there's got to be a comprehensive youtube series that teaches you how to build lego building MOCs, right? not "how to build this specific model" or "how to build this specific technique" but something very abstract and general that just talks about the fundamentals and insights of building

While I'm here, I figured I'd ask if anyone's Lego S@H order stuck on "in process" - I ordered a few sets in 4 separate orders to stack the GWPs, and my first and final orders are both "in warehouse" while the 2nd and 3rd are stuck on "in process" - everything went through, as I got the funds authorized, but I have yet to receive the confirmation emails for the 2 "in process" orders.

while it's true that any set could be approved and sold and would make money (naturally, since they exist to be approved/rejected in the first place because they trended on the internet) there's definitely a concern in business of cannibalizing your sales by releasing too many products in too short a time span

Normally yes. The secret to IDEAS sets is that normies don't care about Lego and only buy Big Bang Theory or Friends. They do not have a Lego budget or interest in any of the other sets and account for a sizable portion of those sets sold.

All of the appeal of the original is gone. The original had the 'old' asthetic, like it was made centuries ago.

This one here looks like it is brand new and just opened up for business. It's a completely different vibe. As such everything they did to 'age' it feels wrong, such as the 'moss' effect on the roof or the random broken tiles or different colored bricks to represent weathering.

Working on collecting all (official) colours of the Classic Space minifigs
Light bluish grey doesn't count since you have to cannibalize a bunch of minifigs to get the parts for it

Started working on the Rubicon tonight. I'm normally a city builder but did technic sets back during the supercar days. Man they've gotten complex with parts. A fun build regardless.

I would love it if the 3 in 1 creator series also had castle buildings once a year. Since they've started doing their mini modulars, my lego city has exploded. 40$ a building is a steal compared to 150$ ish. and I think the smaller scale makes them more cozy.

What I did and it worked for me, log off of your lego.com account add the items to your cart as a guest, the car should show up, log on to your account and the car will still be in your cart and you can check out with it.

Yeah, the pink frogs are an odd choice.

I use unbroken sprues of pink flower petals for mine. Seems to work pretty well and the sprues are cheap.

I have too many road plates already to bother with this. You'll have to make your own curves and I'm not about to order a shitload of tiles just for one. They seem overpriced not because of price:part ratio but you'll have to make your own sidewalks too. These roads are getting crammed into city sets which seem to inflate the price beyond their value. Not a fan of these roads at all.

If you go to color guide, you can see the greatest number of parts in each color. I won't say the larger number is ALWAYS the cheapest, because I haven't tested this. But it is a safe bet to go from there. Or at least that is something to go by. If you are looking for a more narrow answer. Start with more basic colors you would find on lego's part boxes and work form there. Or light blueish grey. There is no shortage of light bluish grey. Its just kinda boring looking unless you are going for a certain aesthetic.

Greetings LG!
New year, new project. Originally I was going to begin a series of IP 2002 builds and MOCs to share with you guys but since it hasn't snowed yet I've decided to go a different route.
Today we travel back to 1994 and take a look at Spyrius!
This is a space faction I haven't really finished collecting but I do have most of their sets. It's also a faction that I "grew up" with since I received the smallest set from this faction in 1994.
So with all that intro out of the way let's have a look at the Saucer Centurion.
This is their largest ship and quite an interesting one. Not only is it pretty interestingly shaped (we won't see this sort of shape until the later alien themes of the 90s) but I really enjoy the dual canopy concept.
The set comes with two crewmembers: one human astronaut and one droid. The faction overall makes a lot of use of droids/robots and I really think that's a unique and interesting aspect of Spyrius.

Apart from the unique looks the set comes with a few features:
1. A grabber arm that extends outward allowing the crew to grab things.
2. The most interesting feature is the rover one. The ship itself is able to split, and when it does, the two halves it's made of move apart a little making enough room for the rover to be able to detach from the rest of the ship and fall out the bottom.
I can see how this could be an absolute joy for some young kid to play with, since it is really loaded with play features.
Overall I'd say it's one of their strongest sets and definitely something you should get if you can. The one thing I dislike is the underside of the ship which is very incomplete looking (parts budget I suppose) and could definitely use an improvement.
I'll keep this one as is and buy another down the line to mod and upgrade.

