Any advice on how to continue these guys.
I've had to redo the faceplate on the left because I couldn't do the lines as straight as I needed and i don't know what to do about the flat surfaces of the helmet on the left.
I'm turning them into Greejeeber/Rollbar and Slicer by the way.

Does anybody have tips for shrinking silicone molds? Or more specifically how to gauge how much they’ll shrink? Or maybe link somebody who could shrink it professionally? I understand the process fairly well, but I don’t like the idea that I can wait 10 days or maybe even more, and have something that cost me $50 be just completely un-useable; it’s not the biggest thing in the world, just an old mattel last action hero figure.

I wouldn’t use clear joints, they are notoriously brittle. I’ve had figures with clear joints crumble while in storage.

To make a figure? Ya pretty much. Also get some thing aluminum tubing they typically sell at hobby stores so you can cut the tubing to arm/leg/torso length, slip the end of the joint in them and have a flexible armature to put putty right down onto of. That's what I wish I did instead of trying to drill all the little holes to get the ends in into straight epoxy.

A friend of mine gave me a figure of Dan Aykroyd in a lab coat. I’m guessing it was from Ghostbusters and he only wanted the accessories. Decide to turn it into this dude. I know the hands aren’t in as far as they should be I guess I’ll have to fix that later.

Update. Got the figure more or less ready for test-printing. Went for double-barbell shoulders for reliability and sturdiness, bicep swivel using a swivel-cut, hinged elbows, and a ball-socket set of hands that snap onto the wrist ball ends. I'll try to place an order on Shapeways this coming week along with a few other things I've been working on to save on shipping.

I had always interpreted the grappling as being the hands of the rig firing off on a cable winch and gripping things. I had meant to pop the hand off and take a pic using some string or wire to be the cable, but I guess I forgot to. I'll do a picture of that soon.

I've had to come to terms with this myself, basically I genera compare it to the product it's normally based on and either aim for around the same or above.

Examples:

Use about as many colors as the official product and minmax the amount you can get out of what you have (Simulated budget).

When sculpting look at examples that official products and find the flaws in each, that way you can feel better if your sculpt is slightly off or uneven.

Spend time on your project, but dont over think it, because you'll only burn yourself out and lose interest or joy in the project/hobby.

Hey, folks. I'mhaving to touch up gold paint on a gold repaint of a Figuarts Ultraman Zero Beyond because the QC ror this release was apparently non-existent. I've touched it up fairly well with some Folk Art Metallic Pure Gold acrylic paint, but it's somewhat hazy now that it's dried. You can sort of make it out here on the left shoulder. Any advice you guys can offer?

No, remove the paint (it shouldn't be durable) and get proper hobby paint. Learn how to thin your paints as well so you don't get streaking, you can see tutorials on Youtube.
Citadel, Tamiya, whatever paint. Folk Art is cheap shit and used more for crafts than hobby goods

Speaking of resin and molds, is there any way to efficiently clean the little measuring cups that come with these bottles? Soap and water doesn't seem to do much, and wiping them out with paper towels never gets all of the residue.

Maybe it's easier to just switch to yogurt containers/or cups made out of the same plastic? Just mark off the level it should be filled to. They seem to work well for this guy-

Is there a way to make wire tubing at home?
I was thinking of trying to design a 2 inches tall Sonic CD Sonic to print but I'm afraid that the limbs will have to be wires because of the design's proportions.

Have you considered getting a hollow tube and putting a metal wire through it?
See if there's a Lego technic piece like that. I know they have tubes with grooves, not sure if there are plain tubes (haven't built a Bionicle or technic set in like 14 years to remember)

A few threads back I asked for some advice regarding some excess plastic on a figure

I got told to sand it away, and I did, but because I can be a bit of a klutz, I ended up going over just the bit I intended to sand. There's a feint white kind of scratch mark on that part now, how do I get rid of that? I tried water and it looked like it worked but once it dried it was back again.

Gradually work your way up from 200 to 400, then 800. Should smooth it up a good bit. If all else fails spray on a quick most either clear coat or matte, which ever matches the figure.

800 grit should do it though, honestly.

As for the spray, what type do you mean? I'm not very good with figures at all, so I don't actually have a lot of stuff to hand.

On a completely different note, another stupid question. I know some of you can repair and fix figures and paintjobs yourself and stuff. How do you find the matching colors and stuff to ensure you do a good job? Not that I plan to myself, just something I've generally wondered

The way to make something smooth is rubbing it with increasingly smooth surfaces. I have sand paper sponges that go up to 1200 grit, and beyond that you can get polishing compounds and use a microfiber cloth, though I'd only recommend that for a transparent piece

Yes, partially because you're sanding with less coarse sandpaper over time, the scratches will become shallower and shallower, leaving a smooth surface.
No need to spray anything, that would just be for a consistent finish.

A good strategy is to sand in circles, light and quick, and check often

Whitish marks in plastic can also be stress marks.

Honestly just use silicone cups or those silicone cupcake base things, the resin cures and you can just pick it right off and reuse the cup again. If there is still residue of uncured resin in the cup, just wipe with rubbing alcohol or those disinfecting wipes.

