Imo a lot of people came to transformers from star wars, lost in space, black hole, etc, where robots were genderless.
Transformers are really more like aliens. We cant even say if they are truly made of silicon, capacitors, resistors, etc. All we really know is that they can bleed liquid energy and are made of metal.
If you watch any of the show, we know they had gender pre movie. We know the quints built gendered robots and organic like robots. They have something like dna, or uts implied in call of the primitives.
Thinking they are like man made robots is just a big assumption kids made coming from other media. Actually watching the show or reading the comic, you see that they are mostly human or alien like avatars for writers that wished they were writing something like star wars or star trek.
I think that's how most kids approached it too. They self inserted as the transformers and not the humans.
