I don't have him yet but what's the part about the hip articulation (anyone with one of the Astrobot figures could probably answer this)? Or hat peg? Far as I can tell it's as simple as there's a small peg in the hat and a small hole in his head.

Krivo-anon here. The hips are a cut joint that goes out at an angle, so the higher forward you raise the legs, the more splayed out they become. Works inversely in the opposite direction. For a figure with pretty free movement in all other areas, it just seems like an odd choice resulting from aesthetics.

Also the hat is made of a rubbery material, so the peg squishes and depresses rather than slotting in. There’s also a weird strip of material that prevents it from being pushed down past a certain limit. In other words, it has a very loose hold on the head and falls off frequently, probably the most disappointing part of the figure.

Will post pics to illustrate these elements later.

What I did for that with the original astrobots was just spin the waist around 180, and rotate the hips around to face forwards. They can kick straight out then, the only weird thing is the feet are backwards, but the way the toes are shaped you can barely tell. I'd like to actually swap the legs at the hips to completely fix it, but I'm pretty sure they're glued together.

I don't really have a issue with the hat, my only major complaint is him not coming with a handheld gun, figure itself is fine imo. The backpacks jetpack mode is also kinda lame.

An upcoming figure is supposed to come with his gun, which isn't ideal, but it's nice that it's still coming. I also wish the backpack was a bit better, doesn't seem like it turned out as cool as it could have.

RIHIO has 5 pilot sculpts but you need to assemble them yourself. They sell them in 15 pilot packs too making them the cheapest 1/60 figures you can get.

MFT launched their new series of original astronaut-themed Dianaut last year. Emonster has special pilots figures packed with their original mechs line also launched last year.

The Gundam Microwars candy-toyline have micro pilots too but theirs are a head taller, at 1/55 scale or so.

If you can get it at a decent price, it’s a pretty rad kit. The triple jointed legs are a nice touch but it also comes with all you need to make an original Portanova (the regular legs become the backpack).

The triple jointed leg setup is a rarity among the sets so if you want more in its style, you’ll have to wait for the repaint later this year.

New set of Snapships has leaked, and they introduced a bonafide mech, with dedicated limbs/joints. The also added a touch of colour (orange and drab green parts) which really improves the bland grey/blue colour scheme imho.

It's a pretty damn modular line (pic related, built from a few different Hexa Gear/Frame Arms sets and a lot of MSG weapons).

Bulkarm is absolutely covered in ports and comes with a lot of spare adapters and shit, and as far as I know all of Koto's lines are reasonably compatible with each other. You also have a whole world of MSG weapons and gear, and even Bandai system weapons you can add in. It's really up to your imagination how interesting you can make it.

I know I’ll probably get memed on by the Diaclone owners here, but I just find Hexa Gear too expensive as an investment. If I want foot soldiers and mech battles going on, the price for entry is just too steep. I’m more curious about Toys Alliance’s Warhammer-esque offerings in the future.

I got these on discount and Im really liking how you can easily make custom builds. They have an app with builds that take multiple kits including a huge battleship called the Leviathian I plan on building. It takes one of each of the good guys sets and 2 of the Sabres.

I get that, but those things combined with the cost make it hard for me to pull the trigger. Its a slight improvement in a few areas compared to the initial set of Reboot power suits, but it's more expensive than the Maneuver variants.

It’s cute, but ‘cute’ is not something I look for in a robot. I prefer this homebrew version, based on the old powered suit buck. Longer legs and less of a diaper-look, looks more imposing and dynamic.

(and yes, the 3d print is mediocre, but as an idea I like it better)

Yeah, that's the Diaclone reboot for you. It's good, but small and expensive. That being said, some of the new stuff is pushing it for me:

-Old Power suits around 3,000-3,300
-Grid suit, which is around the same size, is less complex in certain areas, and does not include the storage box is 5,500

The Gridman mini-fig looks awesome, but this is just too much.

There are some at chinese sellers on ebay, aliexpress or their own .com sites. They appear on JP shops (Amiami, Hobbysearch, etc) about 2 months after release. Apparently NA stores carry them too but after an unknown number of months. The markup outside taobao seems atrocious.

