It contrasts with how you get instantly DMCAd if you try and make your own mario game or something where as these bootlegs could actually reduce sales.

The answer is probably that this isn't just a toy thing and that China is a scary country and no one actually wants to be the one who does anything about them.

I have both bootleg and legit SHF Michael Jackson.
Apart from obvious things like face and miscolored joints, bootleg has rigid jacket instead of flexible one and terrible creaking joints that are hard to move.

It's illegal to ship bootlegs in the US. Toys usually make it in fine but it's a pretty big issue in the clothing rep community. People will make big $1000 haul purchases and have the whole thing confiscated by customs. The person who ordered isn't gwnerally arrested or fined anything but you don't get a refund or ever see your goods.

There's this Figma Anatomy figure I wanted, the problem is it costs 100$+. So I see it on eBay for 6$, obviously a Bootleg, but for that price even if it's a POS it's so cheap so what could go wrong?

Flash Forward a week or two, I got this POS on the mail. It looks like a bad print from a cheap 3D printer (Not even molded), looks a bit greasy like it didn't cure well, it came apart easily, nothing fit anywhere...omg

Long story short, I paid 6$ and I feel ripped off lol. You get (not what you pay for) less than what you pay for. So be careful.

The4 only bootlegs I have bought were more like a third-party figure. I bought the 'bootleg' 1000Toys Robox, called the E-Box, by MFT (Mech-Fan Toys). MFT are well-known for their high-quality third-party transformers and Diaclone...uh...clones.
The E-Box had their own backstory, came with a unique poster and came in 4 more colours than the Robox. The plastic is very slightly different and there's no wash - but they are functionally identical. I would absolutely recommend them and only have one Robox and four E-Boxes.I bought them because they were literally half the price of the obox and I wasn't prepared to pay full-price for one. Got my actual Robox from Mandarake for a low price.

In order to sue you need governmental cooperation in the country the perpetratpr resides and in a lot of cases you won't get it.

There are full on branded Apple stores and Nike Stores in major cities that are completely unlicensed and sell knockoffs.

China even have their own version of YouTube that contains a lot of content taken from the orginal and the owners find it near impossible to get any of it taken down.

They are their own world protected by their own government. Can't knock the hustle.

I am tempted to get those just for the bodies to swap heads, but I can't bring myself to support the bootleg market. At least I can't bring myself to buy stuff that's passed off as Mafex or official brands. Maybe if I found some generic figures that don't pretend to be Mafex and flood the market with fakes.

Its mostly not worth it. China isn't going to prosecute copywrite laws on Chinese companies. And for the most part they aren't really eating into their profits. The out of scale figma clone selling on Aliexpress for 1/5 the cost is really only being bought by people too poor to ever get the real deal.

Also most of these bootleg sales aren't on legitimate websites like Amazon. They are on Chinese sites, where we run into the first problem. The only time I can remember the Chinese actually shutting down a bootleg operation was Dragon Momoko or something. And that is because their Gundam bootlegs were getting close to legit in quality. Their molds were suspiciously similar to Bandai's own, and there were kits that Bandai had not released yet. However, it might also have been shutdown because it was in Hong Kong. But I am not 100% on that. It might have also been shut down because Bandai was putting more pressure on China, as China and Hong Kong have official Bandai expos.

They shutdown Dragon Momoko first because they fucked up and used the trademarked "Exia" name on one of their MB-likes original designs, NOT their bootlegs. When this happens, they can easily get the trademark owner (I.e Sunrise) to build a case. For actual bootlegs like Daban's, it took longer and pulling more strings because these bootleggers know how to avoid the trademarks.

I’ve bought bootlegs on eBay and they were dirt cheap. They were trash ... but cheap trash. So that’s fun!

I dunno what exact bootlegs you're looking for and what country you're from, but mafex bootlegs tend to be 10~20 usd, versul legit ones being 40~120.
Hasbro toys are usually not bootlegs, but leftovers, so they usually cost the same as the legit ones, and if it's something with extra accessories/heads, of course it will cost more than 20 usd.

This, except there is no coincidence. I actually think the 2 can co-exist with each-other, since the aren't making direct bootlegs or in-stock products and a lot of restock accessories drives consumer to buy multiples of the official product for display purposes which actually boosts bandai's sales.
