Planning a display

Hey guys. I'm in the process of ordering new display cases, but I want to make sure I plan it out correctly and get the right size, number of shelves, etc.

What is a general rule of thumb for figure spacing? If I have 1200mm x 420mm x 460mm for each shelf area, what the maximum number of figures you'd put on it (using risers). I'm thinking 30 before it becomes a clusterfuck.

Any advice from enthusiasts who have been through this before?

hmm, I can't super tell what the plan is here, but from the picture it looks to me that this is too low, I personally don't like when toys are at or near the ground. Shift everything up a square I'd say.
Also, move the berserk stuff to be closer to the non jjba stuff. Seems odd all by itself.
alternatively, you could alternate nonjojo with jojo, since those figures tend to be bright and attract the eye more than the others franchises you collect.

Thanks for the suggestion. I agree. I don't particularly like displaying at ground level either, but I have so much I kind of need to utilize the space.

For context, I have a company building me one for these cases, but i've requested it to be slightly wider. I know it has 5 shelves, but it's only 1980 tall, so not sure they'll give me the height I need.

Also, I'll have to think about where to put the berserk stuff. I was just going chronologically with no though about how it would look, from 83' (HNK) to '89 (Berserk)

Here's an example of what I mean about the height, since I previously had void on a riser, anything less than 400mm would have been a problem.

That said, I could always use small risers.

What do you enjoy looking at? I'm not clear on if this display is for you specifically, or if you making this for another person.

Thanks. Yeah, they are going to put in lights. This is closer to what I am looking at, but with a white finish.

The display is for me. I like dynamic arrangements, but struggle with getting a balance between "busy" and "clusterfuck".

Thing is, I really like LED strip lighting, so i'm wondering whether it's worth having spots in the top if i'm just gonna add strips.

/toy/ would call this crowded but I love this. would just remove the mirror in the back. In all honesty the people crying about crowded displays are people who can't buy that many toys anyway. If you want advice, the best is to go to the source; Araki himself. He does a ton of group shots all the time, full fo characters clustered together, the trick is to have the character composition flow; never having two characters on the exact same level, leading your eye up and down slightly. The display does a fairly good job of capturing that.

And personally I think LEDs look bad I'd go with the lights in the standard installation. LEDs always look like a patchwork solution, not a natural part of the case.

Which'll give you some options methinks. You can pose the front figures a tad more.

For me, I space say, 70% of a body width apart? That way, you can see the head of the figure behind, unobstructed. Spacing can be smaller if the risers are taller. It depends on scale and the figures in question. I mean, HnK presumably have wide shoulders so you may want to space them further apart but if the risers are tall enough, it wouldn't matter.

I suppose, just imagine each figure's personal space bubble?

It also depends on the characters. This display does seem cluttered, but that's probably a lighting and mirror thing. But it works for Jojo figures anyway.

Marvel Legends for example, you can have them stand close and at attention, if you're going for that poster look where they show every Marvel/DC character.

Transformers are another where you can have loads just standing like a faceless army.

But ultimately, it's your toys. Just do whatever feels right to you.

This is a half case in white with lighting. so my 2 will each be double this. They've offered me a %10 discount if I get 2, so I save £500.

Phew, I was about to go with the mirror upgrade, but you dissuaded me. Do you think the back should be plain glass, so you can see the wall behind, or should I get the cases backed?

OK, almost decided. Last decision is whether to have standard glass back, or white backed.

What would you do? I'm worried with a glass back that having the wall visible behind won't look great.

Also you should consider per level lighting if it's going to be somewhat crowded. The lights at the top would get occluded at the lower levels. If you don't want to use LED strips consider wiring angled spot lights at the corners.

You should use LED bulbs for all these lights as well instead of halogen.

definitely consider per-level lighting, or depending on the room the display is in, upgrading the lighting setup in the room itself. a complex lighting setup in a display cabinet isn't always necessary if the room itself is well-lit

Thanks. Attached is a pic of what they would have to do to bottom feed the cab. Effectively cut a corner out of every shelf and have a chrome pipe run down the inside corner.

My alternative to this is either getting my electrician to bring a cable in through the wall to the top of the cab, or a white backing. White backing seems the better options.

Lol, I was actually a big fan of the manga long before the anime came out and turned the entire series into a meme. Sad is seems to have gone on hiatus now and the only figure we got was the figma.

I'm getting 12 spot lights installed in the ceiling, so i'm hoping this will help and I won't need extra lights in the case.

In a standard detolf, anything more than 12 well posed figures on risers to vary the height looks crowded, so I'm guessing with that width you could probably hit 25 without it looking bad easy.

This display is going to be awesome. I'm excited to see it. I redid my displays recently and realized how shit standard American toys look when lit up and placed next to high end figures. I was collecting the new Joes but my God does the paint look bad when they are in a shelf next to figuarts/hot toys/chogokin/revoltech.

Thanks anon! I really appreciate your confidence. I'm nervous about getting it right since it's a lot of money and figures the voices on /toy are a lot more reliable than the sycophants found on most sm platforms. I'm all for tough love.

This is just a part of my collection, so you can see how even with 2 cabinets I could end up with a clusterfuck quickly.
