Found a She-Ra castle today at an antique store for $29. I honestly had no idea this even existed. Missing all the internals except the platforms, but this is still really cool. Hope I can find the windows and door on eBay eventually.

This is a good playset to have. I'm doubtful we get it in Origins despite that it's shown in the artwork on the Power-Con She-Ra's box art, not unless it's an exclusive or something. I just can't picture it being on store shelves, but an Amazon exclusive playset that's $80 like Castle Grayskull... I could see that.

This layout almost would have been better for Greykull's play features.

There's a few really cool playsets. One of the better obscure one is Nordor, Skeletor's lair from New Adventures of He-Man. It's a moon with a skull face on it, and guns that stick out, which folds open to become a base.

This was actually used for an ad to retailers as a stand-in for Origins Moss Man. That said, the silhouette matches Masterverse/Revelations Moss Man, but it is very clearly a mockup on a Classics body, with articulation being blocked and all that. Basically, just picture it as a mockup for what Revelations Moss Man will look like, not as any potential item to be released.

The initial figures were thin looking while later ones are bulkier. There's even a He-Man that looks more in line with the vintage MOTU in style, called Thunderpunch He-Man. The mistake with the line was making the figures not bulky like the vintage figures had been, so they didn't look like they belonged together, since New Adventures was it's own new thing. All the figures should have been like the Thunderpunch He-Man from the start.

MOTU has a cool Hero/Villain nemesis pattern going on

He-Man vs Skeletor
Jitsu vs Fisto
Stinkor vs Moss Man

There’s not a huge lineup though. Who do you have right against one another as arch nemeses? I tend to do Clamp Champ vs Ninjor since they both appeared in the same comic together, plus a sneaky ninja vs an expert at capture is a fun dynamic.

Beast Man vs Man-at-Arms and Teela vs Evil-Lyn but those matchups don’t really feel natural, just the roles as seconds in command and “the girl” lol. 200X had a Trap Jaw and Stratos thing going on. What do you guys do?

I wish I knew how it looked with them. I'm thinking about picking up Nordor myself. My only concern is if Skeletor can fit in the throne. I think he can, just because some of the figures were more in scale with the vintage MOTU. NA figures were roughly the same height of vintage MOTU, they were just for the most part slimmer.

I think the thin figures was the biggest mistake in NA which I think held back the line. The only other issue with it is that they never made the two main female characters: Crita and Mara, which is like featuring Teela and Evil-Lyn, but never making them.

Aside from that NA is a cool line. It has a number of good looking villains, and the vehicles are nice and combine with one another, and there's multiple playsets. The cartoon is also really good: high action and more serious, something that the Filmation series wasn't really allowed to be, but at the time that NA came out, cartoons were just getting more and more action packed, and so did He-Man. It also had Gary Chalk playing He-Man, and Chalk later played Man-At-Arms in 200X and is best known for playing Optimus Primal in Beast Wars.

My headcanon is that Oo-Larr was the original He-Man and the old king introduced in the Series 2 mini-comics was Miro, who had an off-screen adult son. Prince Adam then grew up admiring He-Man, who died or disappeared without the Power Sword, which the Sorceress passed to Adam.
None of that Classics stuff about other He-Men before Oo-Larr though.

I think they imply Skeletor's defeat in the first episode? But beyond that we never get so much as a hint or idea what happened to anyone else. Skeletor just becomes Darth Vader and teams up with a couple of aliens as He-man takes to the stars and joins what are essentially pulp sci-fi/fantasy versions of the New Gods.

but they already tried a line of dolls that bombed and I'm not sure how a hard plastic line would fare. i guess we'll see with the super 7 line. but I'm pretty sure it's not going to be very popular and honestly a low number volume from super 7 is probably the best bet for the line as opposed to a full B&M production run.

but let's be real here, 15 million, 150 million, this line will never move anything close to either of those numbers .... not 150k or even 15k.

Vintage fantasy art is my absolute favorite style of art. It's one of the reasons MOTU is one of my fave franchises. I love the Frazetta-esque illustrations, although I actually enjoy them a bit more than Frazetta's work because of the colors. Easy race swap to appeal to demographics. Notice it was done with a more obscure character like Zodac that nobody would bitch about and who had worn a helmet. They also changed his name to Zodak with a "k" and said he's a different character from the original Zodac, so the original still existed. It was a smart move if you have some kind of diversity quota, tho I don't know why they wouldn't have just introduced Clamp Champ rather than go thru that level of work? The Justice League cartoon also had a mandated level of diversity according to Bruce Tim, who had wanted Hal Jordan on the team, but was told he could have a team of all white people, so he elected to put John Stewart on the team instead.

