Unorthodox scales are shit. Say what you want about the pedantic fucks who refuse to buy anything outside of their scale, but it's pretty much been proven that weird scales don't do as well. The proof is in the money (or lack thereof).

As for 1/18, similar situation: it just doesn't sell as well, and if the hearsay is to be believed, the profit margins are much thinner because the manufacturing expenses (cutting molds, etc) are not significantly less than a 1/12 figure.

1/18 is more "fun" because you get more vehicles, diorama pieces and large characters alongside the standard-sized characters but 1/12 is better for sculpt detail and articulation engineering due to the larger size. That's why most collector-focused lines tend to be 1/12 or bigger.

On that note, I kind of feel like play patterns have changed. As an earlier poster noted, a large portion of the toy-buying market is now adult collectors, and the vast majority of them do not "play" in a traditional sense. They line up their figures on shelves or in Detolfs to be admired from afar, and larger figures are ideal for this. Vehicles, dioramas, etc. typically aren't easy to fit into "classy" displays like this, and not a lot of adult collectors are actually doing the whole "pew pew you're dead" kind play.

I liked 1/12 for years, and it excels in the field of selling popular individual characters. Most people just want a toy of the protagonist of the series they like. They don't want the entire gang and the bus they ride on. 1/18 is just too small to sell as a perfect, one purchase representation of a character. I think it's largely just deep pocketed normalfags who really go for most 1/12 these days, people who are willing to spend a very large amount on a very fancy figure of the protagonist of a very popular work, but still just only want a desk toy and not models, dolls or vehicles.

However 1/12 has been shooting through the fucking roof in costs. Every brand is coming out with some part cloth $150+ premium figure line and I think a lot of them are going to bomb, with maybe a handful with staying power. My personal issue is that this is getting dangerously close to competing with 1/6 scale toys which has been conversely getting cheaper and with a larger variety of smaller brands and respectable 3rd party work, stuff like hot toys aside.

Yep I moved out of 1/12 collecting a year ago. I was building up my collection when I realised "shit, I can get one of x, or 5 of y for the same price. Or I can save up and get something big."
Its always a compromise between collecting one thing religiously and missing out on other good stuff. In the end, 1/12 wasn't worth it to me.

I collect all kinds of stuff now from chogokin mecha to dinoshit. And I sometimes get a 1/12 character or design that I really like.

If I had enough money and space I would collect 1/12 AND 1/18. I love the Joy Toy, Acid Rain and Planet Green Valley figures, vehicles and mechs. But I had to choose and 1/12 just makes better characters and has far better articulation for my tastes. I do wish we had a decent amount of affordable vehicles and mechs for 1/12 though.

It's easy to collect/buy/store a lot and easy and cheaper to produce (just big enough for details to be easy to apply) and ship. Like it or not, 1/12 is objectively the best scale for humans from both pov, collectors and makers.
