Hey /toy/ I've been on a little Robocop kick and kind of want a figure of him in my collection. I'm wondering what my best options are quality/cost wise?

At the moment I'm thinking its between the Mafex and Figma robos. I see one from a company called Hagane Works, but I don't know the first thing about their quality...

Hagane works is basically GSC attempt at a premium SOC type line. They released a Mazinkaier which seems pretty solid. Their also releasing an ED-209 in their model kit line to go along with their robocop.

He appeared in the new Mortal Kombat and KFC commercials fairly recently as Robocop. I think he just wants too much money for his likeness and it was too cost prohibitive for Neca. Hot Toys got his likeness, but they paid more.

Hiya Toys has been making 1:18 scale Robocop figures for the past year or so.

They've done normal Robocop.
Robocop 2 with graffiti
And this guy.

I think one of hte robocops comes with Kain's brain case

I was really excited that this was the first ED-209 (at least to my knowledge) since the Hot Toys that actually had poseable toes, to do the iconic "feeling around" pose. Get the Mafex, it is without question the best "balanced" Robocop available right now. As in, it strikes the perfect balance of sculpt, price, poseability, accessory count, etc.

I'm not sure if you're referring to Hiya or not, but if you just mean any Robocop fig, it's the Mafex that comes with Cain's brain.

It also has swappable parts for his caved-in chestplate and the plasma torch damage to his helmet, which is sweet.

I used to have a McFarlane Robocop but my dumb teen ass broke it. It wasn't bad at all for the price and the limited articulation didn't bother me much since Robocop couldn't wipe his own ass

I'm putting my vote in for Mafex toy, specifically the Robocop 2 version.

You miss out on the Dataspike accessory Mafex's Robocop 1 had, but the second movie toy comes with great articulation, leg holster parts, and the best paintjob I've seen on a Robocop toy. Most companies, including Mafex's 1, go with a flat silver for his armor plates, while the Mafex 2 manages to get the iridescent reflection pretty well (the purple-blue shine effect).

Me personally, I'm not doing a lot of crazy posing with him, so I made the choice strictly based on what colour robocop is in my mind, rather than how often I'd pose him stabbing people in the neck.

Unlike ED209, who is a giant, stiff puppet/prop designed to have exaggerated feet so he can stand his big ass up in the background while shooting the movie, Cain's design, specifically his lower body, is very poor in regards to toy stability.

Not only would he balance terribly, or rapidly develop floppy hips and knees trying to support his massive upper body, but you'd also have to figure out how to design the toy to basically revolve around housing and transforming the chest cavity into an "open" version for his face screen.

Kotobukiya's blind box styled cain figure is probably your best bet for design accuracy, but I should note even with fairly non-existent articulation, he needs the included stand to stand on your shelf.

It's worth noting that, especially if you're in between Mafex and Figma, there's a significant size difference.

If you want Murphy to hang out by himself in a bookshelf or something, fine, but if he's destined to hang out with other toys, Mafex is going to be closer to "accurate" height compared to your other figures.

All in 1:18 scale.

I know NECA's name is basically mud around here, but I am actually quite happy with my NECA Robo and ED-209, I have Robo on the shelf in his standard gun pose and he looks fine. Though I have the first release, the later release with the spring holster is prone to awful QC from what I hear. I also have the Re-Action Robo and Glow-in-the Dark homage, which are both fine for the price. But really if you want something you can play with, track down the Robocop Toy Island did for Robocop the series, alternate clean and battle damaged armour, decent articulation, sliding data spike. It's also the only Robocop I'm aware of that has an actual police car that he can ride around in.

Collectors would be fine with having a support to make him stand; it would be an accepted compromise just for the fact that we would finally get a Cain figure.

I think people overall were happy to get the NECA Queen Xeno even with the torso support that had to be used to make it stand. Cain could be done with some kind of support and collectors would still buy him.

I wish NECA would do an ultimate Robocop with updated articulation. I know they've said they won't since the actor refuses to give his likeness, and they feel without a Murphy face head it wouldn't be "ultimate"

Their regular Robocop suffers from being a NECA figure from like over half a decade ago. It's fine, but it's just fine.

If they were to put out a new Robocop in a quality that's up to their modern standards I'd think it'd be great.
I debate on getting the MAFEX one because I would like a more articulated Robocop, but he wouldn't scale well with much of my collection.

NECA's ED206 though, is awesome. Another reason why I want them to just do an updated one, MAFEX doesnt have an EDF to scale with

Other than that, is there a big difference?
The colors of R2 Robocop looks nice, but I'd want something accurate to R1.
Does MAFEX's R1 Murphy have worse articulation than R2 Murphy? I thought it was basically just a repaint, other than the accessories.

The Kenner line had 15 individual characters and 7 vehicles. You also had out of those 15 characters, 7 villains for Robo to fight, and he had a cast of supporting characters. Toy Island only really had Robocop for the majority of their releases. For "The Series" they had just one villain, so there was pretty much nobody for Robocop to fight.

It's...not great. Its only real asset is that it's a nice size to interact with most of my collection. It doesn't have any sort of foot articulation, even a simple balljoint, much less toe articulation, and this is actually significant here because it's required to do one of its most iconic poses. I also wasn't too happy with the paintjob, it's too metallic/pearly. I know the real ED-209 has a bit of metallic shine to it, but this is overkill. Nearly every other company that has made/is making one hews closer to a semi-gloss/matte grey that looks more accurate to the film.

I'd be happy to kick this to the curb the minute another vaguely 1/12-ish ED-209 comes out. I have my hopes set on the Moderoid.

If you hate it, you hate it, but really what do you expect the ED-209 to do other than just stand there. That's ALL IT DOES. It stands and occasionally swivels the upper body. I get wanting to pose it like in the stair scene, but that's just begging for a shelf dive.

The Kenner car is a cool design in and of itself, but I really do hate how they went generic sci-fi with the toys. For me a big part of the appeal of Robocop is how grounded in reality it is despite the premise, that's why I prefer the Toy Island police car because it's a realistic car. That being said you are totally on the money about how limited the Toy Island line is, I would have loved more playsets, maybe a NeuroBrain set with Dr. Cray Z. Mallardo, Chip Chayken, and a ghostly Diana Powers that has a wire in the feet/legs that causes the whole set to light up when you plug her into the central chamber or something.

I can get that, I just don't really think of walking poses when it comes to ED-209, I just think of it standing there menacingly. Really what NECA should have done is included some removable effects pieces for the gun barrels, and a static piece of Kinney on the table being blown apart. Make the ED-209 a little scene specific. If Super7 can do similar, why not NECA?

Someone on Devianart made this slick looking replacement--it's resin with a layer of fabric to simulate that texture. I have seen some old auctions for the exact same piece, so I guess they sold some too. No idea how long ago that was though, or if you can still find it. Seems like there's certainly a market for these parts in any case.
