I was the first anon to shill the news of Origins on this board, when Mattel revealed on twitter their convention exclusive set with He-Man and Prince Adam. I remember posting the news and people saying how ugly and low articulated they looked, and that they didn't think they'd buy them, because Classics already existed. And with each piece of news and new figures, people would say the figures were ugly and they didn't like them, etc., etc.

I sold my entire Classics collection at the news of the new line. I had most of the Evil Warriors and all the main cast of the Masters: He-Man, Prince Adam, Orko, Man-At-Arms, Teela, the Sorceress. I also had two Rotons, and Castle Grayskull. I gambled that Origins would remake all those things including a Castle Grayskull and that I'd get them cheaper and in a smaller more toy friendly scale, and I kept telling everyone else to do the same and sell their Classics and buy Origins.

That was one of the reasons I was relieved to get rid of them, because I was worried about maintaining them and avoid paint rubs for such expensive toys.

The prices are so high right now, it's a good time to sell and re-invest into Origins or maybe Masterverse, tho the initial figures even though they have pretty nice looking articulation are just a tad on the bland side, because they're based on the Netflix cartoon. Perhaps they'll entice me more when I see better photos of them or have some in hand, but until then I'm all in on Origins.

I think everyone should be buying into the Origins line, because if it's supported and continues it could be just as great as Classics were and just as extensive-- but affordable.

I just viewed as Classics having run it's course. It was the largest MOTU line ever. And although there was still room to make more figures and characters they had already kinda scraped the bottom of the barrel and done every major thing they could that needed to be done outside of doing an Eternia Playset and some of the more obscure vehicles. That's how it usually is. Whenever something new is revealed everyone says they hate it until they actually get one. Pixel Dan took awhile to come around on Origins and was upset that Classics ended.

I genuinely think origins will end up outliving masterverse and the netflix series alike. Part of ,e kind of wishes origins was THE new heman incarnation. Caricature the toy designs a bit and make a straight forward action cartoon. That's really all MOTU needed right now. Smart, I hadnt considered how good of a match up triklops makes for man-e-faces.

All of these are equally brilliant. One face off I intended to mention sooner is Beast Man and Roboto. I figure "past vs future " is about as high stakes as these battles get. Though now I'm left wondering who Orko can personally face off against.

I subscribed to Classics in 2010 and got those figures, but I couldn't justify doing it for subsequent years, and now secondary market collecting is just not feasible.

Origins is a godsend, and I'm hoping and praying that Origins does as many characters from thst line as possible. I want a Draego-Man, Optikk, Goat Man, Mara, Dylamug, Lizard Man, Batros and Strong-or, and my only hope of getting them is if Origins both continues for years and expands beyond vintage toyline characters. Come on, Origins

Ok, hear me out on this one, because its gonna sound "out there" and relies on ignoring lote and just using your imagination to set up your own dynamics with figures

I pit Orko against Evil-lyn
In my collection, I imagine Orko as being far more competent than he lets on
And with Evil-lyn having such a jokey name, I imagine her being not nearly as powerful or badness as she makes herself out to be.
So they both kind of meet in the middle on the powerscale, and since they're both magic users I go with it.
Orko treats it like a game, Evil-lyn is constantly frustrated because she wishes she was Sorceress tier, and Skeletor loves it because she's his Starscream and seeing her struggle with Orko amuses him.

Most people would probably hate that, but that's how I like to match up my figures

Origins 2022 Predictions:
(Just blind speculation as to what I consider likely)

-at least 3 new Hordesmen will come out next year
-tying into last one, we will get at least ONE Filmation character, and it will be Shadow Weaver. Once that floodgate is open, we may see a second one in 2022, but more likely other Filmation would come 2023 or later
-we will start the Snakemen with 2 King Hisses, similar to how we got 2 Hordak's this year. One will be standard release in vintage style action feature of a shell body over the snake, the second will be a deluxe with swappable upper body for people thst want a more imposing snake form
-besides Hiss, there will be 3 other deluxe (keeping a similar pattern to this year).
-one of those deluxes will be either Leech with a swappable head (one with a suction cup, the other Classics style) OR Spikor with a swappable hand for his trident hand
-other, standard releases will include Kobra Khan, Moss Man, Snout Spout, Clawful, Buzz-off, Randor, Sorceress, Jitsu and Grizzlor
-we will get an Adora to go with Adam. She may or may not be single carded, she may be like Adam and sold with a vehicle
-creatures will be Strider and Night Stalker
-vehicles will be Attack Track and Roton
-we will finally get army builders in the form of Horde Troopers and/or Skelcons (considering how people reacted to Ckassics Skelcons coming with Roton so it couldn't be army built + how easily Mattel could make it with recycled parts, I consider it very likely)

Chance is extremely slim since Mattel has to license them from Dreamworks and also Shadow Weaver has no parts that can be reused to other figures. Plus the "Vintage" one is still easy to get from Super 7.

I could see a Marlena, though honestly? I'd like to see them realize the planned "Warrior Queen" Marlena that was in production when the line was canceled in 87. Since they gave Randor a makeover, I think it'd be a lot cooler than just another Filmation version.