Showzstore carries them, but afaik for a pretty big mark-up. That said they do offer free shipping and usually slip through customs for me. And I've had pretty good experiences with their customer service. I did have both of the boxes I got come in a bit dented, but the contents were still completely fine. Oh and both came with the alternate colour runners.

I got one from Amazon for ~$100. Was pleasantly surprised at the quality, size, weight when I got it. Went on TaoBao and saw that they are around $60. Yeah they were posted a while back. I'm still hesitant to call them KOs because they might be RIHIO themselves selling simplified designs, we don't really know. It doesn't seem to be officially distributed in China either so that might be the case.

I think the issue is that most mecha kits can’t be piloted, and if they can, the pilot is 1/144, 1/100, or 1/72 so you don’t get lots of interaction.

Also, I’ve found piloted, larger-scale mecha to be bland as hell.

Not modular, but there were some Titan Fall figures by ThreeZero that were really good, if really expensive, as all things ThreeZero are.
The pilots are ~6" and Titans ~20 1/2", 100+ points of articulation between the two of them.
To my memory they had an Atlas, Scorch, and Northstar, but each were upwards of $400.

HexGear is a good one, hugely customizable, most their focus is on the Governors (The actual action figures) but they do have quite a few larger mechs, but they haven't made any big mechs, and probably don't any time soon, as cool as they would be.

I cant afford much diaclone figures , and I really wanted the Gridman crossover. There' a cheaper version without the combinable jet I was thinking about buying and using parts from other series as his armour, but does anyone know what peg sizes are compatible with Diaclone? And if there's any other series that partswap with them more easily.

Also are there any good bootlegs of Diaclone?

The armor parts all seem to use unique connectors to the Gridman body. You'd have to figure out how to use those few 4mm ports on his back with other parts. Diaclone also uses 3mm pegs on the smaller stuff like the powersuits.

MFT's KOs of the larger mechs stopped very early at CosmoBattles and even their Powersuit KOs are now dead.

Yeah Robot Build is pretty much the only line outside Diaclone to use 4mm. Others tend to use 3mm, while Transformers are 5mm.

This is kinda dope conceptually, but the fanmade one honestly looks better and like more fun to pose on. The legit one is just steep inclines on all sides, with no horizontal beams to stand on. You can pretty much have one figure standing at the summit and that's it without additional stand support. >>8942090

They've just announced an upgraded version of the line, Animagear Double Engine (DE) featuring more 3mm joints for more combination. First wave is also a redo of the initial Animagear characters.

It's launching in August so I may check it out then. Past reviews of Animagear kits often mention how the joints have to be tightened, hopefully this new line has more consistent tolerances.

It didn’t occur to me that it’s an accessory pack and not a “proper” figure, in that case I like it better. Still wish the leg articulation was more dog-like though.

Ehhhhh, I wouldn't say it's the standard. Many lines have base frames, or pilot pods/cockpits, and 30MM is more of a variety of frames, with accessories being the most modular element. Although a lot of the larger accessory sets modify the base frames, as well, you have to get very creative with 30MM stuff if you want to do something more than a modified base frame.

I have both of those.

Thee bulky crab guy is a delight. His shape is just so weird and I love the little buddy robot in his crotch. His digitigrade legs can extend to give him more height, and once you adjust them properly, he balances surprisingly well on his tiny feet. Articulation is pleasing but nothing special. Just a solid, cool looking toy.

The tall boy, I had a few issues with him. His hips and ankles are more limited than I would have liked, so he isn't capable of the super dynamic posing I was hoping for. It's mostly a consequence of his design. On the upside, he is very cool looking, and I love his chainswords. If you can get around the fact that he isn't the greatest poser, he still makes great shelf eye candy.

I didn't get into combining them much, but the system seems sorta limited with the two I have. Mostly just pop-n-swaps of relatively big pieces, this doesn't seem like a super intricate building system like say, Rihio or Glyos.
