So having been absolutely blown away by the Giant Robo OVA, what's the best figure of the titular mecha? I know there's the SRC and the Revoltech, and IIRC Yamato made one too?

I wouldn't say there is a BEST ONE at the moment, the SRC would be the one that barely fits that title somewhat appropriately. If you're a size queen autist, the Yamato is the one that looks like the best option if you can find him, if you want him to move real good, the SRC or the Revo are good, the SRC has a way sharper sculpt though. I'd wait for him to get out of the mecha cuck zone and wait for him to get a SOC, a ThreeZero, a Pose+ or a CCSToys release since they make big boy approved metal robots that are satisfyingly large and have modern articulation.

Right, thanks anon. The SRC looked like the best (so far) option, I'm certainly no size queen so that's not a concern- I'd rather have a well articulated, well made and fun figure at a smaller size than a Grug approved big toy that can't actually do much. I'd definitely be interested in a SOC (or similarly top-end figure) though as the one SOC figure I have- Soul Spec Eva-01 Renewal- is one of the most awesome figures I've ever handled even in spite of its age, so I might wait.

The chogokin is a great little toy, but it sort of feels like it's the non-premium release of the design, and there is no premium version, if that makes sense. Like it should've come with just a few more extras. A busted head, a frosted part to clip on the shoulder, the electric cables, I dunno, something a little more.

As a toy it's fine though. A little restricted in posing but nothing you could do anything about without altering the design or giving it something like a movable skirt. Keep an eye on those waist guns, they can flick off when handled.

The OVA never really took off in Japan, and from what I’ve heard the director Imagawa retired, completely unsatisfied with the state of the industry, and is now making ends meet as a taxi driver, which apparently pays a lot better in Japan than it does here. I can’t really see more merchandise for it coming down the pike

Yeah, Giant Robo is pretty much a dead franchise at this point. The reboot during the mid-00s for the 40th anniversary failed to generate any lasting interest and the SRC binned pretty hard as a figure release.

The series could have had a potential decent impact in the west like its spiritual successor Big O but the OVA format of the original series probably made it too difficult to properly market/air.

Pretty much. The full series was supposed to only take 3 years at most to release but what we eventually got took over 6 years and without even a proper finish.
