Speaking of which, im running out of good parts to build mechs with. Anyone have some suggestions on current sets I could buy to get some joints and cool looking pieces to fuel my addiction?

We have a slightly older IKEA Stuva (not my pic). It’s big. It is half-filled with LEGO and MCX. Sorting is all but impossible. I tried to separate all of the MCX from the LEGO, and gave up after a week of daily 2-hour sort sessions.

They crack over time when they stay connected.

The reason is quite simple, absolutely fatal and also the reason why we get so many hairline cracks and discolored pieces these days: somewhere around a decade ago Lego changed their plastics to clear ABS that they add pigments to during moulding in order to cut costs and not having to rely on pre-colored plastic from other companies (same as with the baseplates).
That stuff gets used for nearly every standard brick including clips which before were made from a slightly softer plastic that was actually a bit elastic while the current one is rigid as fuck.
Seriously, if you have any old sets still built that were never combined with new ones then check out the clip pieces on them: they are less shiny, feel different and softer and also make a different, duller sound when you gently bang them against each other compared to new ones.
The softness/flexibility gets even more obvious with flag pieces due to their size.

I really wish Lego would bring Mixels back. Thats what got me into Mech building and they were great for joints and pieces.

Makes me upset I never got the Clankers or the spooky dudes. Least I got a full set of the Spikels and a handful of others.
People gave them so much shit when they first launched. Wish Lego would do another budget line.

I mentioned it in previous threads, and I'm still mad that my area didn't get the last waves of those, since I was collecting them.
I also hoarded a bunch of duplicates still in their bags, that I got during clearances and some stores' closing sales. Slowly chipping away at them for parts.
I even rebuilt some of them back in the day by making random combinations of two or more, which I recommend it, it's a nice MOCing exercise.

I've had so many clip pieces crack over time. It's one of the reasons I avoid using droid arms when building whenever possible.
Also have gotten tiny cracks in minifig arms that are barely a year or two old, paranoid about even adjusting their hands these days.

Thanks. And might I add that Galaxy Squad was a kino line. I built pic related from the Eradicator Mech set (along with some joint pieces from some Kreo sets I had).

Its the second full on Mech I built like 7 years ago. I still need to get around to upgrading his joint system.

Do people only have one criteria for sorting? My collection is sorted by color and then by size, ie bricks>plates>tiny pieces, with more containers available if needed. Three tiers at least.

That's how I have done my sorting, it's easy since you can sift for the smaller pieces

when i had my collection sorted by color i spent way more time looking for that one black piece among the other black pieces, after taking the part type pill i spent a few weeks sorting while watching movies and now that its all sorted i can get building whenever i want, and after getting used to it for a while i can take apart whatever ive built and put the parts where they belong as fast as i could with colored sorting

I love Galaxy Squad but I only ever ended up with that spaceship and the walker polybag. Even then, I sold the ship to make room last year. Ah well.
I just need to find the inspiration because mecha are definitely something I adore. Need to fiddle with my parts for once and do something with them. Been wanting to give my Xalaxians some mech to call their own.

I "normalized" a Monster Fighter air plane. I bet alot of the MF vehicles could be normalized like that.

This. I only had bricks sorted by color, but once I reorganized them by type, I immediately noticed how much faster it was to be able to pull the correct size right away every time.

If I'm building, say, a tree, I'll only need brown, dark brown, and possibly dark tan or black. Sorting by color allows me to avoid digging through every other unneeded color to find the pieces I need.
I personally also sort each color by type, so it's even easier.

Personally, I don't sort my pieces. I have a big bucket full of random pieces, I dump it all on the floor, then start building. It does take me a while to find certain pieces, though.

parts lists from lego are sorted by color, so that in addition to it being the most intuitive way to sort is why I did by color, but now that I am moccing more and looking for specific parts, it being by color is showing its limitations

Something interesting I found while looking at the new Spider-man lair set, the official lego.com description for it specifies that the game console sticker and controller is a PlayStation. There doesn't seem to be a trademark or copyright notice anywhere on the page either. There's also a few formatting errors and typos on the page, along with the English being written in a very strange way that doesn't sound native at all. Compare this description with any other set and you can see that the others have descriptions that sound natural and are error free. Maybe this was translated from Danish as a placeholder and got put up by mistake instead of the real one?