The Surveillance Scooter - Spyrius' smallest set.
This is not really a big deal of a set, just a plate with some slope parts and an astronaut stuck on top. Still, it was one of my first sets and one I have very fond memories of.
Finding this under the Christmas tree was a really comfy experience, as was putting it together. The one pictured here contains some parts of that original set (hinges, plate) as well as the original astronaut. He survived the many years since I got him and is in relatively good condition.
Not really much of a feature-heavy set, but certainly a nice budget set to get if you wanted a figure and a few parts.
What do you guys think of Spyrius overall? I know at least one Anon here collects them and has built some impressive MOCs. Other than that, I don't see them getting too much attention or love. Why is that?

Dunno about youtube, but these things helped me: When I buy a set, I try to build just by looking at the images on the box and never referring to the instructions unless I get stuck. Sometimes I'll decide to build something simple like a plane or a house, and just take a handful of random pieces and see what I can do with that. The last thing is maybe kinda high-level, but whenever I get something from bricklink I always check the store to see if they have large quantities of single parts for 1-2 cents each, because any 1 piece is a doohickey but when you stack 50 of them on top of each other, it becomes architectural. I'd honestly get this in a few colors if was possible and mod each of them a bit. This was a really neat build and does look good in yellow. And yes this bonus car is in teal. The lighting at my gf's sucks. Was just at her local Target and they had the flowers, a Jeep, and a few Bonsai trees left. Other than that it was all picked over.

Thank you for sharing these, yeah Spyrius seems to be one of the underappreciated themes, can't recall seeing any mega-MOCs for them like I have for Blacktron, M-Tron, Ice Planet and others. As a kid I only ever had their two smallest sets, the small saucer and the scooter you posted but when I first started Bricklinking I got myself a few more of the figs to have a more threatening enemy to my IP2002 and SPII guys.

Your guess is as good as mine as to why they don't have the same kind of devotion, they and their contemporaries Unitron exist in a bit of a vacuum, though for the latter's case it doesn't help their non-monorail sets were North American exclusives eh. Speaking of Unitron I have finally (almost) completed a vehicle for my squad that has been in limbo for over a year. Not really my best work but I got hooked on the idea and had to bring it to life. Might take a couple pics later, though I may also wait until I properly finish it.

More Spyrius MOCs will definitely be cool to see, do share as they come to life, heh. Have started on the additional component I had in mind for the Unitron vehicle so we'll see how long it takes, should be a quick build and I'll take pics. In the meantime here's an old Exploriens ship I have sitting around that they've been graciously sharing with the Unitron squad, really should pull it out and update it sometime. Exploriens share the same fate as Spyrius and Unitron, not much love for them either eh.

I think Lego sees itself as a brand licensing company. They're so desperate to have a successful video game gimmick for easy money and see he manufacture and sale of actual Lego sets as a hindrance. The way they watered down the Ideas Blacksmith shop is proof of that. How sad and soulless was the CADfag who butchered that MOC? I'm glad there's been pretty consistent backlash across all the review sites and I hope whoever did that is embarrassed and ashamed.

This is what most likely happened:

They sold their old road/base plates for alot of money. Right now, there is a white 32x32 baseplate for 8€ in the Lego online shop. 1 (one) piece!
No green, no sand, no blue.. only white is available.
They also stopped including baseplates in their police, fire- etc stations for city.

At the same time, literally all other companies that sell compatible bricks sell base plates for around 2-3€, in all colors you can think about, with or without prints of roads, coast-lines, rivers etc.

I would assume Lego noticed that people stopped buying their overpriced plates and thought about something clever to make the 3rd-party baseplates incompatible with their own city sets by using this new road. It raises the ground level by a bit, so everything on an old base plate won't work any longer, so people have to buy new roads..

Right now i'm waiting for a "classic space parts" set from ebay that i got for next to nothing.
It was supposed to arrive today, but the delivery guy did not arrive. Hopefully on monday.
With these parts and the remaining stuff i have from my Bricklink order i might be able to build a couple of smaller space sets in Aquashark colors.