There are tons of videos. It's basically what you're saying, just slice it, and from there there are different ways, but one I've used was using a pin vise to make a hole, then put in a tiny screw. Put in a tiny hole into the other side, a less material on the inside and more on the outside, basically so the screw head will fit in there, but not pop out.

I ordered a headsculpt on AliExpress for a custom. I had used a TBLeague head that had the right haircut but when I saw a shrunk down recast of the Kumik Mathilda head I had to order it. I was afraid it might be too large for the Sozai-chan S body I’m using and it is a bit larger but it might work for a child character. The TBLeague head might actually have been too small (and it’s tiny on the body it’s intended for).
The quality of the head is great, it’s smooth, solid, the detail has been preserved, the only clean up needed from supports is on the underside. I’ve already ordered another headsculpt from the same seller.

Depends on the medium. Sandpaper of various grits (ultra fine, fine, medium, and coarse), clay sculpting tools, files, hobby knife with extra blades, dental tools would work well too for finer details, and a pin-vise, drill press, or dremel.

Little update, I tried at it with 240 grit sandpaper, it seems it's just scratching the material now rather than smoothing anything. Kind of weird. I don't want to go further in case I really mess it up. It is sanding, but it's also leaving those white scratch marks

Only way is dremel but it won't be 100% if the plastic is really rubbery and soft. But it will do the job. Look up videos on cutting with a dremel or using it at all. Honestly it's a must have for anyone making custom toys and for comfort: get the rechargeable cordless one.

I’m having trouble painting on top of a Tamiya primer coat. Like the paint doesn’t really adhere to primer. It pools in crevices, or a previous coat gets removed when I try to apply a new coat. It happens with Vallejo and Tamiya paints. I’m having to apply very thin coats, let them dry completely an then carefully apply a new coat. Painting on bare plastic is easier for some reason. Am I doing something wrong?

Figured I'd post something. Made this Titan from Kamen Rider Stronger a while back. Based on the DC Capullo Red Hood, so the tuxedo buck was good to go almost OOB. Sculpted the head from scratch, added back of glove details, did the muffler and shirt after cutting out the original's tie.

I’m mostly done painting the head, I just need to touch up some places. I modified the Sozai-chan S body with the midriff and panties of a Sozai-chan M body to get a more natural silhouette.
Now the difficult parts:

I’m guessing you cut where you want to make the joint, you screw the screw in one of the parts, you dremel a hole in the other part with a wide end on the top, you heat up the part with the hole and you push the screw into it until the head of the screw pops into the wide part of the hole which holds it in place.

I just move from the US to europe a couple month ago for a 3 years contract gig. How do you guys collect fodder materials? In the US we can buy some cheap Amazon prime pegwarmer Marvel Legends for a female buck or bucky cap buck, or star wars black series for $5.99-$7.99. But here in europe seems like marvel legends are 25 euros at least and even the pegwarmers are never on discount. Do you just eat the price and have a more expensive fodder to deal with?

I do repaints, or I replace headsculpts, or I work with blank bodies from HobbyBase, TBLeague, Damtoys, etc. Must be nice to have plentiful cheap fodder but that’s not really feasible here where the toy market is much smaller

Has anyone had any experience in prepping the joints for the newer Marvel Legends hulk figure?

I'm thinking of getting pic related and paint it in skin color just to make an angry muscular old man martial artist type. Like Gouken from Street Fighter or God (literal god). But I am concerned about paint rub and the difficulty of cracking the figure apart, joint prep, etc on non-standard figure.

Could you clarify what you mean by "set up"?

Export your 3s model as an STL file and import it into the appropriate slice it NG software. For FDM (plastic filament) printing, try Cura. For SLA (UV resin) try chitubox or whatever is recommended for your printer.

In these programs you can start learning about slicing models (the name for processing a model to prepare instructions for your printer). Start thinking about what angle of overhang you'll have, and how to support it.

With some clarity on your question, and some specifics on what type of printing, I'd be happy to dive deeprr

Soft goods? That just means cloth elements. A 1/6 figure without soft goods is just naked. I think you mean soft plastic parts. I’m sure there are lots but I don’t collect this scale so I can’t tell you which ones are good.

Yeah, same here, it's mostly Hobbybase. Capeshit has only started to become more popular in Europe in the last 10 years with Marvel movies, so there's not as big of a demand for it from adult collectors who didn't grow up with them. Your option is just to eat the price, sadly.
We also don't really have the ease of access to the same products that Americans use for customising, which will be another thing to get used to. I'm always jealous when I see you guys casually mention going to Walmart or Home Depot to quickly pick up what you need.

Anyone ever design their own packaging? My computer head robot figure was in the OP for the last thread so i decided to go back and update the packaging for him for my portfolio. If anyone has any feedback let me know.

I have the physical copy of it after someone posted it a while ago and I ended up splurging and getting it. It's like 80% how to pour molds and cut simple joints. Kinda disappointing. If no one has a PDF I'll scan it up tonight.