I want Filmation characters, but not filmation animation models in toy form. Id like a single aesthetician for all characters. Classics Icer did it right. He was the filmation character, but he looked like a normal classics figure. They need to apply that to all of them (assuming they even get Origins releases)

Icer, Vulcan and Batros were perfect.
Strong-or and Octavia could have used slightly more detail in his armor
Fang Man and Lizard Man were good but but could have toned down the cartooniness in the faces
Hawke and Kittrina were terrible and need complete overhauls.
Dylamug is a weird case for me because he IS too similar to animation model and doesn't really mesh with the rest of classics, but he's so fucking based regardlesd

All the red flags are here:
- Netflix
- Post Clerks 2 Kevin Smith
- the same studio that did Castlevania in a weird hybrid style between that and Mike Young
- that god awful description for the show that was given a year ago
- a "more serious" continuation to filmation which makes no fucking lick of sense because there was very little continuity on the show to begin with aside going into She-ra.

We're getting closer to one all things considered. Beast Wars is back on the menu, Power Rangers is coming back full force (new movie, new series, better toys), TMNT is doubling down on the original movie continuity going forward. It's all coming down the pipeline. Still though, I expected to start seeing more companies buying licenses for other 90s properties. So far we've only seen Toxic Crusaders get attention.
I expected to start seeing a resurgence for things like Swat Kats, Gargoyles, and Captain Planet by now.

What the fuck happened to Man-E-Faces? Caked on/bubbly paint on the left arm, right isn't much better, robot face already has scratches and missing paint. Worst part is this one was the better of the two on the shelves. I got him because I figured I'd never see him in stores again, but what a shitstorm.
That aside, Trap Jaw and Scareglow fucking rock. Especially Trap Jaw, super fun toy. Only possible gripe is his left arm is a slightly darker blue. Super clean paint though.

I don't see Mattel ending Origins unless it stops making money and at that point they probably won't bother with a big playset.
If they're going to do it it would be best to do it when sales are high but also when they've gained enough trust from big stores like walmart and target so they'll stock a big playset.

The $15 price is because they can keep the same parts reuse going as the original toyline. The moment they start having to do lots of original sculpting for figures with limited reuse potential the profit decreases. Keldor and Kronis only happened because they are extremely easy and quick ways to reuse most of the Skeletor and Trap Jack assets. If you can do Filmation or POP or 200X characters like that, they probably will. But actually going into the sort of detail and unique body shapes that 200X did for example is never gonna happen at this price point.

I think Mattel needs to look at their past mistakes and not make them again if they want Origins to not die.
Like how the vintage line died due to "main cast" characters being long off the peg or how 200X died because of too much He-Man and Skeletor spam.
They need to strike a balance of reissues and new stuff so late comers can get into the line and long time collectors have something new to buy that isn't impossible to get.

The issue is that the lore says the Unnamed One created the Snakemen, and people lost their shit that an "evil orko" was the mastermind of the whole faction.

Just look at Classics for an example, they had a small budget so they needed to keep the new tooling to a minimum.
Stuff like Draego-Man could just be King Hiss + standard monster feet/forearms and the only new things needed are wings and a head.

Dylamug had a 100% new sculpts in Classics, BUT for Origins, if you wanted to imagine a "vintage style" Dylamug, you will need a new torso, but you could reuse Mosquitor feet for the multi-toed look, and if you look at his unproduced concept sketch, he had clamp hands, so you could reuse arms from Multibot, Twistoid or hover bots if you made them.
So now a 100% new sculpts is only 50-75% new. Still an improvement

Pretty much you have to look at all the parts you have and think "what can I use to make X chatacter?" And the more times a new part can be reused the more intensive they have to make it and if you can keep cost/tool down on a few figures it means you can use that budget elsewhere for chatacters who don't have as much reuse like Ramman.

What do you guys consider the best and worst waves of the vintage toyline?

For me, the best wave was wave 4. Evil Horde, Spikor, Stinkor, Roboto. It was great.
The worst was probably wave 5. I will say I like Snout Spout and Tunglashor, but that wave had the highest percentage of characters i just couldn't care about.

It's hard for me to rank because there's only six waves worth of figures and every year has some bangers, but I'd probably have to say 87 is the worst just because of the fucking Meteorbs. There's so many of them and they all suck ass. The actual regular figures have some extremely great choices like Mosquitor, Snake Face, Scare Glow etc, but the meteorbs just drown out any good of that year.

Best year I'd say is 84 or 85. 84 because it was the last "pure" year about He-Man vs Skeletor and all the characters introduced are classics, and 85 because I honestly love the Horde.

Do you guys actually recall store aisles from that wave? Meteorbs were packaged and pegged almost as their own sub-line, and did not mingle with MOTU-proper. They were incredibly easy to bypass when actively looking at a wall of toys.

My friends and I had one Snout Spout and one Rio Blast between us, and everybody fought over playing with them. Snout Spout actively had an IRL attack that you could hit your friends with, and Rio Blast was like a toy version of Charles Bronson.

