I've done model cars and gundam. Its easier than lego, because you don't have to search for the parts, because they're all layed out on an easy to read sprue.
Oh no, glue and clippers. Not really needed since most modern gundam sets, even the master grade now a days, all snap and slot together with fairly sturdy friction connections, very similar to lego.
Also, every lego set says 6+, so its actually for 6 year olds, and I've seen kids younger than that building gundam and model cars.
And there's nothing stopping you from painting or using water slide decals on lego if you really want to. Its a creative toy, and you're allowed to be as creative as you like with it. Unless of course you find it impossible to build anything without instructions.
