>>8722099>The themes are fun, but rather common themesThey're not only fun, they are significant and they diagnose an entire culture, Otomo leveraged the setting to its fullest extension, leaving Ridley Scott looking like an amateur with Blade Runner which is where Akira takes its setting from, and the themes were not at all common at the time. Any other theme has been used more often in Japanese media than the themes treated in Akira.
>and I didn't fully bond with the characters, they didn't feel real or aliveThis is a you problem, nothing to do with the writing, Otomo writes very human and real characters, hell, he writes teenagers better than any other shonen series, the reason you couldn't connect with them is because you're used to your moe and shonen characters, there's a handful of other Japanese mangakas that can write people as PEOPLE as well as Otomo. Akira is sci-fi of the highest order, without the faggot propaganda people like Arthur C Clarke puts in his works.
> they'd only be moderately worse if not equal.Wrong, none of the holds a candle to Akira, not by a long shot, the only reason I give DB a pass is because it doesn't take itself as seriously as to be considered on the same level.
>Akira has a heavier focus on art, while those are more geared towards entertainmentMaybe the only sensible thing you've said. And there's nothing wrong with entertainment.