Its clearly based on the Pirates of the Caribean Flying Dutchman, but the one on Lego Ideas looks way different from what Aliexpress shows.

Its not impossible that someone uploaded this as a MOC at some point, but its also not unlikely that some chinese designers did this by themselves.

You could ask the seller for a pdf instruction i guess. Sometimes they have them. (sometimes you even save 1-2€ if you agree to get the pdf only instead of the printed one)

Lepin is no longer, and the emblem on his instruction is from a different company.

It seems the instructions or that set design rather became free for all in china after Lepin was killed.
Mould King has a similar looking Flying Dutchman with a similar part count (3600+), but slightly different colors.

Make thencolor scheme multi colored to account for the fact that youndont have multiple pieces in the same color

I've run into the same issues with my MOCs. 9 times out of 10, there will be a workaround to these issues.

I want minifigures.

I don't care about rarity or value, i just want to have a large variety of figures. (and not getting poor by purchasing them).

How would you do this?

Buy random component lots on Ebay like pic related for example? 50 random printed legs for 5€.
If i find heads and torsos for similar prices i could get 50 figures for 15-20€.
Is there a better way? Lots of entire figures are usually more expensive. (sometimes way more expensive if the collectors spot something rare inbetween).

Or would buying figures or components on bricklink be cheaper? To stick with the example of 50 legs for 5€, that makes one pair of legs cost 10 cent. On bricklink some minifig components cost less than 10 cent, but can i buy them in bulk too?

Any advise is welcome

So apparently there’s going to be TWO Destiny’s Bounty variants this summer, one Legacy from Possession and one Hydro/underwater one.

Unless Ebay really fucks you in terms of shipping costs, I'd say that method is superior to Bricklink. In my experience with Bricklink(also a Minifig hunter, but Space-themed), various minifigure pieces rarely if ever get as low as 10 cents. They usually average 20-30 with plenty of rare pieces going way higher, and even that's dependent on the whims of the seller, as they set the prices, not the market itself.

If you can find similar or close deals for the torsos and faces(and maybe arms and hands too if you wind up ordering torsos WITHOUT those things), and a good bargain for accessories like hats and utensils, then your way is unmistakably superior.

You just have to find those deals first, and that's the lone advantage Bricklink has, as its market is more stable in terms of finding things than Ebay. They just cost more overall.

If you have a friendly neighborhood Lego shop, I'd start there. They tend to buy old collections and that gives them a lot of less than mint parts they are willing to make deals on. If that isn't your thing, you can try a subscription service. I have a year of "theminifigclub.com". It is fine overall. You get a few figures a month. Not the cheapest but its 3 random figures for like $11. Other than those kinda things, yea E-bay and get lucky.

I really wanted to like ultra agents. The villains were great but let's face it, the sets looked like shit. Especially compared to how amazing the builds in the original agents theme were. Compare the surveillance trucks or the volcano base to the oil rig and it's just pathetic. Black, grey and light trans blue is a terrible color combination too.

This looks like a mix of sets and moc. I see 10193 medieval market, 7189 village raid, 3739 blacksmith 6067 guarded inn. and 6083 knight tournament. The yellow castle is a variation on the original yellow castle. The gray house, gray tower and tudor barn you highlighted looks like crude mocs to me. The red roofed house seems more inspired and reminds me of idea book or concept like these as it follow the same design cue as the blacksmith but with a mix of old and new parts.

Ninjago meanwhile is a lot more loose and freeform, and basically becomes whatever it wants to be each year. Tonally it's also a lot more power rangers-y, in the sense that it can be a bit more campy (not in the bad way), like a saturday morning cartoon.
If you were specifically comparing the Bionicle comics to Ninjago's story, then yeah, I'd see what you mean for sure.

I mean I think he’s talking about how clips can grasp and hold tiles/the flat part of plates, but not entirely sure. And it’s not completely illegal, as that’s how minifigs grasp printed 1x2 tiles, but maybe minifig hands are different/sturdy enough to do so.

Studs are slightly wider than 3 nits. If they were exactly 3 nits then you could wedge a plate between two studs without deforming the studs and it would be legal. But you can't do that.

Started building this thick boy today. It's been a real pain in the ass working around thst translucent orange shark window piece.

It's nowhere near done. I have a bunch of pieces coming Friday to help thicken up the feet and shins, and give more detail to the arms.

