I just got my X-plus Godzilla 2019, and immediately sold my SH Monsterarts G2019. I don't need articulation anymore, and I cant stand the big fucking gaps at the hips and the turtleneck shit. I dont play with toys anymore, I just want something that looks fucking awesome, and the X-plus Godzilla does that way better than the SHM Godzilla for me.

I bordelined this decision a couple times, but I also enjoy gaps and visible joints as I appreciate the engineering that goes into hiding them and making them aesthetically pleasing.

Might make it my first non-neca purchase. I was starting to collect NECA figures but these, XPLUS and Bandai's Monsterarts seem to be worth more my money since I love the big lizard so much.
Do any of you have Art Spirits stuff? I just saw their King Ghidorah and that just might be my first big Kaiju purchase cause damn it's awesome and huge. Plus I missed out on the monster arts one. I hesitated on it.

IMO the SHMA are only fun if you pose them to recreate battles and stuff. I wish I had more space, because X-Plus is more of my cup of tea. I like having stuff that looks like it jumped right out of the movie. And then there are some monsters like Hedorah that we know will never get an SHMA or any other articulated figure. X-Plus just has more variety.

It is tough to make a monster into an action figure. Female figures that have a lot of skin exposed face the same challenge, how to hid the joints as much as possible.

The SH Monsterarts are amazing toys, the sculpting and paint apps are usually great, and they probably make them as best as they can in terms of having articulation joints and hiding them as best as they can.

I think X-plus and SH Monsterarts/Bandai both do great jobs with Godzilla and kaiju in general. I think it all boils down to the tastes of the collector, but you can't go wrong with either. I appreciate both because as a older kaiju fan, 20 years ago there were no kaiju collectibles of todays quality level. There was Bandai import figures but the quality was pretty basic, no where near X-plus or SHM.

What keeps me from the X-plus pill is that some of the poses just look awkward. I get they're all taken straight from the movies but that doesn't mean it works for a figure thats always going to be in that pose.

Yeah, some of them are like a middle ground between static and dynamic, so it comes off as awkward. I have to warn you though, the X-Plus game can be a slippery slope. Man, I got Orga this year and it is amazing (as an Orga fan). It made me wonder why I didn't get an X-Plus sooner. If it wasn't for money and space I wonder probably be searching for more. I am turned off by most for their size, pose, and price fortunately so my wallet is safe (for now).

That's kinda a lot to say given most toy companies that deal with Godzilla like to reveal unannounced products. Big emphasis on classic Toho monsters including ones that aren't mainstream here in the states. I'll take a Varan and baragon thank you. Also new sculpts moving forward instead of kitbashing the Bandai stuff, going vynl instead of hard plastic. Color me optimistic.

Well let's see...Playmates Star Trek reboot toys sucked hard, Playmates Terminator toys sucked hard, Playmates took the awesome 2012 line and began leeching money from it so the toys began to get worse and worse by the end AND cancelled tons of figures, Rise of TMNT sucked hard, Playmates' Godzilla toys are total trash...

The evidence is clogging pegs at Walmart. Playmates doesn't get better. It gets lazier.

You can't do better than SHMA you stupid cuck. Godzilla was not meant to have great articulation. Just enough for it to move like a dude in a bulky suit. Their sculpts are pretty near perfect without getting into statues.

I feel like both the Neca and the SHMA figures missed the mark on the '54 head. The film is like an in between of both figures. I think if the SH had the Neca eyes or just a bit bigger ones it would literally be perfect.
Is there a statue by anyone that's pretty close to matching it?

That's not the suit though, that's a puppet, the SHMA is very accurate to the suit, the Neca is not accurate to neither suit nor puppet/maquette etc etc.

The puppet had bigger eyes like the Neca figure. They were pretty accurate in that regard at least.

That's the new suit for the short film, that wasn't part of the original movie.

Also, the Neca was aiming for the suit, not the puppet, the puppet has a completely different head sculpt and shape, the Neca having bigger eyes is just another one of its inaccuracies.

They did, I can't understand why people give it a pass, if you hold a side by side the Neca looks nothing like any of the shots/posters, I mean, it's acceptable for when it came out, but I would've expected a 2.0 instead of a re-release. Incidentally, SHMA's re-release is perfect and it fixed all of the issues my first release had.

Right one doesn't look like 54 at all, it kinda looks like the Neca, rounded the top too much and added too much to the upper part of the snout. SHMA is still better, the only flaw of the sculpt is the awkward placement of the lower jaw, and that the pupils are too big and the eyes too glassy, which was fixed in the re-release.