Many of the Origins figures look better than their prototypes and promotional photos. The new Mer-Man looks much better in the in hand images that I've seen, than I the promotional images, and Trap-Jaw looked pretty bland to me when his prototype was first revealed, but I really like him as a figure now. Scare Glow also kinda looked bland to me in his solid white prototype, but looks great with the semi-translucent glow in the dark plastic of the final figure. It also helps seeing the figures all grouped together and gives you a better feel for the line.

I made it, in my head, that Hordak tried to steal away both kids but something went wrong and He-Mam ended up being raised by a barbarian tribe far from the more civilized areas of Eternia, only becoming aware of being Prince Adam after Man at Arms seeks answers about the missing royal children at Greyskull on behalf of Randor. In a way Prince Adam is a disguise as the young warrior and protector of Castle Greyskull raised in the wilds tries to be more like his newly discovered civilized parents.

If this isn't the reason the 2002 series failed then I don't know what it is. I don't buy it that the show had low ratings, the cancelation was purely based on toy sales. And the 200x toys were solid tho.

I think the show had a really slow start with typical action cartoon plots before it got to the meat. People cite CN was bad about airing it, but they were given a pretty damned good platform at the beginning with Toonami's daytime schedule. Plus I just think MOTU didn't have enough room with 2000s kids' other interests. I was reading the art book, and they mentioned toy variants of He-man were increasingly given armor, because focus groups didn't like how "nekkid" He-man was.

A lot of weird factors, and no clear specific one.

1- At the end of the line, the toys were still selling; perhaps not as hard as they were initially, but it's generally regarded as there being not enough villains on the pegs, and too many He-Man and Skeletor figures. However, the line was still selling, but Mattel has and had a policy that they'd cancel a toyline even if it was successful still in a lot of markets. Members of 4H have stated that Mattel's Max Steel line for example was cancelled despite that it was still hot in a lot of regions outside the US, particularly South America and made a ton of money-- but Mattel wanted toys they could sell everywhere, primarily the US and wasn't happy with just a lot of money, but a wanted a fuckton of money, and would rather cancel and replace a line to try again if that should happen.

2- The show was cancelled and there was no media presence left-- this theory has gained a lot more traction in recent years. Stores want and demand a reason to carry a toyline, and no show in the pipeline would be a huge detriment. Famously in the Toys That Made Us documentary, when MOTU was first shown to retailers, Child World asked how kids would know about the line, and Mattel said they'd pack in mini-comics. Then when shown to Toys R Us, TRU said kids don't really read a lot, so Mattel said there'd be a cartoon tie-in. Mattel has since then refused to put MOTU on pegs unless there was some sort of media tie-in, and repeated as such numerous times during Classics. It can be argued on how and why the show failed, but much like the toys, by all reports the show WAS popular.

CN is the main factor for why 200X's cartoon failed-- they notably were doing similar shit to the Justice League cartoon, and wanted to cancel Justice League, which was why it was rebranded as Justice League Unlimited. Bruce Timm said that CN didn't like to keep certain shows running past a certain number of episodes and to get around that they had to re-launch the show as if it were something new. Prior to this Justice League was getting moved around and it was sometimes hard to find, and back then if you missed an episode you might not see it. And CN stopped playing re-runs of it. They did the same bullshit to 200X. CN didn't like airing action cartoons-- they cost more money and they appeal to a smaller demographic, and therefore are less marketable for them. They would rather make nice cheap Calarts cartoons that appeal to nobody, because it's the trend of the moment and because they had success with Adventure Time for two to five seasons and then refused to just cancel it.

CN also allegedly sabotaged the Thundercats reboot negotiating a deal with Lego to steal the concept for Legends of Chima from Thundercats, since Lego was already doing Ninjago for them, and CN preferred that versus an action cartoon like Thundercats. The information on this comes from crew from the show, who said they were trying to get Lego to make toys for the cartoon and sent designs to them that ended up in Legends of Chima.
