/biz/ here, do all toys go up in value? I noticed that some marvel legends action figures I bought years ago are worth like 70+$. What exactly gives a toy value?

not always true, some get replaced by better figures and the old ones become worthless. others don't survive very well (certain mezco figures, certain plastics that degrade fast) and tend to degrade after 3-4 years

Toys are basically one of the worst collectibles to make money on. It's a total gamble every time, they're at risk of degradation, damage or rarely just being miscasted or broken even in box, there's no sure ways to tell whether something truly will never be reprinted or replaced with a superior release, and character popularity is very fickle. The only toys guaranteed to commandeer a high price later usually already cost shitloads and are prizes, exclusives, or otherwise unattainable to an average customer anyway.

The whole pop culture concept of the nerd media collector worth millions largely seems to be based off a time when disposable income meant pretty much anything could be seen as a valuable investment, and it was actually theoretically possible some dude might actually pay ten thousand dollars for baseball cards. However this has worked in the opposite way, and now if you have a little money to spare you can pretty much buy any odd toy you want, if you don't mind the scalper price. Very few things are actually unattainably rare, and usually less because they're actually worth that much and more often they've just all found forever homes by now.

So shit that even shelf warmed tends to go up in price.

Maybe years from now, all those Overwatch toys that were sold off at Ross and Marshals for $5 will cost $100.

A combination of age, rarity and demand(quality), even if something is 1/50, people gotta want it, there might be someone but you'd have to search him out.
Like the other anons mentioned, most toys do not get the big bucks anymore, this is because too many people have "gotten wise" and started collecting for the purpose of selling, leading to massive excess of nearly every modern age toy. Unless you buy specifically exclusive items, you won't be making much money.

Import figures are a different story, even some DBZ figuarts have insane value.

the value is how many people want it vs how few there are. if a character from a small print run becomes suddenly popular it's price will be high. similarly if a large number of the original run were destroyed it will go up in price.

if you're asking how to predict in advance which ones will make you money at the point where they are available at retail, get a time machine.