I have tried some of the third party baseplates, like the max brand, and there is a slight difference in the quality, like with megablocks or lepin, the clutch power is all over the place, some barely sit connected, while other parts need so much force to go together that they stress the plastics, and they will never be separated again.

Of course there is Ebay etc, but some people want to buy their things in a store.

I have a few baseplates from China myself and while you are right about the various qualities of bricks from the various companies, these plates were perfectly fine.
Truth be told, i would rather buy 3 of these for 5€ and find out that 1 is shit than to buy 1 from Lego directly for 8€ that is only available in white. (what are they thinking by limiting the colors of their base plates to fucking white??)

Before I got into lego again as an adult it always entertained me to see it at someone else's house. Miniatures of any kind have always been interesting to me. Since no one's coming round because of covid, I've embraced leaving it out. It's nice to see some figs or a build caught in a sun beam.

I'd have to say I really don't care what people think of my hobby.. however, the people that do come over and get to see my LEGO room/city have an admiration for the incredible amount of work I've put into it. The usual questions are, how long did it take to do this and how much did it cost. Then for the people that have no clue about LEGO, they are blown away when they start looking closer and realize that it's made up of little individual blocks and that most of what I build are MOCs aside from some display pieces like the Jeep I posted earlier. Again, if someone had something negative to say about my hobby, I really wouldn't care, but it hasn't happened yet. My current G/F is actually looking forward to out next build. :-)

this is no one stop shop progress, if you don't just build what you want to build there's no reason to learn all kinds of technic or big humanoid figures and robot stuff if you just want to do buildings and cars etc.

Lego Legacy, but it's done like ninjago and they redesign sets limited to the current parts inventory and the minifigs are lower quality with less prints

So what's the verdict?

I feel like this is good for a free set, but not as great as it could have been. Three things that irk me in hand:
>The stickers suck, Lego could have very well gone printed for this set. It's only two pieces and even one in the concept model by the fan, so I don't see why Lego cheaped out. Don't think I mind the front sticker too much, but it looks strange on the curved bumper.
>Not a fan of the black plate on the back of the car either, it feels so out of place. Especially if you're the kind of person to leave them off. I replaced it with a silver metallic 1x2 and I think it looks fine as a substitute.
>The surfboards suck. I love how they work to create detail, but are held on so flimsily it's not even worth it, or at least not while thinking of dragging out dreaded superglue like a heretic.

Again, it's good, I don't hate it. But it feels like it could have been more premium for such a limited offer set. Could have used metallic instead of light blue-grey also.
Speaking of cars, got the Expert Mustang as my purchase. Maybe that set is blowing me away too much in comparison to this well-designed smaller one.

The only sets I really have out these days are the expensive collector-centric ones. Everything else eventually gets taken apart for MOCs. Mom likes to display the Saturn V, Volkswagen Camper Van, and even the Mandalorian brickheadz (her choice, not mine) in the living room. People who visit for the first time always ask about it, great conversation starter.

My room gets the Ideas Voltron, International Space Station, the Expert Mustang, and sometimes I'll bring out the Yellow Submarine or Tron Legacy sets. My sets are usually displayed around my six inch scale figure lines anyways, so they just add to my overall toy displays. Just get some nice furniture and keep your toys clean, and eventually no one will mind your hobby.

postal truck anon here, i was trying to mess with the colors to make it match the official lego postal service color scheme (which i really like, red and yellow is really striking) but i'm not sure if it's working yet. i might just go back to the original white, or maybe just change the blue elements on the original to yellow and red. it gives off a real "mcdonald's delivery truck" vibe and not "postal service delivery truck".

I have one suggestion. You probably won't like it as it means re-designing whole thing but anyway. I think your driver sits too close to the middle. For a van it is very strange configuration as it wasted studs that could be spend on cargo bay.
How about moving steering and driver one stud infront and adding two more studs of side walls? I think van with longer rear panel would look much better.

