I heard the Masters of the Universe Kevin Smith show is a sequel to the Filmation one, does this mean that I need to watch Filmation first to understand it or it works if I didn't watch it? I aslo heard that we get 2 shows, is that true? I was kind of out of loop until this week.

It's a much better series for sure-- better written, better animated, better acted, heavy action, a bigger budget, and it's an anime. The show even has an actual ending, it wasn't just suddenly cancelled, they ordered over 60 episodes to be made and made the entire show in one go. People talk about NA like it was a failure, just because it never attained the same popularity of the original, but it did alright.

The only criticism I can make is that I think Mattel couldn't use a lot of the Filmation designs or characters, so when characters such as Queen Marlena or the Sorceress show up, they're new designs. Also the figures when first introduced were thin and lanky, and only got bulked up at the end of the line to be more in line with the original toys.

I think he originally worked at a comic shop, then got into making videos, collecting revenue from youtube and patreon, and now because he's so popular toy companies just give him toys for free in hopes of a good review since, Pixel Dan rarely reviews anything he doesn't like, and in the instances where he doesn't he usually just says it isn't for him. So companies give him free things and even make toys just for him.

I don't think you really need to have watched the original, since the original wasn't often continuity heavy. You can more or less say the new mini-series is set in an established continuity. The original series itself isn't very new fan friendly, sort of like how Quentin Tarantino said normies and casuals wouldn't get or understand the movie Evil Dead and would just write off it's effects as cheap and laughable. It's the same thing, casuals aren't gonna like it or understand it, since it was made for a much younger audience at a time when cartoons had very little action. You have to really commit to the original and kinda go into it understanding these things, since it's often deliberately campy.

And yes, there's going to be a second series, which is a reboot using CG animation, which is geared toward kids.

Depends on the canon, he comes from another dimension. However in Classics he's a ghost of a thief who wanted to break into Castle Grayskull, and as a curse he has the key to opening Castle Grayskull chained to his arm. I prefer that he's a supernatural monster from another dimension to be honest and was always a glow in the dark skeleton man, in the same way that in Skeletor's original origin he's a skeleton man from another dimension where everyone's a skeleton man.

No. You had to make him by buying the Snake Armor version in order to get his head and then you had to buy King Grayskull, for his chest armor. And if you wanted 200X Battlecat you had to buy both Battlecat and Battle Lion, and then swap Battle Lion's armor onto Battlecat. There was also a head pack that just contained heads based on 200X sculpts to swap onto the existing figures.

There are two different versions of Trap-Jaw as most know. Here's an example of both versions. The difference is one's arm only swivels up and down at the shoulder, while one has an extra hinge so it has the same movement as his normal arm.

The one on the left side of the photo has a gap at the shoulder joint, this is how you can tell which version you've got in package. You can only see this if you're getting them in person, when you order them online it's completely at random which you get. The one on the right has no gap in his shoulder.

According to Mark Taylor the original reason for Teela's snake armor was that she wore it as a disguise to pretend to be an entirely new character as part of Skeletor's Evil Warriors, and would work as a villain for him, but really she was a double agent helping He-Man. Taylor said that the mini-comic guys couldn't grasp this concept and they tried to treat it as that her figure could be used as two different-- Teela and the Sorceress, who was sometimes refereed to as the Goddess. So with this concept it was two different characters using the same figure; she was Teela without the armor on, and Sorceress with it on.

So I have 4 Trap-Jaws, and it's obviously better to have the hinge shoulder. The two on the left seem to be the hinge, but the two on the right technically also have a gap, though it isn't as prominent as the other two. But the post states that the no hinge has no gap. I'm 90% sure all four of those have the extra articulation. The swivel one sits recessed into the torso a bit and is flush with the figure's torso. The Trap-Jaw that I have turned out to be the swivel one and his sits into his torso joint and sockets inside of it if that description makes any sense. The fact that there's any gap at all proves those are the hinged shoulder, not the swivel.

Alright I went further. I took a picture of my Trap-Jaw's arm. There's like a lip that comes out on the joint so it sockets into the torso's joint. This "lip" isn't on the hinged one, because it would get in the way and prevent the movement, hence the gap in the shoulder, and why the swivel one would sit flush with the torso. I'm very sure that all 4 of those are the hinge joint, because it's missing this "lip" which I circled.

Still very much a work in progress, but I’m happier with it. Going to make some corner shelves to the left of she-ra’s castle and replace it with castle greyskull when origin releases there’s. MOTU is the most fun I’ve ever had collecting toys. Strongly considering purging other stuff to focus on it.