But Extendar...nobody wanted to waste their allowance on that guy. It was Mekaneck all day everyday. I don’t think anyone around me had Dragstor, but the allure was always there. At the time he was out, any figure with wheels on it had to directly compete with Transformers and GI Joe.

i enjoy both personally, i don't have room for all origins cause i'm still a classics guy(huge collection) but there are always people hating new lines. Looking back they are all good with weak/strong points, depending on people's tastes.
I was suspicious of origins at first because the convention prototypes, paint and lighting were awful but they look damn nice in person and normal condition shots.
I even have the lords of power set and Mr. T.
I pre-ordered keldor and kronis for the skelly head and new body.

Not necessarily, honestly in my canon I might just say he is some age old lich king who has been fucking with Eternia for generations and leave it at that.
Like he just fucks with Eternia every 100 years and tries to take Castle Grayskull but every time a hero steps up to fend him off (wait this is just Castlevania...).

Later this year we're getting Evil-Lyn 2. It's most likely gonna be 200x colors (because what else could an Evil-Lyn 2 even be?). Maybe that version will be pixie cut instead of helmet to justify its existence?
Honestly, I can't see a rerelease of Lyn in new colors with absolutely no changes other than color being that big a seller. They'd have to include something different about the figure.

It should be kept in mind when 200x was released. There were a lot of shit kid's shows at the time but it was after the 80s/90s cartoon era which was dominated by fairly hollow toy ads. In the early 2000s you had shit like Justice League and (very late 90s but still) Beast Wars. They probably figured the show needed some depth to appeal to that era's children's TV goers.

I love the Ninjor/Clamp Champ rivalry because it's so random.

My head canon is that Skeletor "just was" an age-old lich king from a dark dimension. The jungle He-Man gave his life to kill him, but his ghost lives on as Scare Glow.

If we're talking about origins of characters, you know what I've always liked? The concept of Prison Star. Like, just a whole bunch of the Evil Warriors just being aliens from a dozen different worlds who were all just being kept in prison in one spot, and so Skeletor just orchestrated a jail break and was like "you guys are all coming to this planet with me, and you're gonna help me conquer it."

Then you'd have guys who are happy to serve out of gratitude, guys who go along to try and snatch power for themselves, guys who are just violate asshole criminals and just want a chance to wreck shit, and probably a lot of guys who just want to go home and get the fuck off Eternia so just go along because the sooner Skeletor wins, they sooner they get back to their own planet.
Plus, it has the added bonus of explaining so many weird looking guys because Eternia can't have THAT many races, so hey, they're all just aliens.

It is just a cool extra. I always thought Skeletor secretly being He-Man's batshit insane uncle was cool as fuck as a kid. The demon from the skeleton dimension thing from the minicomics was fun too. I will say that Filmation Skeletor doesn't need an origin because the Filmation show is that special kind of retarded kids show where the story in general doesn't really matter. It is just a bunch of weird toys going on adventures and that kind of thing would just distract from that.

NA is such a weird beast. The cartoon isn't great, but shit, look at the characters.
Skeletor is based as always, great villains like Flogg, Crita, Slush Head and Optikk, the heroes are a bit bland, but Flipshot and Sagitar are pretty cool.

On an unrelated note, Im annoyed by NECA's Kong repaint. If they had gone whole hog with the yellow paint we could have had the perfect Gygor stand in. The size difference would have been perfect too. Origins He-man could have stood on his back perfectly.

Probably gone now but I saw 2 cases of the Steamboat wave and I saw tons of people finding them on the FB MOTU group I'm in. They're bad about restocking but if you just keep an eye out and make sure to get them as soon as you see them popping up, its not that bad.

That's pretty much my take. Unlike modulok and his good guy counterpart, the twistoids are just kind of dumb from the get go. I prefer the gimmicky guys from new adventures to the twistoids. That one centaur guy who walks on his fists was pretty wild for instance.

I've been feeling the nostalgia and I've been watching it - I don't think MOTU was that bad. It's silly as fuck sometimes but its still somewhat entertaining. The Rotoscopped parts still look pretty good.

I've been doing the same. Early episodes are pretty great, but I honestly find large chunks of season 2 nearly unwatchable. I'm not sure why exactly.

I'm not sure if Real Ghostbusters counts since it's based on a film and is treated as a continuation of it, meanwhile stuff like Transformers, G.I. Joe and MOTU were toys first.

It might have been based on a movie, but the primary purpose of the cartoon was still selling toys, so I would say it still counts.
If execs didn't see toy selling potential in the movie, I don't think the cartoon would have even existed. Its not like it was made for its own sake or that the toys were incidental.

I don't care about this line, I just want Scareglow and that's it. I have always wanted one (love his design), but I have been waiting for a new figure since the vintage one is $400+. I've never understood why he's so popular. Like, I'm not saying he sucks, he's an ok guy, but the toy looks so much like its a MotU knockoff more than an actual character that I've never gotten why he rates so highly.