It is really surprising lego sat on the jurassic park theme for years and never made new brachiosaurus or stegosaurus. And are they done with it now? Is the license expiring? I know I know. it's perfectly fine, I'd say. Hobbies and owning them are really cool in the long run. But it's not only LEGO that I have on display. Basically I have 2 big bookshelves full of books, some DVD-s, some vinyl records, in front of them photos/souvenirs and LEGO. They are good display pieces and conversation starters. And when I bring a girl home she either already likes me so doesn't mind it, or it's dark as fuck and if next morning she'd say those are childish, I'd kick her the fuck out. My friends always admire my MOCs and Star Wars ships.

Lego has no patent rights on 32x32 plates with road printed on top of it.

I completely agree about the surf board sides. They look nice but hell if they will stay on if you want to vroom vroom the car. Scorpion Detector was the only Exploriens set I ever had, definitely agree on the weirdness of the line in general. Always been fond of their figs and insignia though. I find it really helps to have everything organized by part type; when I first conceived the Unitron norail and Bricklink'd needed components I ended up dumping them all together in a container as they arrived, and after a lengthy hiatus still didn't bother to organize them and thus the completion took longer.
Of course one can argue that organizing in advance takes as much time as hunting for pieces but as a plus you won't have to do it next time, so long as you keep it up. Unlike the Unitron project I've (mostly) maintained my yellow and trans-green organization; really need to take care of recent parts shipments though, heh. (Not pictured: 7-8 additional containers with larger parts)

While I do have a couple of MOCs, I like to modify existing Lego sets too.

Just got this set and loved it. Did some extensive mods though. I filled in the back of the lead truck, added more roof detailing to both, changed the back truck from a mobile lab to a tank type thing, built a new car that can go inside the tank, and did some tweaking to the tank's interior. I left the jet alone, though, since it was basically perfect.

I'm pretty satisfied with it, but I'd be interested if anyone had some suggestions on how to further improve things.

Appreciate it. Funny you mention the turtle van since that was sort of my inspiration with it.

As far as other sets I tweaked, I have a lot of stuff in storage (recently moved), but here's one I have on hand. I changed the medium sized ship to accommodate a mini jet I made that can be stored on top of it seamlessly. I also changed the shit that stores inside of the cargo bay.

I tweaked a bit of the ghost train, and instead of the 3 cars following it, I tried to make a coal/caboose car.

For the space limo, I had to change alot of it because I bought the set incomplete. So there's alot of improvisation there. Too much to point out.

Overall I'm actually happy with the helmets we have now. Maybe give us a few more colors. OR maybe give us a nicer plume instead of the 3 licks of fire we keep getting recolors of. the biggest step back from original to the lego set is the foundation. In the original there is plenty of space to position figures, accessories etc.. whereas in the "improved" version they removed it almost entirely.

Do you think Lego does pay attention to their competition?
Like, do they notice what sells well for the other companies and do they draw conclusions out of it?
For example classic pirate ships.
Apart from copies of Legos Pirates of the Caribbean sets i counted 35 unique pirate ship designs on Aliexpress, some on mulitlistings like pic related others as individual sets listed.
Some with 150 pieces, some with around 450 like pic related, others with 1500-2000 pieces, basicially a ship for every wallet.
Even if the bricks would be utter shit, there seems to be a huge market for pirate ships.. so why does Lego not act upon this and release a new range of pirate sets like they did in 2015? (or re-release their old sets like the Islanders or El Dorado etc).
You can blame the chinese companies for many things, but they would not produce (and design actually, there are quite some unique designs) that many ships if there was no market for them.

I'm not saying Lego needs to have 30+ ship designs for sale at a given time, but a small series of pirates would be nice.

Interestingly, "Castle" is far far less popular among the chinese companies.
Besides some Nexo Knight (which is a castle theme) copies and sets clearly inspired by it, there is only a hand full of actual medieval castle sets.

Link related is a ghost ship with 3600+ pieces, i think its a not licensed MOC design though.

