Sure, it would be great it everyone could donate and volunteer and enact real change, but the fact is, that's just not feasible for many. People have their own lives, with their own work and families and bills to take care of. And yes, past that, some people just wanna look good to their followers. But that's the thing: to you, a simple retweet in support says "this person is just doing this for the clout, to make themselves look good." Ok, so what? That tweet will be seen by many others, especially if they're a famous or influential figure, and can potentially spur greater change in each and every one of the network of users it reaches. It also adds to the voices supporting downtrodden causes and people, letting them know they're not alone.
This is a glass half full vs. half empty mentality. It doesn't matter much to me if someone genuinely cares or if they're just doing it for the optics. It's still a net good in my eyes.
