Always wanted him for years until I managed to finally acquire him at the tail end of last year for under what he originally retailed for + under what the secondary market wanted. Just wish I could have the same luck in trying to obtain Usopp and Shanks.

So does a grail have to be something you want to buy and you'll pay any price for but you simply can't find or can it just be "I'm just not willing to pay that much for the item".
Because I have a lot of the latter like SS Kamen Rider Eternal/Double which go for about $300 - $400 and various Laser Beasts like Skull Grotess that sells for $800 complete but none of the former that I can think of.

For me a grail is just something you've wanted for years (usually something you wanted as kid), and are questing to find it. It doesn't have to mean you'll pay any price, but it is always something you have an eye out for, like you check ebay regularly, or you walk into a secondhand store and you notice they have a bunch of figures from the same franchise so check through them.
For me I never saw this on shelves as a kid, but I have seen secondary market listings going up for outrageous prices sometimes as high as $500au. I managed to grab this guy for 150.

Finding a white one, with the tail and mask, and without marks all over it, all for a good price can be hard. They usually sell for around $75, but I managed to find one about 2 months ago at a local shop for $40.

Chances are I won't bother with the S.H.Figuarts (I don't really collect them), and even if I do pick it up, I've wanted this figure for ages. It's big, it's cool, and it will probably scale better than the SHF anyway.

That is a damn nice figure. Don't get me wrong I'm not blinded by nostalgia, the IF Labs figure is wildly inaccurate to the source material, the articulation is limited to the point where it really only looks good in the pose I put it in, but it's kind of a "this is great, but I LIKE this" situation. That being said the picture you posted does look really nice, so I may just grab the SHF as well. I'm not bothered by having multiple versions or iterations of a character on my shelf.

I don't understand what you're getting at. You do know how scale works, right? SHF are 1/12, that means 1 foot = 1 inch. Aside from a few hang ups like the awful kid figures and the oversized Saiyan Saga Vegeta the line keeps everything in proper scale.
The larger members of the recent Ginyu Force releases for example are pretty damn big. At $80 + shipping the SHF Cooler is going to be massive. That's more expensive than Recoome.

Horboi is like that too. I think it's because those two were released during the height of the covid panic. People were unsure what was gonna happen and some took a hit to their financial stability. So they likely held onto their money, thus causing a short print of both Riders. Same thing happened with Kamen Rider Gai from Kamen Rider Ryuki, but that was entirely because people gave so little shit about him they didn't bother pre-ordering.

I've lurked in the Dragon Ball general for awhile and a habit you'll notice is people are obsessed with upgrading and owning the best person of a chatacter and shitting hard on anything else, be it the cheapo Dragon Stars line, the third party demoniacal fit line or even older figuarts.
This isn't a thing exclusive to Dragon Ball collectors by any means and not all of them do it but it's a common thing to see.

OP here, I picked up the Dragon Stars figure myself and it is definitely better than the IF Labs figure in terms of articulation and show accuracy, but there is just something about IF Labs one that makes it such a nice display piece, I have the SHF Cooler pre-ordered, but I've had to go through a different company because P-Bandai doesn't ship to my country, so I hope everything goes well.

The Irwin Labs/McFarlane era stuff from the turn of the century don't get much love, especially not by weebs, but I still really appreciate their sculpts and attempt at more mature levels of paint and sculpting. Yes they're "off model" but the presentation for these really felt nice and closer to a collectible than just a toy. I wouldn't necessarily go back to them after SHF but I don't think they deserve so much hate. As a whole , if you're not focussing on little details, they still hold up nice enough.

I managed to pick up this Jakks Pacific Gogeta from a local toy store recently, they must have found an old box or something because they were New Old Stock and they were only asking about 10 bucks for it. Downside is that it must have been stored somewhere warm for the past decade or so because it's SUPER sticky. But that's fine, It looks good sitting on a shelf. That being said, I do hate the stupid halo, anyone know if it will just unplug if I yank on it?

Older cat here, I used to have all these ... the lord slug was particularly neat. They were high end back in the day. The sculpts were kinda off even then but there was still nothing that existed with this level of detail .... I mean for fucks sake the only other figures were the sbc and the jakks pacific

But when I was younger, I used to have that same movie collection Cooler and it was the absolute shit. Still great for its time. I wouldn't pick it up today, but I can see the nostalgia value in it, and it's definitely not like egregiously bad or anything.

I agree about Ace, but Nami wasn't bad, other than having a tough time standing. Luffy looked quite off, but it was a fun figure. If they do revive the line, expect to never see the big characters, including Brook and Franky, unless the line somehow did exceptionally well.

I feel like shf wouldn't want to try one piece again after the first flop. It was the strength of the dragon ball brand that kept them going and managed to weather it through; the early dbz figs weren't great either. One piece in the west at least doesn't have that level of popularity

Yes but it has terrible range of motion because of the pants. The Bikini one has better range but the one I got specifically had joints so loose the legs would fall right off. had to put little pieces of paper in the sockets to get them to stay.

Figuarts One Piece might not be a massive moneymaker like the Dragon Ball and Toku lines, but if they do a halfway decent job it should still be fine.

Posing is pretty ok, nothing crazy. Couldn’t get the knees past 90 degrees otherwise the straps on the knee pads would get in the way, didn’t want to break them as soon as I got this guy. Arms have the best articulation, armor kind of gets in the way but he has double jointed elbows so he can hold his shield/sword up no problem. I’ll have to mess with him more.

Crocodile I'd say is fine enough. What really killed the line I feel were characters like Perona, the Past Blue Luffy/Zoro (Despite being leagues better than their timeskip versions) as well as Bikini Nami (A failed grasp for the coomer audience). Maybe Lucci too.

Free up those slots and you have easy use for at least making Brook and Franky to finish the crew. The line could have also used another antagonist, so maybe make an Akainu to pair up against Whitebeard. Hell, why not make a Gold Roger while we're at it seeing as he's the big reason why the story exists in the first place.

What likely happened is they kept putting it off cause they didn't really know how to do them and instead did other characters in the meantime. I don't think any of the characters we got like the past blues took the "slot" of Brook. Now it seems like the time has passed and we'll never get them. They should've just gave the last 2 straw hats a shot even if they ended up kinda janky.

As for Brook, I can't see why they couldn't make him. I doubt he would be any lankier than their Sanji and height wouldn't be an issue since they made the likes of Crocodile.
