Sociopaths can generally perceive and interpret others emotions just fine, they just don’t feel any empathetic resonance/reflection from it.
In contrast, people on the autistic spectrum often struggle to perceive or identify the emotions of others and even themselves, however they usually are still empathetic to the emotions of others provided they are actually made aware of them. (This can get a bit murky in more severe cases, due to the autistic person’s own inability to express or understand their own emotions, or even communicate in general.)
TLDR: Sociopath can tell another person is really sad, but that fact doesn’t make them feel anything at all.
Autist fails to pick up that another person is really sad, but if the person explains that they are, they’ll then feel bad on account of the other person feeling bad.