The one on the far right, I assume it's the finished one from the middle, looks off with the added padding in the back of the head. I think I still prefer how the SHMA turned out. I've got it posed in a way where it doesn't look awkward in the back of the head. I think what you're describing as wildy inaccurate is due to articulation engineering and cuts in the sculpt that make it look awkward in some poses.

Nah, the sculpt is definitely off. It was already apparent from the promo pictures and it almost turned me off the entire thing. It's something that's bothered for years. The resculpt I posted isn't perfect, but it is an impovement over the original.

You can see from this side profile shot just how stupidly flat the head is.

I don't see it, but do what makes you happy, definitely leagues above the Neca in any case. I personally repainted the brow on one of mines slightly lighter cause it looks like that in some shots, so modify away.

Mondo just released an 8" blue and gold Pulgasari figure, but they only made 100 of them. I know they'll release the same thing in different colors, but I hate how they always make everything so limited. They have some Hedorah sofubis coming out that look cute.

I know a majority of their stuff is taken from Bandai and NECA stuff, but their articulated Kong had to be original, right? Or was that taken from the Lenard figure? Besides the communication issues, Its probably better that the Godzilla suit wasn't too unruly tall for them. Partially because the communication issue, but also because they have to work with the suit(so you'd need a crew of tall people or a lot of step stools on hand) and would have to scale the buildings larger to scale with the larger costumes(with the limited studio space you have.)

Also as for the Heisei era Koichi Kawakita was allegedly having drinking problems towards the end and urban legend is part of the reason behind the size boost in vs. King Ghidorah was to let him use less detailed miniatures(since they'd be smaller relative to Godzilla, and thus didn't need the same detail as before) so having to detail it for an actor a foot larger would've been hell for him.

Just got my 95 SHMA. The eyes were my biggest concern, and they could be worse, which is kinds sad actually, but I'm happy with it overall. It's really nice to get a figure with some decent accessories, too. If the eyes were just a bit closer to facing the same direction, he would probably be my favorite, but that still goes to 02 for right now.

While I do love the figures, I completely agree. $75-85 should be the price of an SHMA that includes extra hands, beam effects, and maybe even a tiny building or tank. Sadly, that's the bare minimum price of entry these days. The QC is also an issue, no doubt. Luckily, BlueFin is sending me a replacement for no additional cost for Burning '19.

Which is weird, because Tamashii has almost immaculate QC on their other lines, like Dragon Ball and Marvel, I don't think I've received a single bad Dragon Ball figure, but with Godzilla, I have to order multiples just to be sure I get one without QC issues, which I have to admit I've been lucky, no QC issues with most of my figures except with Shin, lots of paint issues with those and I had to run throught multiples of each release to get a good one, that I ended up selling anyway after I got the X Plus

I think it must be an automated process, and since the eyes are in opposite sides of the head, there must be a greater marging for error for the machines that do that, because it looks like the eyes are painted on, instead of decals like their DB figures or matrix printing like their movie figures.

But I don't see any other brand other than Xplus doing a much better job than SHMA, and even Xplus sometimes has less than perfect eyes for the trickier designs.

Not true. There is quite a few Godzilla, Ultraman, and other monster stuff coming out and recently released. Just to name a few:

>Movie Monsters teasing new releases, including Singular Point toys

And that's just Godzilla. There's also Ultraman with their new monster toys, and NECA's King Kong. Again, Ray Harryhousen merchandise coming. I think NECA teased possibly getting Harryhousen stuff, although that could have been just a rumor.
We can even talk about older toys too. My favorites are the keshigomu lines.
The genre is far from dead. New Ultraman movie coming out. Godzilla Singular Point coming out soon, Godzilla vs King Kong eventually coming out, a new Japan Godzilla movie eventually coming, etc. Also can rewatch older movies, which is jam packed- what are we at, 35 Godzilla movies now? We don't have to talk about new stuff.

I don't know personally, I just saw their Pulgasari that looks amazing, and people who bought it seem to like it a lot, but I'm not a fan of that IP, so of all of the stuff Mondo does, Sofubi might be the one thing they're actually good at.

I wish, but SHMA has not announced any upcoming figures besides a 1989 Goji. Bandai USA/Playmates sold a 1968 Goji at Wal-Mart, but I'm not sure if you'll still be able to find it. It's, of course, not able to do the flight pose anyway.

WB have said they plan on releasing it theatrically, it wouldn't surprise me if they're waiting to see how things shape up in the new year to see if they should do a WW84 deal. They just turned down 200M from netflix, they're not just going to dump it on their own streaming service, they'll have another way to make some of its money back, ie theatrical and streaming simultaneously
