Just because most nerds like anime, doesn't mean they like or read manga. Don't get me wrong, I personally do like manga and think it's a wonderful medium, but it's definitely not bigger than standard comics books in the west.
Western comics had one of their highest sales peaks in the late 80s/early 90s until the investor bubble burst then sales started declining (hence 30 years), and I have heard that "the industry is gonna totally collapse in the next couple years" for decades. It's always some different boogeyman (lately it's "woke SJWs ruining comics") the fact is comics have been shit for a very long time, but they have been consistently shit and sales always fluctuate, remember Marvel was going bankrupt in the 90s, but they're owned by Disney now, so they're never going away.
