afterward and shake dry.

If oyu leave the lube on, paint won't stick on as good and/or the paint will come off easier.

Blood Angels was my starting chapter, so I feel a lot of nostalgia for them. I kinda feel like they used to look different though? More of a bright tomatoey-red, and lots more use of yellow. This is a bad pic but it was hard for me to even find any pics that illustrated what I was talking about.

I miss that sort of orangey-red hue...I think it came from using "blood red" as opposed to the newer "contrast blood angels red."

I also miss these old hexagonal pots. The newer ones just aren't as nice to me. And design #2 was awful, it seemed to dry out faster than the others so I suspect that lid design leaked air into it. Maybe that's why it didn't seem to stick around for very long.

Finally got mine in the mail today from McFarlane. It's honestly way better than I was expecting, but the only thing I'm not sure about are the ankles. I know others have mentioned they were going to be super limited, and one person even said his were on backwards. But i was looking at them closer, and even tho mine were on correctly, i noticed that the feet themselves curve in the wrong directions, so it makes me wonder if they were labeled incorrectly in the molding process, and that the L should be the right foot and the R should be the left foot

DO NOT USE CONTRAST PAINT. Contrast is made for areas with a lot of detail, like fur or skin or chain mail. If you use it over big smooth areas it gets all splotchy and looks terrible

Question about priming though, with the helmets being black if I was to paint the whole marine they same color would the helmet be a different shade? Can I prime the helmet grey like the rest of the figure?

I'm glad you like it! Before I did these helmets I did a bunch of minis in white, black, and gray primer. I never saw a huge difference unless you were trying to do a color like yellow or white. I would say put gray primer over everything and then you should be good

if you have a dremel and don't mind a little work you could draw some lines on the shins and what have you with a pencil and mark the spots you want them to go and keep them even and what not, then dremel some hole at the proper depth and then glue them in. But that's a lot of work and not really needed as your work shows.

Those half pearls come in all sizes. I went with 5mm, 4mm and 3mm. You’d probably want a 7mm or an 8mm half pearl for the shoulders and legs and maybe 4mm for the head and crotch.

Been making some heads like Toymarinemaker..A mix of the newer stlyle helmets and older ones..Also a black templars grimaldus primaris head.Still got to get the sizes right,they are a bit too large..

Just pulled my very first prints off of my new (used) Elegoo Mars!
I used the Elegoo water-washable resin, and tried curing twice (total of 8minutes) at a couple of angles to get it all. Hopefully these don’t separate in the morning. Not sure what the white stuff is....

Good job! So there are some tricks to 3D printing and we are all learning. A couple of humble suggestions: 1) Print the helmets angled about 35 degrees so the chin is higher than the back of the helmet. This will then let you place supports underneath the 'rim' versus on the flat bottom. 2) People online warn about overcuring, I usually do about 15 minutes per side. 3) The white stuff is because it's wet when you cure it. Let it completely dry, maybe get a small fan to blow on them for like 15-20 minutes first.