Good luck! I mostly made packaging as an excuse to learn a new design medium, and it's always good to have practice making things in Photoshop/Illustrator. I'd recommend Adobe Dimension for the rendering even though it's a very new piece of software that has a bunch of issues.

It was debunked, as they used forensics from a completely different part of israel than Mary was from, and also took creative liberties such as defining "not long hair" to mean "short cropped hair" and also assumed he had a much darker skin due to being poor, even though he would have done most of his work in doors.
I'd look at the oldest paintings and go from there

curious about something, I've noticed that some portable electronics over the years have used a metallic paint color (ie. metallic silver on tons of portable devices in the early 2000s) and what I'm curious about is how they made that paint so durable. I know it's paint because you can see instances where it was rubbed off or scratched off in places on old, roughly-used models, but it is still extremely resilient. I have tried doing my own painting of ABS in well-handled electronics before, but it didn't work at all. The paint quickly grew discolored and scratched off with minimal effort.

What I'm curious of is, how do product manufacturers make paint that goes onto ABS and stays there despite taking a beating? I want to custom paint ABS shells and toys and such, but I don't know how to get the same resulting durability. I'm not sure where to ask about this, but hopefully you friendly /toy/anons can help me out.

Example of what I'm talking about, far as I can tell these are all painted and it holds up really well, all things considered.

Just drill holes matching the rod diameter or slightly smaller (i.e 2.9mm hole for 3.0mm pin). I recommend brass because it's stiff enough for most customizing work, but still soft enough for you to cut 3.0mm diameter rods with plain wire cutters.

You could try the freeze method. Stick it in the freezer for half an hour then heat it up again.

Not sure how much you'd risk the entire figure though unless you can remove the boot first.

From what I've read, the factories use these comically toxic paints that will rob you of years of your life while in gaseous or liquid form but become completely inoffensive once they dry.

This is kind of a strange question, but I have this sofubi figure that had a small chunk cut off (not to the point of exposing the hollow inside though). Drill into it partially with a nice thick/strong bit, then use the embedded bit to yank it out. Also, jeez, that's one of the deepest set joints I've seen in a while. The range can't have been good on that thing.

If thats a typical ball joint you could drill right into the center between the two halves, about half wa through you would probably break the little peg in the middle holding them together and coukd try sliding it out piece by piece

To my knowledge, there isn't much flexible shit you can graft onto soft vinyl. One of the reasons that people tend to soak sofubi in thinner to harden then before painting and nodding.
The best go to solution is just your average epoxy putty.

I didn't have to take anything apart, but those legs are good sturdy ball joints and they pop right out if you need to make space in the pot. This was my first time working with Rit dye, and my first attempt was a big fuck up. Used the powdered all-purpose stuff instead of the Rit DyeMore liquid. I gave that shit an hour soak off and on and all it did was turn crispy golden brown.

when painting lines I use this thing I made, its a thread tied taut at two points ( I just 3d printed a Y shape with loops on the end for tying string ) and I paint the string and press it against where I want it. Only works for flat plains though.

The raw headsculpt has a more cartoony appearance to it, but in a satisfying, toyish way. It's why she looks so good next to Snake. Part of that is the finish, definitely, but I bet a million dollars that if you paint it you'll still see it. I'd suggest painting that head a bit more toy/character friendly, rather than as human-real, see how it looks with the stuff you want to pose it with.

The nuclear option, but be prepared to replace the screws. Jam a flat head screwdriver (try getting one slightly bigger than the screw, it can't be too small or too big) with as much strength as possible, this should create a "dent' on the screw, then with all your retard strength, slowly turn the screw.

Only do this if you absolutely cannot turn them via other methods.

If it were me Id use a fatter Phillips screw driver head with a dab of super glue/gorilla glue on the end, let it dry and then try to unscrew it normally. If it works then all you need to do is head the screw with a lighter to break off the glue. If it doesnt work youll be drilling it out anyway

I'm not sure if this counts as a "custom" but I completely repainted this knockoff Chinese mezco 1/12 collective punisher (the original paint job was hideously sloppy, but the figure is great besides). I got rid of that hideous bulletproof vest and painted a skull on his undershirt. The skull logo looks rough and flaky which was intentional, I always preferred the haphazard spray painted punisher skull to the neatly printed look. I gave him a trench coat because the original version doesn't come with one even though punisher should always have. First figure I've ever tampered with and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

It's not that weird. Phone cameras save the rotation of the picture to the metadata. 4chan strips the metadata because they may contain your penis measurements. You need an app that does actual rotation not just changing the metadata.

You'll need to disassemble the figure into parts and wash each part with Dawn to get the lubricating silicon oil off before dying otherwise you can have spots or undyed sections. Get the dye to a very low rolling boil. Do NOT dye any hard abs plastic such as hard plastic chests/waists of Marvel legends. They will shrink and warp in the heat. Same goes for transformers. Oddly enough the easiest plastic to dye is the hardest to paint, the waxy unpaintable plastic they use on the inner joint discs and transformers hips/elbows/battle masters.