Is the custom lego mini-figure business one worth getting into? I have experience in graphic design and opportunity to buy a pad printer that my work used for cosmetic packaging. Most of them are really old and worn, but one is newer and I can buy one $15,000 3 year old setup from my boss for $2,000 with the new units coming in end of February.

It's hard to say if it'll be worth it since that corner of the market seems popular but also really competitive with people doing extremely fancy print jobs, 3d printed and custom molded pieces, etc. Far exceeding the detail normal Lego figures.

Top Five Things I Miss About Old School LEGO

Ok, hello again; now before I get too into this I would first like to apologise for my long absence (you don’t need reasons, just the knowledge that I am sorry for it), secondly I would like to state that in NO way am I belittling the modern sets of today. I love modern LEGO (seriously come to my house sometime and look at the shelves, I have them packed full of the stuff). That being said there are a couple of things about them that makes me somewhat nostalgic for the classic's.

5) Theme/ Faction Definition (or the Lack of it)

Now my first gripe is somewhat difficult to explain but I will try the best I can. Back in the day LEGO didn’t really care too much on defining the characteristics of a set, for example check this out. Are they fighting? Are they friends? LEGO didn’t make you choose it simply said ‘here are a bunch of knights and a castle, now get to it kid and have some fun!’

Sure they had some definition (the Pirates looked badass for example) but that wasn’t what defined the theme and that wasn’t the focus of the sets. What I am trying ‘inexpertly’ to say is that nowadays in the majority of themes we are told the names of the figures, what their motivation is and who they are fighting against as well as an overriding story arch for the entire theme.

It’s disappointing because it’s making children lazier why imagine some wonderful story when you can just watch Lord of the Rings and then act out that exact seen from Helms Deep. Yes I am being a little unfair here, but my point is no less valid. My ten year old brain had some amazing times (far better than any movie could ever get) me but now days that’s not the case. Shockingly enough I have even seen kids refusing to mix their LEGO sets because they don’t want to mix SpongeBob bricks with their city stuff! That’s not the way an eight year old should treat their LEGO.

4) Packaging

The packaging of my youth had some magic to them, the big sets had fold up flaps were you could see all the LEGO, the back of every set had alternative builds and everything looked amazing as there was no digital images in the background .

Now a modern set looks good (if not a little focused on the action).

I have a problem with modern packaging but I can understand why they put less effort into them. When I was a child I would visit the toy store every week, look at all the sets, shake every box and lift up every flap, it was exciting for me because that was how I saw what was new and available. Today finding a Toy Store is difficult enough and then even if you do, why go to all the trouble of leaving the house when you can simply order the thing online? (And probably pay less for it, ‘all hail the blessed Amazon’).
Nowadays there is no motivation for a child to leave the house, his universe starts and ends on a keyboard, everything he needs is there. I honestly don’t know any child aged below eight who doesn’t know how Amazon works or how to operate windows. Ok so this gripe is also against the modern world, things were better in my day, I like napping, mumble, mumble, mumble, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Well, online shopping is the new comfort. I recently visited a shopping mall to look for some legos, haven‘t been there since I was a kid. I had so much expectations because I do remember they had all kind of sets, big to small, super rare to common. I would spent at least an hour looking at every damn set. Now it‘s all gone, a small shelve with like 10 sets and half of the them are marioshit is all what is left.

3) Baseplates

Most classic sets had Baseplates, even the smaller sets; they would get a smaller Baseplate. Baseplates are awesome they give you so much freedom to do what you want and build what you like. Nowadays most sets (even big £80+ sets) don’t have Baseplates. This sucks.

I think I made my case quite elegantly there.

For that kind of money, you could get the new police station modular, or the ninjago ice mech (with bending knees!). As far as mechs are concerned, I'm smitten with both demon bull king and the monkey king mech.

Now I know this gripe will be the one that causes the most anger, there are a lot of ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Harry Potter’ nuts out there and they are about to be equalled by a similar number of ‘Lord of the Rings’ fanatics, so firstly I will state it again.

I like these sets; I love ‘Star Wars’; I love all Licensed LEGO magic and I understand that the sets are an important revenue stream for LEGO and some are released to co-inside with movies. Ok now that’s out of the way, as a reward I give you the below image.

My problem with the licensed themes comes in three forms.

My first problem with it is the lack of imagination it gives to children (I mentioned it above read number five to remind yourself if you have no idea what I’m saying now).