Not gonna lie, I hated the original build and thought it looked like Megabloks shit (the rounded base especially reminds me of them). The textured wood prints, the roof tiles going every which way, all of it looks very un-LEGO. I wasn't going to even consider buying it until the official version leaked

Some MOC-designers charge money for their building instructions. And some chinese companies cooperate with them and give them money to produce a set based upon their design. Like CADA did with that Italian "not-ferrari" supercar. They gave the designer money for it.
I think this pirate ship is based upon someones MOC, but not officially. So it could be a no-go for someone with a strict moral compass.

I think this happens simply because there are more people casing votes than there used to be. It needs to be weighted better as a whole. For instance, the threshold should be a certain proportion of the total voter base.

The only real issue I have with the redesign is the color of the roof. I wish they would have gotten rid of either the dark blue or medium blue. They don't look right next to each other. Or maybe it should have been speckled. I don't know.

Personal taste in aesthetics, functionality, economics (some tile shapes and colors aren't cheap..), and other reasons. In my mind the smoother look is most appropriate for vehicles and vessels with speed and/or stealth as their greatest attributes. Big-time fan of the 90s space aesthetic so the studded look shows up a lot in my builds, which in a way makes the faster ships stand out with their smoother lines.

The ones I can see happen are the Lighthouse,, Wallace & Gromit, and maybe the roman ship.

Gravity Falls, Among Us, Jumanji, Red Dwarf, Avatar, not big or currently relevant enough (among us might disappear in a few months like Fall Guys did)

Colosseum and Police Station were done already; also Lego is never to make a Modular under the Ideas label so the Car Wash is also out.

Plane, MRI, racecar, garbage truck, colorful game thing, milwaukee musem, blue car are boring.

Bag end is from a retired theme.

Spirited away, little venice, viking village are too large.
Classic castle is also too large and it's derivative of the upcoming blacksmith, which Lego officially said is disqualifying.

Addams Family mansion would be nice and it's a timeless classic but it's already been turned down more than once so probably not. I would say it's also too big but it's licensed so it's not a big deal (see the upcoming Home Alone set)

GMC truck could make it as a creator set
Garbage truck has unique features if I remember correctly, was actually kinda cool
The rest are mediocre with the exception of Among us, ATLA, and the TXMG.
Those are absolutely fucking awful

you just pick a brick. it's in the name. i've never actually used the wall before but the selection on the site is pretty fucking lackluster so you're better off using bricks n pieces if you don't want to buy 3rd party

You pay a fixed price for a container (large or small), then you fill it with whatever shit you want, from the parts available in the wall. You can try to autistically place everything inside to maximize space, as long as the container can be hermetically closed.

Can be useful if you have a specific need for parts featured in the store you're in, of if you can find a clear purpose for them. Otherwise it might not be a good investment

I miss those days, hopefully they'll come back again. The Lego store here is pretty decent about it, they have a display of all the parts with numbers and letters and a form you fill out with what you want and quantities by 1/4, 1/2 or full scoop. The guy who filled my order also dumped some extras of each part in the bag to make up for the inability to form-fit everything, which was awesome.

They probably aren't selling nearly as much of it though as the parts selection has barely changed all year, unfortunately. I couldn't resist a heftly load of 2x8 yellow plates though.

I like Little Venice and Viking Village the most, but the latter might be "too violent" despite how that history is being rewritten by American media. Motorized Lighthouse is not bad for nanoscale
All the lazy shit based on an existing IP/license can go in the trash. The sculpting and repetition of pieces on the mimics are revolting.

There's two sizes of cups small for 8.99$ and big for 14.99$. It's the cheapest way to buy Lego bricks

All I ended up doing was swapping this >>8672305 for a more useful set.

59fucking$ for that because of the Marvel tax. I got both these sets in exchange, and they still owed me 8¢ so I just blew them a kiss and let them keep it as a tip to thank them for letting me exchange the set

This depends on what you imagine any given surface to represent. An office with a creamy beige floor might leave studs to look like shag carpet, a ballroom might be all tiles to look like polished marble. I like a mix of tiled and studded areas.

I think the lighthouse is a fav. Might add a nautical theme to my den, so that might be a good spot for it. Plus people love lighthouses, especially here in New England. Though we also get tourists to buy lighthouse merch too.
