What a coincidence, I was looking through the January 2008 catalog earlier today and there was a whole section for Knights vs. Skeletons.

Did you zoomers know that back in the day, Lego would have a section in their magazine with random parts and prices for ordering a certain number of them, like a Bricklink page? It was fucking stupid but charming too.

Also there were creepy Belville sets too. Ughhh

What are y'alls takes on putting lights in stuff?

I gave it a shot and although its neat, I don't think I'll do it more than once or twice

It costs extra money and made fun parts of the building process into tedious, fiddly ones. I might want to put some in a larger spaceship, but I'll probably pass on it for sprawling layouts. Too much hassle, expensive, not fun to build with.

Sould means it was designed by good desgner who focused on all aspect of Lego while making set:

As someone with an affinity with accurate historical buildings, there are a few things that bother me with this set:

- The chimney is too short. To prevent fires (wooden roof construction) chimneys were usually built taller than the tallest member of the roof, to make sure the hot smoke/sparks drifted clear (ESPECIALLY since this is a forge).

- The workshop is ridiculously tiny compared to the living quarters, and also completely outdoors. This looks more like a mansion with an outdoor barbeque. I order to make good craftsmanship, you need a workshop that is sheltered from the elements.

There's a few more but those are REALLY minor. It's a fantastic looking set. But because of the person that I am, I'm bothered by details like this. Thank you for reading my blog and please listen to my latest podcast where I explain the impracticalities of the of Castle Grayskull drawbridge.

I already stopped buying modern lego so nothing would change there. i do agree that it displays pretty roughly and doesn't have the cohesiveness of a big playset like say, the death star, but something about it lit up my monkey brain so much when it was revealed. i remember being outside eating lunch when the news broke and just going "holy shit."

the story is what makes me love it more than the set, really. i almost bought it back in late 2019 when i was with my ex girlfriend and she said she couldn't be with a man who spent over $100 on a lego set (you can figure how it ended) so i passed at the time for some mediocre pussy.

a while after we broke up i was at a family owned lego store and i was trying to find a set i was interested in. i turned to the girl i had just started dating at the time and was like "man, y'know, i don't think i'm ever going to be satisfied unless it's that cloud city". this one dude working there was like stocking shelves when he overheard me and was like "oh we're getting one in like next week" and long story short he let me put $50 down on it and then trade in like 2 boxes of lego that hadn't been touched in a good 10+ years in for it. sure, individually, the 2 boxes probably had more value than the set, but the set was just cool to me.

i'm a sucker for sets with smaller little things in them that come out. like escape pods or smaller vehicles. i think it may be the same reason that things like the death star, the crest, the 6211 star destroyer, etc light up my brain. the minifigures in the set are cool and i just love cloud city as a location, i tried building my own as a kid because of course the original was wayyyy too expensive. had the 2016 freezing chamber but it was Not Enough.

Sup /lg/, I'm writing a fantasy action story and have been thinking about using lego as part of the brainstorming process, do you think it would be a good idea to buy some used lego preselecting the pieces I might need and then create lego versions of my character ideas and roughly build some pivotal parts of the setting and just mess around with it testing out narrative scenarios to get a feel what works and doesn't, essentially helping me visualize potential events and see what ideas flow naturally out of the experiment?

Or am I just delusional and wasting time?

This is how you design a "game" set and still remain aesthetically pleasing and engaging enough to function as a regular a play/display set.

absolutely, the verticality and the effort put into blending in and integrating the stepping squares as natural parts of the environment is what makes it work so much better.

not to mention the use of actual minifigures. I get that most mario characters cant be made into minifigs but they are still unnecessarily oversized and the sets suffers massively by having to accommodate for such giant critters

In the movie indeed. Say what you want about the sequels, with booring politics and bad romance dialogue, but from a world building standpoint it was the peek of starwars. We got as many ship designs in 1 movie as we got with the entire original trilogy.

Gungan submarines, Naboo fighters, Vulture droids, Podracers, Clone dropships, Interceptors specifically designed for Jedi pilots.

The set however was not the best. The Koro-2 exodrive airspeeder was suppose to be like a slick 2 person sportscar, but the lego is a 1 seater. It had a function to recreate the crash scene by automatically detaching wings, that were held in place by a rubberband. This made the wings really loose though. And the cockpit of the window couldn't be closed. It was suppose to be only held up by the cogs of the hinge that weren't strong enough and if you tilted the speeder, the windshield always opened up.

I do think the model here looks kinda plain and doesn't really adhere to the strenghts of the genre.

While my example is not cyberpunk, I think it gives you a pretty good idea how this model might been made into more interesting one.

Anyone else had this happen? I've had some fullt built models in a drawer for a while cause I didn't have space for them and I took them out just now, they've been in there for about a year, and there's this weird sorta sheen on the pieces? I've had these silver bricks for years at least since the mid to late 2000s when I got them from Legoland Windsor when they where clearing out old and unsold stock.
I couldn't find any reference to them on Bricklink and I believe that they where made as a one off commission which was the cockpit of a Boeing 747 that was around the size of a small van and Legoland was simply selling off the surplus.