My second problem with it is the cost, yes I know they have to pay for the licence but the sets are so much more and for a child with limited pocket money it just starts looking unfair. We all want Darth Vader and Chewy minifigs but this sort of purchase is at least 20% more than the cost of a non-licensed set (and can go even higher).

Average that out over the five years a child will normally collect LEGO (6-11ish) and they will have a much smaller collection. This smaller collection will again be tailor made to their theme and will allow little in the way of original building (wait I'm going back to point one again, sorry). It’s just that a child’s pocket money is special and to charge the most for the sets he (or she) is most likely to want seems a bit miserly.

My final and biggest problem with the licensed themes is the sheer number of them and the question of what could have been build instead. We have so many licensed themes that last a short while and then disappear; why go to all the trouble to release a theme when it lasts such a short amount of time?

Instead of having designers working on ‘Prince of Persia’, 'Toy Story' and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ sets for a year why not have a range that is worth something and doesn’t leave the collector felling like a jilted lover dumped halfway through their fourth date (the date just after they had put out)?

Imagine what LEGO could have designed without their overreliance on licensed themes?

5) Instructions

Instructions I hear you cry (its ok cheer up) we still have them, that’s not something to miss. Well actually the old style instructions were very different to the modern ones of today, they knew how to challenge a kid, and they gave the whole building process fun. Once when I was four years old they made my dad sit for five hours on Christmas day trying desperately to build the Kings Mountain Fortress rather than engage in his more traditional activity of getting hammered.

Seriously these old instructions were the boss; they even required you to build parts of the set without actually seeing were the brick needed to go and as for a piece call out for each step you can forget it. You show the instructions how clever you are, not the other way around.

I remember that building a bigger set felt like a real achievement. For example the 1989 Black Sea Barracuda (6285) required 28 steps to be built whereas the 2009 Brickbeards Bounty (6243) requires 57 and comes with two manuals; their respective piece counts are 909 for the Barracuda and 592 for the Bounty.

Seriously can we stop dummying things down for the kids; every generation before them didn’t start basing their heads against the wall when the received a challenge, these ones won’t either. You never know what could happen if they feel a little inspired.

I hope that one day we as a species can move on from nostalgiafagging. The one point that I think is particularly retarded is when they say that licensed star wars sets discourage creative, as if 1. star wars didn't exist in the 80s and kids weren't already building their own lego star wars at the time and 2. that a set is star wars means kids won't do anything else with them and they will rot on a shelf forever. Neither of these are true. The way kids play with legos basically hasn't changed since they introduced minifigures in the late 70s.

This doesn’t really work well in a large action figure format. The name says it all, minifigure. They have the benefits of larger figures and miniatures. As for the terrible prices, this is balanced out by custom LEGO producers. Their capes, weapons, characters, etc. are often times more affordable and higher quality than “real” LEGO.

As for stunted imaginations, I don’t really think that this is that good of an argument. As a kid Star Wars was fairly similar to Knights or Pirates in the sense that it was a “universe” for a story or other action to take place. I didn’t solely reenact exact historical events just as I didn’t reenact exact scenes from the movies.

Regardless, your posts are pretty great and licensed themes have without a doubt degraded. LEGO Star Wars is sadly no longer a $10 battle pack of four classic clones.

I work in Toy store, and tI encountered fucking parents that GLUE their kids Lego, because they are tired to rebuild it themselves.
I met kids that are NOT ALLOWED to mix sets
I met kids that laughed at me when i said bricks are bricks and you can buy whatever set you want.

What are the most essential rooms for a Lego house? The building I have planned will have three small rooms. I'm thinking of a kitchen and a bedroom, but I'm not sure if the third room should be a bathroom or something else.

By definition they already make them, see the chinese new year sets.
It might increase the consumers to. Like chinese now will buy christmas sets, even they dont celebrate it, but it belogs to this series that features chinese holiday characters.

Everything is fine. Just asking out of curiosity. Random minifig parts is rather odd, random bricks is ok, but minifig parts are very limited in their use.
At first i thought this will be a lego scene where you need many different viewers, like a sports arena.

That might be true, but then again, its only 15€.
If i can find heads and torsos for a similar price i will end up with around 50€ for 140+ figures, which is quite nice in my opinion.
And who knows what projects some of these might spark.