Mark Taylor, who's primarily He-Man's creator essentially went on to create much of what we know of as TMNT today after leaving Mattel to go work at Playmates. He worked with Errol McCarthy to create the TMNT toys for Playmates back in the 80's do to both Taylor and McCarthy working on He-Man. McCarthy was the cardback artist for MOTU, and under Mark's direction McCarthy and Taylor designed and created a number of TMNT characters with Playmates. Playmates also commissioned a cartoon tie-in, and therefore Playmates and Mark Taylor and Errol McCarthy should probably get a creator credit for TMNT even though they didn't create the actual comic.

Included here is Mark Taylor's art for Splinter.

Mark Taylor was very upset by how Filmation treated Battlecat and viewed him as a serious creature and didn't like that he was a cowardly tiger named Cringer who transforms into Battlecat. In early concepts, everyone road a Battlecat like a horse.

Mini comics He-Man and Filmation He-Man are already 2 separate continuities (at least in how we understand or treat continuity nowadays). So both versions exist concurrently, no problems there.

Right, but even in the recent comic (wasn't it called Masters of the Multiverse?) where all the universes crossed over, that original Mini Comics world was one of them. I think if Mattel laid out all the different MotU continuities, it would be one standing on its own, separate from the later ones that tied more closely to the cartoon. A lot of the themes and stories were quite different, after all. He-Man being his own character not tied to anyone else (Adam), as a big one.

Also prior to this there was two different continuities. The first one has He-Man as a savage just wandering around and giving a high-tech harness to wear that gives him super strength or shields him depending on which harness he has on. He also doesn't use his sword, he uses his axe and the Power Sword is just something that He-Man and Skeletor sometimes fight over. Then the continuities change and He-Man starts using the sword and the stuff about the harnesses starts getting ignored and the world of Eternia starts taking more shape.

With Dragon's Gift we're introduced to things such as Prince Adam, although he doesn't look like his final version, he wears a blue vest at this time, but gradually as the comics progress the characters start to resemble more and more their looks in Filmation.

Most of the early mini-comics are so ill-defined I'd describe it. I think they wanted to move He-Man as far away from Conan as possible, and therefore Mattel didn't want him to be a savage-- whatever they could do to change it. Mark Taylor said they deliberate did that so it wouldn't resemble Conan too much. I think this was because of legal reasons. Taylor seems convinced that they changed the name from Lords of Power to MOTU so as to further distance itself from Conan.

Kevin Smith did say he saw a Revelations Battle Cat toy. No indication if this was in Masterverse, but he did mention 10 toys for the show (2 more than the aforementioned 8 from Masterverse), and that the "Cringer" face under the Battle Cat mask looked just like the show's version. Also mentioned articulation, so it feels like he was talking about Masterverse.

Stone Cold's snake arm accessories don't fit very well, even after I trimmed the clips down on them. It's almost like they're meant to go on the wrist pegs instead of either the hands or wrists. Hogan's armor is just way too big and loose. Otherwise, they're just the same figures we've gotten a dozen times over now, so they're great fun to fiddle around with.

I got the ring mostly for Hogan but his face looks kinda doughy like he's Bulk Bogan instead or something. Qc could have been better but I still like the set even though I already have the gray skull ring.

I wouldn't call the original mini-comic continuity "ill-defined". It did have a basic premise, at least for the first two waves before the Filmation created concepts like Orko, and Prince Adam/Cringer and Sorceress started showing up along with characters like Evilyn, Roboto, Moss Man, etc that were created explicitly with the Filmation canon in mind.

The problem is a lot of this had to form over time while the comics kept contradicting itself. Also by the time Zodac being a neutral cosmic watcher made it to the minicomics, concepts like the split power sword was already gone.

I think we're getting single carded Mankind and Kane in upcoming waves but if they went with Mankind's first gear for the carded version it'd work out really well.

MOTWWEU really lends itself to variants. I missed out on that first Skull King Triple H but if they just did a simple repaint with black tights I'd actually prefer to get that one. They could redo Ultimate Warrior loads of different ways with the way he did his facepaint.

Considering dumping all of my GI joes (I only have wave 1/2 of the retro collection including the vehicles and another thrift store vehicle find) and putting that money into MOTU vintage/classics. Vintage and Classics can be huge money pits depending on what you collect, but is worth a try since in my opinion MOTU collections are more fun to look at on a shelf when you're surveying your room. Origins is also less of a headache than getting in on current GI Joe toys right now.

I really want to like this line, but I just can't get into it. Classics was the right balance of aesthetics from the various spurce materials for me, but I feel like this line is like one tick too far to original toy line for me.
